Game 65 Open Thread - Rangers (32-33) at Royals (25-39)

Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals, Jun 10, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

After starting the season 8-17, the Rangers have gone 24-16 and have hovered around .500 for the better part of two weeks. With a win tonight they could get back to that mark, and with an Angels loss they could claw to within six games back in the AL West.

To do so, they'll count on Kevin Millwood (4.65 ERA)  to best Gi Meche (5.54 ERA) in a battle of... of... well, rich guys.

Of minor note, the Rangers are 15-17 on the road while the Royals are 12-16 at home.

(Since when did Paul Bako become a somewhat good hitter? He's slugging .432!)

Bako's SLG is just a random spike

from his 2 HR yesterday. He got a little too excited about seeing Griffey hit 600 I think.

His slugging went up 43 points in one game!

Thank god

the Rangers spent so much money on Millwood. It’s not as if we’d ever blow that much money on one starting pitcher. :P

i don’t know; honestly that’s not that bad of a lineup. i still just don’t understand how we lose 12 in a row. you’ve got some speed, some pretty good averages, and a couple of guys who can hit home runs. we should be better than we are. i also should keep emailing our hitting coach.

I must admit

that, although I think Bradley’s too much of a risk for a team like the Royals due to injuries and the almost-inevitable disgruntlement (qualities that Guillen also has, just in much lower quantities than Milton), that when they’re both healthy and on the field I think Bradley is clearly the superior player.

Guillen’s attitude is what I love about him most. He has a fire and you can tell that he really just wants to be in the lineup and win.

by I need more Esteban on Jun 10, 2008 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you really know what has happened?

I heard after we signed him that in Seattle they loved him and didn’t understand where his bad rep came from. I heard that in the past, he got into quarrels with coaching about playing time when he wasn’t getting played enough. I’m not saying that that is all fine and dandy, but I love a guy that wants to be in the lineup every single day and can’t stand not to play.

by I need more Esteban on Jun 10, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He also wasn't a huge problem in DC.

He was in Pittsburgh, when he was a kid; he was in TB, when they were desperately hopeless; he was in Anaheim, when it’s arguable that Sciosca may have been being an absolute dickhead.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Jun 10, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok

definitely not good, but what were the details of it? What was it over? No matter what, the answer is probably not good, but I think that in recent years he has proved himself to be a little more mature and controlling of himself.

by I need more Esteban on Jun 10, 2008 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Jose has his moments

but you’re right, I can’t see him being that bad, as I think I acknowledged above, or meant to. But while everyone would like it if ballplayers busted their ass all the time, we’d rather have them taking it easy and hitting like above-average hitters than busting their ass just to break replacement level (Eckstein). It’s not fair, but that’s the way it is. As you know. /dumb lecture

For pure entertainment value, I think the Royals outfield this year should be CF: Milton, RF: Jose, and LF: Matt Stairs (Kegmeister as mediator)

Forget bullpen management

If Teahen catches the ball, this game is over. If Tomko gets anybody out, this game is over. If Yabuta gets anybody out, this game is over. If Buck doesn’t let that ball get away from him, we’re not losing. The blame is on the players, even if the bullpen management was horrible.

This loss is comparable

to turning on “That 70s Show” and seeing that Donna dyed her hair blonde.

Not a huge fan to begin with, but that was the last new episode I ever watched.
