Game 35 Open Thread - Orioles (17-18) at Royals (15-19)

Baltimore @ Kansas City

If we can know only one thing about tonight's glorious Royals-Orioles matchup, it is this: Steve Traschel is happy to be here.

Steve Traschel has made over $39 million dollars playing baseball.

Of course, as Royals fans, we prefer Gil Meche's lockjaw smirk of gloom, doom and menacing masculinity and contempt:

Of course, that was last year's picture. Now, we've got this strange animal:

The Royals are 1-13 against the Orioles since 2006.

Yeah so the Royals are looking for a director of marketing.

My friend says I should apply for the job and gave me these slogans to add in my cover letter.

1) Free Electrolux night. “Hey, we suck, and now, you can too!”
2) Ease the Pain night: ”$1 beers!”
3) Not sure if you should pull the plug? Come watch us for two hours…KC Royals 2009
4) Once, Twice, Three strikes a Royal!
5) The Royals – they play just like you would!
6) Royals baseball 2009 – we can’t suck every year
7) The Royals: Nobody in Bucharest knows we suck
8) Royals 2009: We put the “Oy” in Royals
9) Come see the Royals: “What else is there to do around here?”
10) The Royals 2009: Ahhh f*%k it.

Hey, that's funny.

The Royals suck. I get it. Isn’t it fun!

I probably disagree with you.

L.i.g.h.t.e.n. U.p.

Not every negative thing posted about the Royals is directly proportionate/correllary to your pride and/or dignity.

Sometimes it’s just funny. After all it’s humor that sustained us during the toughest of times, Jerry.

We're all entitled to find things funny...or not

I’m sure many will find your bash-isms very funny. I don’t. It has nothing to do with my pride or dignity. It has to do with my favorite team. I’m all for straightforward analysis of what is good and bad on this team. I don’t so much love the wallowing in and or joking about “we suck, we’ve always sucked and we always will suck. Boy, we are pathetic.” Why some/many fans find that fun, I’ll never know.

I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on May 9, 2008 7:30 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Agree wholeheartedly with NYRoyal

I don’t find these slogans funny at all. Not one bit. Why can’t people accept that this is an entirely different franchise than the one that existed before Moore took helm? New philosophy. New direction. But I’m sure ignorance is bliss, isn’t it?

Was at the game last night.

Rediculously boring. I shouldn’t complain, though, because there have been many Royals faithful who have experienced the same hardships this year that I did last night. Hoping for an offensive outbreak tonight to ease my pain.

Try drinking more,

I wonder if the percentage of alcoholism, in relation to fans of losing teams, is greater than that of successful clubs.

haha that is the funny thing

My friends and I were pretty wasted. Made the game go by quicker and that Gates sandwich tasted even better.

And ladies and gentlemen, that is why this team sucks

2nd and 3rd, 1 out against one of the worst pitchers and baseball and we can not get at least one run.

the fact that the trash man has only allowed 2 runs is incredible

time for him to lock in and cruise for another 4 innings

by royalsreview on May 9, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Oh well,

Looks like Gil just has to throw a 170 pitch no-no.

Let's Go Blues!

by powderbluesfor08 on May 9, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Even better: Gil Meche, 1 walk 0 hits, 40 pitches 2 IP

Trashman: 4 hits, 0 walks, 30 pitches in 2 IP

Mystifying.

by slayor on May 9, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Hey

If Meche only goes five with no runs due to pitch count, and Trachsel’s able to go 7 giving up a run an inning, I’d still take those odds.

Bynum's not a "call-up"

He was supposed to be the starter all along, got hurt in ST.

by jonfmorse on May 9, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

well

He wasn’t supposed to be the starter all along. Luis Hernandez was the favorite (because he hit an empty .290 filling in for Tejada last year) going into the spring. Bynum was just supposed to be a super sub. Now that Hernandez has so gloriously proven he’s not a major league starter (or player, frankly), Bynum is the shortstop.

They give a lot of impressions. Particularly Buck.

Credit where due, though

Thorne had a really good pre-game segment with Kevin Millar on fielding first base.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on May 9, 2008 9:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Thorne can still be awesome

He has moments where he’s not. But once he’s had a couple drinks he gets funny.

I’ve actually got the Royals feed tonight, which I’m enjoying, and I generally can’t get into opposing broadcasts. Particularly Seattle’s. Ugh. I’ll take a compilation of Hawk & DJ’s Greatest Hits over five innings of those guys any day.

I just still hear a hockey game

whenever I’m stuck with the Oriole feed.
