Gameday here, what happened

I agree though, that Gathright is overrated in general. I think he’s a “good defensive player” in the same way that backup catchers are called “defensive catachers,” i.e., because they can’t hit.

Denny claimed

that the Royals didn’t bounce back well after the 6-5 loss the other night, I actually disagree. I was very surprised that they were able to get right back on the horse and grab another big lead, I totally figured that they would lay down 8-1. Same thing with today. Small progress perhaps ;-\ ?

One more stupid question (well, I have many ,but this will have to do for now)

I’ve looked many times, but is there any free website that keeps track of pythagorean standings during the year? It seems like that would be easy to find, but I haven’t been able to for long time (neyer used to have it on his free ESPN home page, along with the really cool Beane Counter, but that’s from days gone by…

One thought on Aviles and TPJ

I know it’s easy to get carried away when a rookie comes up and hits right away, but how many would rather see TPJ in the lineup than Aviles. When Aviles is at AB, I believe there is a chance he’ll get a hit, maybe even extra bases. With TPJ, I was waiting for him to make an out while swinging at terrible pitches or failing to execute fundamental baseball.

by daveyork on Jun 12, 2008 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

What kinda sucks

Is that when TPJ bats, that’s usually when I get something to drink or use the bathroom. With Aviles, I can’t take the risk that I may miss a hit.

I know

I’t just driving me nuts. It’s the first time in 5 years in this very competitive league I’m in that I’m in contention. I’ve got great pitching, but wins (and steals, another story) are killing me. I know chasing wins is bad 5×5 strategy, it’s just driving me nuts. I’m dominating Ks, bu bad luck for Beckett, Marcum, Buehrle, and now even Scott freaking Baker are killing me! I should have 3-4 wins already this weak, and I have 0.

No

The “hang on to Beckett” was in re: to the fact that you could probably get quite a bit in a trade, but you’d get fleeced b/c the best is yet to come. A lot of people don’t get fantasy timing. I should’ve assumed you were one of the smart cookies.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on Jun 12, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

NO need to assume

I’m OK, but the fact that I had the consensus best draft last year and ended in 6th says something.

If anything, I’m TOO conservative in trades. Last year I really couldn’t do anything, too many injuries (Kendrick, some pitchers, Rocco “Burn in Hell” Baldelli),. but I’m loathe to give up keepers. I probably should trade Gordon from a steals guy, as I’m real close, and could take falling back into the middle for the next year if I won (it’s that competitive—winning rules so much). But Gordon is one of my guys, like Kendrick and Granderson… fantasy is not real baseball, but I have a hard time giving up Alex just because Chone Figgin’s mananger is an idiot who will put him into position to steal 30 more bases this year…

On Marcum: did anyone see this coming? Are the Jays cursed to forever oscillate between good hit/bad pitch, or bad pitch/good hit?

How will we lose this game?

(a) Trey Hillman inexplicably puts Jeff Fulchino in for the 8th and he immediately gives up a home run in the water spectacular to Milton Bradley
(b) Mike Aviles commits an error leading to a run. Tony Pena replaces him on defense and is unfortunately up in the bottom of the 9th with the tying run on base and strikes out
(c) Soria is in the game and gives up a game winning pinch hit home run to Milton Bradley who then goes up to the announcer’s booth, murders Ryan Lefebvre and drinks his blood.

Two errors, a groundout,

Are we going to get a whole story on this game with the fangraph?

So we can obsess over this win? I forgot, we only obsess over losses.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair, the Rangers were never even really at 75% probability

unlike those last two Royals heartbreakers where the Royals were at least at 95%.

by mazoboom on Jun 12, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

After the opening series, how many times have we had special post-game threads to discuss a win?

Probably none at all. We’ve had many, many after losses. To be fair, Royals fans aren’t interested in being fair. They are most interested in bashing the team, bitching about what they see as mistakes and complaining about losses. Royals fans just don’t find wins to be very fun or interesting.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Man, of all people, you shouldn't be talking about knee jerk reactions. That's your bread and butter

What most people do is overreact to each loss and underreact to each win. I’m not saying people should be saying that the team is great because they won a game, but the reaction is nothing like what happens when we lose. Why people like you enjoy wallowing in the misery of everything bad that happens and you have little interest in anything good that happens, is simply beyond me. But hey, to each his own.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

It's called fair, objective analysis

...not emotional overreactions. You bash the players, the team, the manager, the GM, the front office and the ownership every chance you get. Do you think you are even trying to be fair and objective? Have you really fooled yourself that much? It’s this simple: the team loses, it makes you angry/upset, and you lash out at the team. Now, that’s pretty common for fans, but I think you can do better.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 12, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll just leave it at this.

I think if I lean too far negative, you lean the other way by an equal amount.

by djk royal on Jun 12, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

But, personally, I don’t think so. I always make an effort to be as objective as possible in my analysis, because I always want to genuinely know how good the team, its management and its prospects are. I try to recognize the good and the bad (and how good and bad those things are). Of course I definitely miss sometimes.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I Don't

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Jun 13, 2008 1:54 AM EDT up reply actions

No... he doesn't.

I think it’s important to note that 9 weeks ago when we were in first place, NYR was waving the yellow caution flag in response to everyone’s overly exuberant POSITIVE reaction.

THAT is his bread and butter; trying to keep everyone level-headed. By nature, that means coming across as “leaning too far positive” right now because everyone IS so negative.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Jun 13, 2008 3:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Thank you

If the Royals were a few games over .500 right now, I’d be very cautiously optimistic. But, if that were happening, the mood on this site would be extremely positive. Fans would be planning on getting to the playoffs, and talking about which prospects should be traded for a key rentals for a stretch run. I think if the Royals were a few games over .500 right now, they’d be overperforming the true talent level of the team (just as I think they are currently underperforming the true talent level of the team). And, in that situation, I would be working hard to put the brakes on around here. I’d be pointing out that this is a rebuilding year and that the overperforming players will mostly come back to earth, so we should temper our expectations and not waste prospects on an ill-fated stretch run (like in 2003).

MLB teams, players, managers and coaches learn early on that since the season is so long, you have to stay level. You can’t get too up when things are going well or too down when things are going poorly. Fans would do well to emulate major leaguers in that regard.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
