Yankee Fans Boo the Sun
It wasn't just the Royals that got Yankees fans hot and bothered.
It's not every day that a cloud gets the biggest cheers at Yankee Stadium.Fans showed their approval today when a cloud moved in front of the sun during the fifth inning of the Yankees-Royals game. They booed moments later when the sun returned.

Yeah, that happened Sat, Sun and Monday
There would be cheers when a cloud gave us a moment’s semi-relief, and then boos when the sun came back out. It was really brutal out there. We don’t get a lot of days of 95+ degree heat in NYC. New Yorkers aren’t as prepared for it as Kansans and Missourians.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The boos certainly got to the sun
The sun kinda choked late in the game yesterday.

Classic kneejerk negative overreaction to the weather by Yankee fans.
If they would have even attempted fair and objective analysis they would have realized that a couple of days worth of weather performance is too small of a sample size to make any judgments on. Prior weather history shows that that kind of heat is an outlier and would soon regress back to the mean. Fans should appreciate the plus plus warming ability of the sun.

Yankee fans are actually more prone to emotional kneejerk positive overreactions
But the above was well crafted. :)
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

But you have tp put the overreaction into context -- need to adjust for geography and season
Most NYers do not have air conditioning. Moreover, if they live in the upper floor of an apartment building, it gets pretty nasty in the summer. In other words, you’d be grumpy, too. According to RtW+ (Reaction to Weather), their reaction doesn’t seem all that bad, and is comparable to the quiet, but still audible sighs of KC fans when a light drizzle starts during a night game.

Exactly
You have to normalize for region and living condition, otherwise you’re comparing apples to oranges.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

It is increasing everyone's FGRIT

I'm still working on it, but I don't know any meteorologists
I think that the RR “brain” (ahem) trust can get on it.
This might end up being one of RR members proprietary stats, and soon, like Keith Woolner and Keith Law, RR readers and posters will be ascending to front offices (I’m thinking San Fran and LA seem likely locations, given their well-known forward thinking with regard to new metrics).
RtW+ is promising, but first GRIT needs to be sorted out and normalized historically and for each team (would Derek Jeter have GRIT if he played in Anaheim? Maybe, but not as much. They value defense too highly, and SS offense not so highly [Cf. Cabrera, Eckstein]). One problem is that, looking back at the post, it seems their were earlier stats named GRIT. So it needs a new acronym. I’m thinking something along the lines of Earned Respect as Statistically Tangible And Defensible: ERSTAD.

This potentially opens up an entire area of study
Fan grit, which could be measured by FGRIT, normalized for region and market size by EqFGRIT.
+ 10 for ERSTAD.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

OK, this needs to be another thread, but while we're on it
How do we propose to measure fan grit realtive to market size? Smaller markets have more grit, and thus get the fans get less credit for showing grit? Or something else?
Also, I would assume older franchises have more grit. Longer times since last division title, WS appearance, WS wins = more grit. Uncomfortable seating = more grit.
Boston becomes an interesting case—how much did the Fenway renovations, not to mention the 2004 and 2007 championships decrease the FGRIT/eqFGRIT? How do measure for bandwagon fans, too? So Boston is all over the chart. HUGE penalty for the fans not mobbing and neating Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore to a pulp at the end of the 2004 WS.
(Yankee fans will have to be left for last, as they are anomalous in many ways: difficulty in distinguishing between real and bandwagon fans, etc. They aren’t a sample you want to base initial hypotheses on.)
Just some ideas. We await Ned Colletti’s call.

"neating to a pulp" = "beating"
typos and grammatical mistakes = higher BCGRIT (blog commenter GRIT)

FGRIT
How do we propose to measure fan grit realtive to market size? Smaller markets have more grit, and thus get the fans get less credit for showing grit? Or something else?
Smaller markets do have more grit. I would say that in calculating FGRIT, you take the team’s rank in market size and multiple it by 100. (Yankees get a 100; Royals get something like a 2900).
Also, I would assume older franchises have more grit. Longer times since last division title, WS appearance, WS wins = more grit. Uncomfortable seating = more grit.
Older franchise = more grit
But I think winning records and WS wins = less grit. It takes a lot of fan grit to buy tickets and go to games of a losing team and one that hasn’t won in a long time. So the Red Sox fans FGRIT would take a major hit for the winning records and two recent WS titles. I’d say a team’s fans get at least 100 pts for each year since their team was last in the WS. +500 bonus if their team has never won the WS. And you get -100 for every year in the last 10 that your team was over .500.
Stadium conditions also count to some extent. Heat and other bad weather get bonuses (nice bonus for Ranger fans). You lose points for having a dome or retractable roof (it’s easy to go to a game when you know there will be no rainouts and it will be 74 degrees). You can get bonus points if the stadium is crappy. And extra bonus points if it is over 50 years old.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Right
Sorry, I was quite unclear—“longer times since” was mean to include since last titles, WS appearancse, and so on.
So we’re on the same page.
We also need to account for drunkenness, fights, etc. one way or the other.

You’re the Perseus vs. Medusa of “That’s What She Said.”
Ever see the “That’s What She Said” King of the Hill episode? That, combined with The Office, got me into one of those saying “That’s What She Said” ironic moods, and then it crept over into my everyday life…

you’d be amazed at what I can do as long as it has nothing to do with doing the work I’m supposed to be doing.

I'm not that amazed
after all, we’re both posting here in a thread which moved from a discussion of Yankees fans from how to historically normalize Fan Grit and reactions to weather.

Another problem area
Attitude towards opposing players: is it grittier to be (a) “classy” (St. Louis’ rep), or (n) Philly-esque.
Or© is it possible that both are gritty, but the modification depends on how intense the expression is?
Let’s look at the options:
(a) Standing O for a significant milestone reached by opposing team’s player: +100.
Booing player who helped your team win a championship returning on another team -100
(b) Not booing opposing player accused of spousal abuse: -100
Throwing batteries at opposing player: +100
Player is John Rocker: +200
(c) Standing O for opposing player breaking sig. milestomne: +75
Booing player accused of using PEDs: +75
A-Rod “stripper masks”: +50
Talking on cellphone to see if your spouse can see you on TV behind home plate: 500
Drunkenly running on field to beat up first base coach: tough, it’s +/ 250.
Booing Santa Claus: +500
Allowing Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore to make out for the cameras after your team wins its first World Series in generations: -10,000

Most importantly, talking on the cellphone is -500

This is a difficult one
But my gut says that the gritty fan doesn’t boo, or at least does so with proper restraint. (and when talking about grit, one’s gut always wins) Gritty fans, like gritty players do things “the right way.” Now, gritty fans are also strong competitors. So just as a gritty player might occasionally get into a fight because he wants to win that bad, gritty fans will occasionally boo a really bad guy (not a genuinely good opposing player—no gritty fan boos Jeter), or even toss a battery. And yes, gritty fans always show respect for opposing stars and gritty players.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

A wise man named Monty Burns once said:
“Since the beginning of time, man has yearned to destroy the sun.”
At least they didn't
Boo Santa Claus. Yay, Philadelphia.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
If Santa Claus were wearing a Red Sox hat...
...they would not only boo him, they would also throw beer, brats and batteries at him.
[Note: you could replace “Santa Claus” with “Jesus Christ” and my statement would still be true.]
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Mother Teresa

Man, Yankee fans f’ing hate Mother Teresa. Don’t even bring her up in Yankee Stadium. They would have beaten the S out of her.
