All-Star Candidates
it seems like half of this board thinks that John Buck is one of the main reasons that we still suck....however, going by win shares, he's been the 3rd most valuable catcher in the AL and SHOULD be a borderline all-star, even though he wont be mentioned.

Do you really think that is what half of the people on this site think about Buck?
You may be right, but it doesn’t seem like that to me. I don’t read much complaining about Buck on this site (except for one infrequent poster). I think most of us are ok with Buck. Some fell in love with Olivo when he was hot, but he’s cooled off and I think much of the crazed Olivo love has petered out.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

it wasnt just the brocato guy...although he was the ringleader....
many others on here agreed and got all pissed off when buck was catching most of the games…even though the teams ERA is over a run lower when he catches and throughout their careers Buck and Olivo are identical players.

They're not identical
for my money, Buck’s better.

True, but I think those people are in the minority
But I haven’t really tried to count heads, so I could be wrong. But those people who prefer Olivo over Buck both now and particularly in the future are definitely wrong. Olivo is and will continue to be a good backup catcher and DH against LHP. I’m looking forward to flipping him at the deadline and calling up Brayan Pena.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

you really want brayan pena or just want to turn olivo into something?
would olivo be a compensatory type FA? would he accept or decline arb?...or was he a 2 yr deal?

I just want to trade him since he won't be back next year
I think Brayan Pena could be an acceptable backup catcher (certainly better than Matt Tupman). Olivo’s deal was one year with a mutual option. Olivo wants to be a starting catcher and since he knows he won’t be in KC, he’s very likely to decline his part of the option.
So, if Olivo declines the option, would the Royals then have the opportunity to offer him arbitration? If so, I guess he’d be a Type B FA.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Because teams are getting stingier with their quality prospects
I’d generally take the upside of the comp pick vs. the prospects that a team would surrender for Olivo (Kyle Davies or Mike Montgomery? Discuss). The only reason the trade makes sense this year is that the player truly being blocked by Olivo is Billy Butler, with as many turns at DH he gets and with the fact that Gathright’s (he’s really, really fast, dontcha know?) going to get enough starts (esp. at Kauffman and Comerica) to push Teahen to 1B enough times to keep Billy from getting all of his starts there.
Sometimes you just gotta roll the potato.
