I can't disagree with anything Rany wrote
Except that I wouldn’t extrapolate this one poorly managed game as anything more than one game. He screwed it up. Badly. But I haven’t noticed a general trend of screwing up like this. Every manager will have his bad days.

What?
Max, he’s been bungling percentage calls all season. I went south on him during the Kotchman Incident, and he’s done it repeatedly since then. He’s not learning.
Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

What may be more disturbing to me is something that HAS become a
trend, and that is Gil’s pitch count. I did not see the game last night, but I assume, looking at the numbers (only 4 hits, lot of GOs) that he was dealing. Your so-called ace needs not only to give you solid outings, but needs to get deep into games and save the bullpen. He should trust his stuff and his defense and just throw strikes and try to get out of innings quickly. It seems like whenever I watch him, he consistently gets ahead 0-2, then proceeds to get it to a full count. I guess that’s why he leads the league in P/IP (min 80 IP).

I don't think anybody refers to Meche as an ace
He’s not the best SP, nor does he have ace stats. His stats last year were that of a MLB #2. I think most fans would call him a #3 at this point. I think he’s a 2 or 3.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Agreed, he is not an ace. But it would be nice if
he could go 7 or 8 on days when he otherwise looks like a solid no. 2 guy.

For the money he is paid
I’d like to see him go beyond six innings a bit more. But man that guy labors through every inning. How many hitters does he start out 0-2 but then is unable to finish them off? Before you know it, he’s 3-2 on the hitter, with foul ball after foul ball. The guy had a two hit shutout through five innings, and I want to say he was at 85 pitches. That’s insanely high for a two hit shutout.
I guess that’s just the way he pitches, but laboring through innings seems to put tremendous stress on the arm and I’m very worried that ol Gil is going to find himself on the DL before too long.

I'm pretty happy with 6 good innings from a #2 or #3
Sure, I’d like him to go 7 or 8, but I’ll take a Quality Start from just about any SP.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
