This team is horrible

OK....

Release Jimmy Gobble....He had one good start 5 years ago and doesn't need to be on this team.

Trade David DeJesus.....We can get value for him right now...

John Buck is worthless....Drop him and bring up anybody who can play catcher.  Trust me you are not losing anything.

Actually anyone that was part of the Carlos B. trade should go...trade, release....I don't care just get rid of everything.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this team is horrible.

Release everybody and start from scratch

I’m pissed off, so just dump the entire team.

You think the team is horrible? Thanks for the update. Next time you want to make a post which says nothing more than “this team is playing badly and I don’t like it,” just put it in a little fanshot. This fanpost is kind of a waste.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

is there a single person on our team who was better relative to position than john buck last year?

some of the pitchers maybe…but he was really the only guy we had who performed above league average

TPJ...you're dead to me

I think you're right

I think Grudz was above average for his position. But Buck was probably more over league average for his position than any other Royal last year (among position players). This “Buck sucks” and “Buck is worthless” talk basically means that the person saying doesn’t know that hitting levels are different for different positions. For those people, I have a newsflash: catchers and SS’s don’t hit as well as 1B’s, DH’s and corner OFers. Something you might want to look into, guys.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I was about to ask, "what about Grudz?"

but NYRoyal, you heartless bastard, you beat me to it!

by DarthYoshi on Jun 12, 2008 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

1B and DH on average

Certainly not for the Royals this year.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

He's not Victor Martinez

THEREFORE HE SUCKS!!!

I don’t get the Buck hate either. His batting average and OBA are at career highs. The power outage has been troubling, but I think it will come around. Even without it, his OPS+ is around league average for a catcher.

I'm telling you we need to look for the future, time to trade the vets

1) Release that LOSER John Buck (more like John F*CK if you ask me!!111)

2) Trade Gordon + Butler + Greinke for Matt Weiters

3) Redo Soria’s contract so that he can never ever be a starter

It’s only a beginning, but the rebuilding has to start sooner than later

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

Are fits of anger and frustration worthy of a fanpost?

I mean, not every fanpost has to be a Pulitzer Prize-worthy piece of writing. But it should at least have some interesting analysis or issue to be discussed. “This team sucks” and “I hate player X” really doesn’t give one much to work with. I say, stash it in a fanshot or, better yet, blurt it out in a gamethread.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Understandable

I’d probably agree with you. But this wouldn’t be a true KC Royals blog without the occasional post like this one where you get the impression that Fedupwitheverything probably was the last kid in his class to learn the truth about Santa Claus.

by DarthYoshi on Jun 12, 2008 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

i am fine with it...

we cant have this after every loss, but every once in awhile it’s aight

by Freneau on Jun 12, 2008 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I certainly have no interest in it being censored

But it really does seem a waste to make it a fanpost. It’s more of a fanshot or comment. Whatever works.

But hey, he did just create the “fedupwitheverything” name today and I’m sure he wanted to use it today for his “I’m fed up with the Royals” post. It’s kinda cute.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

And the fact that they have no CFer

Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds are an absolute joke. I’m sure they’d have interest. The question is, would they be willing to give up a lot. It should take a lot, particularly since this isn’t a rental trade. We would need equal value, not value on a 2-month rental.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

im just really underwhelmed with anything that the Cubbies have to offer.

i hate felix pie….matt murton, ronny cedeno, etc….surely another CFer will go down. The cubs have some pitchers I like, but we need some bats in the worst way.

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Jun 12, 2008 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

You really have no interest in Pie, Murton or Cedeno?

You may be right. I’d like to get something more than just solid and more than iffy (like Pie).

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

not that i have NO interest...id probably take them all...just not for dejesus

i just think that we can find something more productive than Murton…800 ops from a corner OFer…i think we’ve seen that already…pie….who i give a very very slim chance of becoming anything…not real interested….and ronny cedeno has been 2007 tony penaesque in almost 800 mlb at bats

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Jun 12, 2008 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

You're probably right

Murton is a decent player, but likely a low upside. I think he will probably be very Teahenish without the great arm and baserunning. I like Pie, but I can’t say it is likely that he becomes a good player. It’s possible and he could even become great, but it’s a big question mark. And when you are trading away a good player who is a known commodity who is under a cheap contract for multiple years, you need to get back quality in return, not question marks.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

what is with all the murton love?

for the past 3 years, like every month, theres talk of him being traded for good players…and that he’ll be a huge piece of the puzzle for teams…ive never seen it

did you see that cegarra got lit up the other night?

