Soria is already 9th
he could be in the top 5 by the end of the season… but it’s gonna be awhile before Quiz or Monty get threatened
Mexituf Needs To
Knock Mack The Ninth off this list this year. I’m watching the Angels at the M’s; waaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! What a ridiculous idea for a baseball field. Hunter just robbed Reed of a double; we should never, ever think of Reed as a desirable trade option.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
all the more reason to abolish all talk of moving him into the rotation
moving up a team’s all-time chart in a super-duper meaningful category like saves = culture of winning
OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG
Soria, that is

Damn my lack of an "ESPN Insider" subscription!
I guess this is another stat someone here will have to develop…

Mike MacDougal update
He’s in AAA now, where he’s been most of the season, currently with a 6.75 ERA and more walks than innings pitched. That was a great trade.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
Here's hoping Ramirez is on that list in a couple of years

The real question is
will Soria stay as the closer long enough to reach 3rd? It will be close, as I fully expect to see him shifted to the rotation next season.
For you youngsters
Montgomery was a very good closer – above average – for a long time, but Quiz was the best reliever in team history, in my opinion.
He didn’t pitch long enough, primarily due to not reaching the majors until he was well past prospect age. (He converted to submarine style in a last ditch effort to save his career; without doing so he most likely would never have even made it to KC at all).
Quiz was a product of the infancy of the use of closers, and like Sutter and others of his era, he was often called upon for multiple inning saves. If he had had a longer career, I think he could have made a HOF argument.
The most amazing part of his game was his ungodly control. Goodness, if he were alive today and pitched exclusively to this Royals lineup, he might post a few HUNDRED innings before he walked even one batter!
Monty
It was like pulling teeth to convince the Royals to let Monty close. They had Steve Farr close for a bit, then felt the need to go spend millions on Mark Davis, still not convinced Monty could close. Monty never threw that hard, didn’t have some terrific split fingered pitch, but he threw strikes, kept the ball low, and had a pretty good slider. He put together quite a good career.
And we got him for Van Snider! Thanks Cincinnati!

might have taken a long time to convince the Royals to let him close
but maybe took longer time to convince them not to. 1998 and 1999 were pretty painful, IIRC
