Game 57 Open Thread - Indians (25-30) at Royals (22-34)
Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals, Jun 1, 2008 2:10 PM EDT
Internet favorite Brian Bannister (4.97 ERA) looks to live up to a fraction of his immense hype this afternoon against fellow Holy Man Paul Byrd (4.10 ERA). The winner of today's contest earns eternal fame and pulls closer to a .490 winning percentage.
It's just so unfortunate that Byrd is such a distraction, you know? Just like Barry Bonds, such an awful awful distraction. The distraction is unbearable in fact. But he deserves it. He's a fellow national innocence destroyer, and I hope all fans boo him today at the K. I'll be in the outfield, holding up an * poster.

Oh, shit!
It’s June! My summer vacation is ruined!
I think we’re about due for a good outing from Bannister, aren’t we? Sweep! Sweep! Sweep! (don’t ruin my fun, I know we already lost one)
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
It would be nice to win a series
Bannister is due for a good start all of the Royals who have faced Byrd at least 9 times in their career have hit him well (there’s about a half dozen of them). I’m not putting any money on the game, but we have a decent chance to win this game and take the series.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Speaking of not any money,

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on Jun 1, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Not in the least
Greinke will probably do it. Bannister has a decent shot. The offense will improve which will help a lot. I don’t even remember what the stakes of this stupid bet were. Might as well bet which pitcher is going to give up the most Catcher’s Interferences.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Must...post...100...times...
But seriously anyone else see this? It’s a rather odd theory on Pronk’s decline.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
Very odd
Anybody know where he was hit? If it wasn’t on the wrist or in the head, I wouldn’t consider the theory for a second. Even if it were either of those things, I still think there’s no better than a 1 in 100 chance that the theory is correct. I have a strong feeling that this is one of those situations where correlation does not mean causation.
But Hafner is definitely one of the leading cautionary tales on extending good, young players to big, expensive contracts. I didn’t see this one coming. (of course, he could turn it around and he very well might, but this has been an astonishing fall from grace)
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

That's what worries me about Dunn
I love Dunn. I want him to wear Royal blue next year, but the old player skills and the decline curve that usually goes with it scares me. I think he’ll be very good to great the next two years. And then maybe/probably good in the third year. But the Royals would have to sign him to at least a 5-year contract. The fourth and fifth years could be bad. And there’s significant risk throughout the contract. Guys like Dunn have significant downside potential.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

If you already haven't
check out this KC Star article on Hillman while waiting for the start of the game. I posted it as a fanshot already but it’s pretty good. I enjoy trying to get into the minds of baseball people. I picture Hillman sitting in his office tillt he wee hours of the night, wondering what he got himself into.
by I need more Esteban on Jun 1, 2008 1:45 PM EDT reply actions
Unless Hillman is a pie-in-the-sky moron, I have to think he was prepared for this
He knew he wasn’t taking the job of managing a contending team. He knew the team was young and rebuilding. Bad streaks are going to happen. Guys who have been in baseball as long as Hillman know that there are big peaks and big valleys in every season, so you have to stay level and maintain your perspective.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Fans, in general, are not known for their patience, level headedness and perspective
One of my favorite quotes of all times comes from Bill Russell in his short-lived broadcasting career. He was doing the color commentary for some basketball game when a foul was called on the home team and the crowd erupted in boos, even though it was an obviously good call. The PBP guy said something like , “the ref said he travelled, but the fans don’t think so.” Russell replied, “fans don’t think; they react.”
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I don't think anyone held the TBL
link against you, if that’s what you mean. I just really can’t stand TBL…it’s far too mainstream for my tastes, and rarely do the authors have anything informative or incisive to say. And the Shelton thing…Shelton could still be a good platoon player, we just don’t need ANOTHER limited offensive player in our 1B/DH slot. And, oh yeah, Guillen’s rant bothered me too.
So yes, Stairs will unite us all. Here’s to major league players who take and rake their whole careers despite looking like a restaurant league softball player.

The Big Lead = entertainment
I shamefully admit that it’s part of my morning rotation, along with deadspin, firejoemorgan, ranyontheroyals, joepo, Prospectus, hardballtimes, and others (I wonder why I’m not as productive as I’d like?). I realize it’s on the same level as the Enquirer, though.
Also, just to extend the issue even further past the “who gives as shit” point (my fault to begin with), I was more thinking that he would have been to add in the offseason instead of Gload, rather than cutting Gload and acquiring him.’
Yup, just what people want to read on the game thread.
I think we should petition Retro in protest of his shamefully low “all-time” ranking for Stairs.

He should be No. 2, no question
and I generally approve of your morning rotation outside of TBL. I’m wishy-washy on Deadspin, since I like Leitch’s writing but I’m not big on some of the stuff that goes on there. Rany is good, joepo is good, prospectus is my bible, hardballtimes does some very good articles.
Yes, I was privy to the Shelton argument. No, I don’t think we should’ve acquired him. Too light of a bat to start, and the Royals don’t need to be carrying platoon first basemen with low upsides.

Hillman ALWAYS does this to Banny.
His last three starts he has left him in an inning too long and it led to runs, and in the two previous cases, to losses. He needs to learn that Banny cannot get guys out much above 100 pitches. Annoys the heck out of me.