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Jun 12, 2008 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Murton and Cegarra

Murton showed some decent hitting with the Cubs and I think he had good minor league numbers too. Pretty good, nothing to write home about. I think some people seem him as a guy poised to break out. I don’t see it.

I did see that with Cegarra. I’m not too concerned. You’ve got to expect some growing pains any time a pitcher goes up a level (Blake Wood also got lit up in his last start—his second in AA after a CG shutout), and this goes double for a 19 year old in high-A.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Murton

2008 PECOTA 821 OPS
2008 ZIPS 825 OPS
2008 Avg MLB RF 791 OPS
Teahen Career 763 OPS

by Gopherballs on Jun 12, 2008 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Now, park and league normalize those projections

If he has a .821 OPS in the NL with half of his games in Wrigley field, what do you think that would translate to in the AL at Kauffman Stadium?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Park factors would be essentially neutral per B-R's 3-year park factors (103 KC v. 104 CHC)

I am not sure there would be much of a league translation for a hitter this year (the DH is irrelevant to an NL hitter), but it would only knock it down a few points. He would still project as an above average corner outfielder under those systems.

by Gopherballs on Jun 12, 2008 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Let's look at what they've done

Using park and league normalized numbers:

Murton
Age 24 – 104 OPS+ (455 AB’s)
Age 25 – 100 OPS+ (235 AB’s)
Age 26 – not good but very few MLB AB’s as he’s been in the minors most of this season with a .811 OPS in the PCL

Teahen
Age 24 – 122 OPS+ (393 AB’s)
Age 25 – 98 OPS+ (544 AB’s)
Age 26 – 95 OPS+ (229 AB’s)

Teahen has been a regular over this course of time, facing his share of both RHP and LHP. Murton, on the other hand faces a disproportionate share of LHP (36% of his PA’s have been against LHP, whereas a RH hitting regular typically faces LHP in about 25% of his PA’s) because he has been a part-time player and pinch hitter. So, if you make him a regular, move him to less of a power hitting park and to the tougher league and he’s worse than Teahen.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

MLB Career OPS+: Murton 106, Teahen 100

So far, Murton has been the better hitter in the majors.

He also projects better than Teahen using park and league adjustments:

2008 PECOTA (park and league adjusted) Murton: 808 OPS
2008 PECOTA (park and league adjusted) Teahen: 778 OPS (Teahen actual 731)

And really, a 103 v. 104 park factor is neglible, and I am not sure there is a basis to evaluate NL hitters differently from AL hitters as you would with pitchers (again, the DH is irrelevant), as the quality of pitching in each league is pretty close.

You also cannot ignore Murton’s 2007 performance in the minors, which BP translated as 289/366/513 (879 OPS) with a .296 EQA.

The platoon issue does not hold water either because Murton has not shown much of a platoon split against RHP.

by Gopherballs on Jun 12, 2008 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Can you ignore Murton's 2008 performance in the minors? .811 OPS

And of course his stats would drop if he faced the percentage of RHP and LHP that a regular faces. As far as park and league differences, I think their OPS+’s speak to that issue very well.

In short, acquring Murton would be acquiring a very Teahen-like player. That doesn’t really help our corner OF situation.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Murton has better underlying skills too

While they walk at about the same rate, Murton strikes out considerably less than Teahen (14.8% to 22.6% for their careers). This is in large part because Murton swings at fewer pitches outside the strike zone and makes more contact when he does swing (both in and out of the strike zone). He projects for more power too.

The platoon effect would also be neglible, as the right-handed Murton has been almost as good as the left-handed Teahen against RHP:

Teahen career v. RHP: 795 OPS
Teahen career v. LHP: 682 OPS

Murton career v. RHP: 773 OPS
Murton career v. LHP: 888 OPS

Murton not only mashes LHP, he does not need a platoon partner like Teahen does.

And as an added bonus, Murton is likely to be short of arbitration eligibility after this year, while Teahen will be in his second year of arbitration.

by Gopherballs on Jun 12, 2008 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If only Murton were meeting any of the projections made for him this year

Instead, he is underperforming greatly, which should lead on to believe that perhaps the projections were more than a little too high. He projects for more power? When is it that we’re going to see that? He’s the same age as Teahen. And of course there’s Teahen’s defense, arm and base running. We don’t need to replace Teahen with another Teahen.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Murton rates as well as Teahen defensively per RZR

Murton has shown solid power throughout his career, while Teahen’s power has been largely confined to a few months in 2006. Sure, Murton has had one bad month in the minors this year. It happens. But it does not change his underlying talent. And it is not like Teahen has come close to meeting his projections either.

by Gopherballs on Jun 12, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm all for frustrated posts calling for roster changes

But they should have a modicum of logic behind them.
