Game 35 Open Thread - Orioles (17-18) at Royals (15-19)

Baltimore Orioles @ Kansas City Royals

If we can know only one thing about tonight's glorious Royals-Orioles matchup, it is this: Steve Traschel is happy to be here.

Steve Traschel has made over $39 million dollars playing baseball.

Of course, as Royals fans, we prefer Gil Meche's lockjaw smirk of gloom, doom and menacing masculinity and contempt:

Of course, that was last year's picture. Now, we've got this strange animal:

The Royals are 1-13 against the Orioles since 2006.

Yeah so the Royals are looking for a director of marketing.

My friend says I should apply for the job and gave me these slogans to add in my cover letter.

1) Free Electrolux night. “Hey, we suck, and now, you can too!”
2) Ease the Pain night: ”$1 beers!”
3) Not sure if you should pull the plug? Come watch us for two hours…KC Royals 2009
4) Once, Twice, Three strikes a Royal!
5) The Royals – they play just like you would!
6) Royals baseball 2009 – we can’t suck every year
7) The Royals: Nobody in Bucharest knows we suck
8) Royals 2009: We put the “Oy” in Royals
9) Come see the Royals: “What else is there to do around here?”
10) The Royals 2009: Ahhh f*%k it.

Hey, that's funny.

The Royals suck. I get it. Isn’t it fun!

I probably disagree with you.

L.i.g.h.t.e.n. U.p.

Not every negative thing posted about the Royals is directly proportionate/correllary to your pride and/or dignity.

Sometimes it’s just funny. After all it’s humor that sustained us during the toughest of times, Jerry.

by MKforKC on May 9, 2008 7:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We're all entitled to find things funny...or not

I’m sure many will find your bash-isms very funny. I don’t. It has nothing to do with my pride or dignity. It has to do with my favorite team. I’m all for straightforward analysis of what is good and bad on this team. I don’t so much love the wallowing in and or joking about “we suck, we’ve always sucked and we always will suck. Boy, we are pathetic.” Why some/many fans find that fun, I’ll never know.

I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on May 9, 2008 7:30 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agree wholeheartedly with NYRoyal

I don’t find these slogans funny at all. Not one bit. Why can’t people accept that this is an entirely different franchise than the one that existed before Moore took helm? New philosophy. New direction. But I’m sure ignorance is bliss, isn’t it?

Was at the game last night.

Rediculously boring. I shouldn’t complain, though, because there have been many Royals faithful who have experienced the same hardships this year that I did last night. Hoping for an offensive outbreak tonight to ease my pain.

He wasn’t supposed to be the starter all along. Luis Hernandez was the favorite (because he hit an empty .290 filling in for Tejada last year) going into the spring. Bynum was just supposed to be a super sub. Now that Hernandez has so gloriously proven he’s not a major league starter (or player, frankly), Bynum is the shortstop.

Our record is amazing

....Given the negativity (justified, IMO) of our fanbase this far into the season.

15-19. Not bad considering most of us are disappointed.

I think that, assessing this team realistically, there isn’t that much room for improvement in our current roster. Most of our 25-man roster is in their prime or older. And most of our sub-25 players (Gordon, Soria, Greinke, Bannister, Nunez, Ramirez?) have been our most significant contributors.

Bottom line? Our max. potential, with this roster, just isn’t as high as the fanbase would like it to be. The solution? Either several successful and instant draft picks, a high-profile free agent signing, another shrewd free-agent signing, and a Cortes/Hochevar breakout. On top of committing $$$$ to our own core. That’s a sizeable task for GMDM.

by Royals Nation on May 9, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea... its becoming a problem

lots of just OK guys who are who they are

I dont know how it can be upgraded

and its more reason why signing a mere “meh” guy like Guillen was a mistake

by royalsreview on May 9, 2008 8:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm beginning to think the signing...

...was a mistake. We still have the worst offense in the AL, and the 3rd fewest runs scored in baseball.

In fact, I was one of its most fervent supporters (the contract). Not happy to admit that I was wrong. Contracts like these are fairly damning for Moore. I doubt we will have an above average offense anytime soon.

Crapping pants

Kind of symbolic for this offense, esp. w/ regard to late-inning comebacks/maintaining the lead. Or at least so it seems. That’s probably the fan in me talking. We’re probably just as bad in any situation, but it certainly seems we let mediocre pitchers settle into a groove by the 2nd/3rd inning.

One helluva game being played btween teh rays and Angels

scoreless through 8 1/2. James Shields would have 9 perfect innings if not for a ground ball single up the middle. Garland on the mound for the Angels. Probably going to get to see Shields pitch 10 innings, he’s only thrown about 90 pitches.

That was different, though

Boone had been around for a long time, then roided up. Giles was good all along, had a breakout season that wasn’t really out of line with his career path, then just fell off a cliff overnight.

Something has to give

The sickening part about this game is, if Meche doesn’t throw that ball away he gets a double play on the groundball and we’re still tied.

To be fair to him though, what is there he can do?

He can’t change the roster or sign AROD. He has what he has and has to deal with it.

It's time to start shopping for hitting

Blocked prospects (Ian Stewart, Joe Koshansky) or guys who are on the block with power (like the Duncan brothers).

Here's the thing

Remember where Moore is from. It’s obvious his plan is to fill the system with pitchers that people are beating our doors down for in order to be able to pick and choose the hitters he wants to develop.

I’m not sure we have the depth he’s looking for quite yet, although we’re getting there quick.

AND

under no circumstances will he, or should he, try and get a hitter for NOW if that jeopardizes getting the right guys for next year or 2010.

Good point

But, there is a slim free agent class coming up and lots of big money teams are about to be slaughtering each other over guys like Dunn and Tex. I think we should go the trade route because we aren’t winning many bidding wars.

In Kenai and Soldotna; I will go there once every few years, and , like Taco Bell, I always regret it. Carl’s Jr. is not bad for what it is, and we just got one in Kenai when the Alaska Burger Kings went bankrupt.
