Game 75 Open Thread - Giants at Royals

San Francisco Giants at Kansas City Royals, Jun 21, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Kevin Correia (5.17 ERA) versus The Epic (5.12 ERA) tonight at the K, as the Royals try to get back on the winning train.

I'll be at my high school reunion tonight, feeling like a failure and being awkward. The Game Thread is in your able hands.

Reunions suck

I went to mine two years ago. Waste of time.

Speaking of reunions, Brett Tomko is reunited with his couch. He was placed on unconditional waivers last night.

At Will's Reunion?

I’ll probably be at Wyandotte’s 35 year Class Of ‘73 reunion in September. I didn’t graduate from there, but I went to school with the people that did until I moved to Topeka. I barely know most of the Topeka West Class of ‘73. I hope to make a game or two, too.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Aviles just really impressed me.

The chatter here on RR the past couple of days has basically said that his biggest hole, right now, is the breaking ball low-and-away. Pitchers are starting to develop the book on him, and that is to throw breaking balls low-and-away, where he has seemed lost at times (as do most MLB hitters).

And today, he took a low-and-away off-speed pitch and just went with it, poking it over the second basemen’s head. If that is a longterm adjustment, and he can start getting hits off of the low-and-away stuff, then he will have a better chance at sticking as a SS longterm, obviously.

Just wanted to say that his last plate approach really impressed me…

by rockchalk on Jun 21, 2008 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

And again.

This time it was a FB, but it was again away and he just went with it the other way.

Double.

His approach, right now, is one that should be able to stick longterm.

As unlikely as it seemed just a week ago, we just may have found our SS for 2009 and beyond, if he can continue to adjust to the pitchers’ adjustments and etc.

I have avoided it so far

I did go to a reunion of people who were in graduate school with me about 5 years ago and it was a blast. But, I had much more in common with them than 99% of my high school class. I guess since I moved away, I’m not trapped in that environment like some of my old friends. When I do see them, it is like they never left high school. I find that somehow sad.

I don't know if it will be

It depends on how quickly we can get into the Giants’ pen. Lincecum is kept on a pretty tight leash—he’s only gone over 110 pitches twice this year. Running up the opposing starter’s pitch count hasn’t been our forte, but if we can chase Lincecum out of there after six innings, we may have an alright shot.

It also depends on how many walks Davies passes out tomorrow—if they’re going like party favors, we may be in for a long game.

"How the hell do you hit this guy?"

You don’t.

It’s really awesome to have a pitcher like Joakim around. Even with the team 10 under…he still rules.

by buddyball on Jun 21, 2008 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's my shot

Wouldn’t you rather have him dominating for 180+ innings instead of 75 innings? The reality is that closer innings aren’t extremely high leverage innings, so the importance of those 75 innings does not outweigh the value of a starters 180+ innings.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NHZ on Jun 21, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of those games are either low leverage situations or games in which another pitcher would have converted the Save

If he’s a good SP (not even a great one), the Royals would win more games with him in the rotation than as a closer.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 21, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

While I wholeheartedly agree that, yes, he should be moved to the rotation...

Tonight was the strongest evidence I’ve seen yet for why he should stay as closer. With only a 2 run lead, going into the 9th the K was rocking. The looping curve was ‘ON’ big-time tonight, and the crowd shots on FSNKC were quite funny. People were mocking the Giants’ futile swings in the stands, and despite the game being a relatively close one, with the tying deck always in the on-deck circle, everyone acted like we had already won.

Hell, FSNKC went down to Joel Goldberg with two outs left and talked about what the Royals postgame would be like “after a Royals win”. They tried to preface it with the usual “If they hang on”, but it was more-than-obvious that they fully expected for the Mexicutioner to close things down.

And I’ve gotta admit, it was pretty awesome knowing that the game was over, along with almost every other Royals fan, as well as the Giants’ fans. While many people overrate the psychological effects of baseball, there is certainly something to be said for basically being assured a win if you go into the 9th with a lead.

So, there is my argument for why he should stay in the bullpen. I completely want him to be moved into the rotation for next year, 180 > 75, but I think that if there was a argument to be made for him to stay, it would be that, especially with what should be a fairly young ball club with fairly young starters. Now, if someone like RamRod or Leo the Kid can come in and at least approach Soria, then that would ease much of the psychological scars. But even if not, as long as some can passably get the job done, I say move Soria to the rotation.

by rockchalk on Jun 21, 2008 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason why Joel Goldberg said if they hang on is because...

He jinxed them on that twins game when they scored like 5 to tie it.. so he doesnt say “After the royals win we will have so and so on the postgame show”

Ryan and Split were even talking about that a little

Split was saying something along the lines of, “You see the scouting report on Soria and it says his fastball is 90-91 mph, and you think, no problem…and then you try to hit it, and it feels like 96.”

by DarthYoshi on Jun 21, 2008 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Soria doesn't even throw all six of them

...he doesn’t need to.

My personal favorite comment on Soria from the Giants SB blog: ”...and us duscovering [sic] just how much of a badass the Royals closer is.”

by DarthYoshi on Jun 21, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

My personal favorite:

“this is the first time I’ve watched him. Best stuff I’ve seen this season.”

I guess Soria really is a secret that most of MLB (at least the NL) doesn’t know about.

If he played in NY, on the other hand…

its so true

and the mariano rivera comparisons are very true i think

by cfizzle on Jun 21, 2008 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

comparisons in what capacity?

Rivera is all about the cut fastball, Soria relies more on his slider and curveball in addition to the fastball.

Great win!

As long as we’re at .500 by the end of the year, the 2008 season should be considered a success by any measure: new manager, new #4 hitter, 2 new starters, etc.

I’m not going to lie: I’m still basking in the glow of the Cardinal sweep. That alone should ensure Hillman of at least two more seasons. – TL

This is a little late...

...but I just want to say thank you to the Royals for coming to St. Louis and getting a sweep. As a lifelong KC fan now living in St. Louis (for reasons I won’t get into), I got a ton of sick pleasure listening to all of the Cards radio talk bemoaning their pitiful offensive performance. Any vengeance I can get after being one of the very few Royals fans living in Columbia, MO in ‘85 when I was in fifth grade is very much appreciated!

Cool, jbrocato...

...I’m glad I’m not the only one around these parts! In about two and a half years here, I’ve only seen one person with a KC hat, and one dude with one of those “Royals: best farm team for MLB” types of shirts (so clever these Cards fans!). Once I stopped at a bar and asked if they had the Chiefs game on, and a couple of people looked at me like I was loony or something! Anyway, here’s hoping we sweep ‘em again at the K!!!
