RR Minor League Project: Idaho Falls Chukers Pitching Staff

The 17 member Chuker's staff consists of a little bit of everything.  They have a rehabbing AAA pitcher and a highly rated prospect coming off an injury.  Add to that four 2008 draftees, three players up from the 2007 AZL team, and 8 non drafted free agents. The staff is made up of 9 righthanders and 8 lefties for an even balance.  Here is an alphabetical listing and a short description of each player.  As with any short season staff, we have to let the season play out to really see what sort of talent we have.

Carver, Jesse P LHP  L/L  6-0  183  Sr.  1L  Starkville, MS (Starkville HS)  Mississippi State U.undrafted free agent

Cota, Luis P   injury prone prospect. Tabbed as the Royals seventh-best prospect by Baseball America entering the 2005 season...Named Royals Minor League and Burlington Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 5-8 record and a 4.01 ERA in 26 starts for Burlington (A)...allowed just 143 hits in 148.0 innings, walking 63 and striking out 137 batters, good for fifth in the Midwest League and second among all Royals minor leaguers....Named to the Midwest League mid-season All-Star team.  Went 2-1 with a 5.81 ERA for Idaho Falls (R) in his first season of professional baseball in 2004...appeared in 14 games (12 starts) for the Chukars, allowing 61 hits in 48.0 innings...he walked 21 and struck out 40.
hasn't pitched since 2006.

John Foster.  The Kansas City Royals have assigned left-handed pitcher John Foster to Idaho Falls for a rehab start. Foster injured his right bicep earlier this year and will look to work his way back to the Royals' AAA team in Omaha and then hopefully on to Kansas City. Foster was drafted in 1999 by the Atlanta Braves and first appeared in the Majors in 2002. He has appeared in 90 big league games in his career, all in relief. Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho is where Foster attended school before turning pro. He helped the Warriors win a National Championship in 1999.

Great stuff

Love the info. I know very little about the vast majority of these guys, but there’s clearly some interesting stuff there. I’ve got to get out to Idaho Falls one of these days. I’ve heard good things about the community/atmosphere/stadium.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

IDF is a great place.

I spent the better part of a very hot week there in 2007. The stadium was brand new and they did a very good job with it. Not a bad seat in the house. The fans seem to e having a good time. The beer is cold and the dogs are hot.

After looking at Derrick Saito's numbers and size there must be something I am missing.

We drafted him in the 16th and unless I just can’t see it. I wonder why? Does anyone have any info. on this kid?

It's his stuff

He’s got very good stuff (92-93 mph fastball from a lefty) and projects as a reliever who could really dominate lefties. From what I’ve heard, his stats took a bit of a nosedive late in the season, but they seem to most to be uncharacteristic of his talent.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

But, this kid makes Nunez look big. I wish him luck.

True, he's tiny

5’8” 155 is a little guy. He can increase strength, but that isn’t exactly a projectable body.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

mostly what NY said...

Some saw him as a top 5 round pick early in the season before his stuff started to tail off. BA says some scouts thought his curve was the best on the west coast during that time. Get this guy straightened out and he could be a nasty LHP out of the pen.

sophomore year

he was awesome as a sophomore, terrible as a junior. 56 K’s in 35 IP as a So. He’s got really good stuff

Bryan Casey

He was a 20th round pick in 2005. We signed him as a draft-and-follow the next May, and gave him $235k (which is 4th round money). He’s been out since a mediocre debut in 2006, but he has tremendous upside as a reliever. Big, heavy fastball that topped out around 97 back in 2006 along with a curve and change. Profiles similar to Chad Qualls.

Started the game last night and pitched four very good innings. Definitely one of the more interesting arms to watch for the Chukars.

Great write-up

Just FYI….I’m working on Idaho Falls Chukars hitters. I should have that posted this weekend.

Great... I can't wait to read it.

I like Francis and the young catcher from Venezuala. Both look like they have potential.
