I know everyone here hates the White Sox, so this might hurt, but has anybody else ever wondered how the hell Mark Buehrle stays so good? In other words, wouldn’t it be nice if Banny ended up like Buehrle (another low-K guy, although isn’t Buehrle more of a groundball guy than Banny?)

Buerhle succeeds
but throwing strikes, changing speeds, challenging hitters at the right times, and being durable. He’s a good comp for Banny, as is, I think, Brad Radke.

Yeah, but that's where emotions are OK
it’s bad analysis, but for fandom of sports generally, it’s OK. Indeed, it’s a positive character trait. It probably won’t make you a better ballplayer, but, man, that was the anti-storybook ending.
I hope he doesn’t turn out to have been a total bastard like Kirby Puckett was.

He always seemed like a nice guy
in the post game interviews (Radke), though I know little about him otherwise.
And cut the guy some slack…it’s hard to figure on what the Twins thought they were doing trotting him out there in the post-season.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on Jun 24, 2008 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Plenty of slack
I thought it was moving, whatever else. That’s what I meant. It was all the more poignant, from an emotional perspective. IN a way, for a guy to go down swinging like that after playing hurt the whole season, after spending his whole career playing for a team that was never quite good enough.
That’s REAL grit, not stupidly sliding into first.
Sorry, I don’t know why I get moved by this stuff. I just really liked Brad Radke, for some reason.

Radke was cool, and yes, it was pretty sad for it to end that way. That was gritty. David Eckstein diving for a ball that Mike Aviles could field is not gritty.

Yeah
the sadness was why it ruled, at least poetically speaking. It sucked for Radke and the Twins, of course. But appropriate—no helicopters taking him off the field, just sitting in the dugout. There’s a novel, or at least good essay in there somewhere.
I also got the impression he was faithful to his wife.

It’s really great to actually be up by more than 3 runs going into the last inning. Before, if we were going to win a game it seemed like it was almost ALWAYS a case where we were up by just 1,2 and god forbid, 3 runs! This team is really starting to swing the bat and it feels great….one more inning here!

So what are the odds that there is a bench clear incident (not necessarily a brawl) tomorrow?
I’m going to say 15%.

Shouldn't GRIT give us some idea what to expect?
Or is that yet to be incorporated into ERSTAD?
I think it will start with some pitches in tight, then move into some questionable slides… then someone takes one in the ribs.

GRIT = retaliation
Grit requires that the Rockies throw at one of the Royals players tomorrow. But after that, the grit situation gets more murky. One could argue that after the Rox exact their revenge, honorable grit requires that the Royals just take it and not retaliate in kind. However, gritty players are fierce competitors who defend and protect their players. So this could escalate to more HBP’s and perhaps a bench clearing brawl. I just hope these shenanigans get Aaron Cook ejected early. Then we’re talking sweep.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

In other words, after Olivo/Buck gets drilled
We can fully expect Gload (or Grudz, if he makes an appearance) to break a bat over Torrealba’s head.
(They have max grit)

I can guarantee that the first guy in from the bullpen running at a full sprint will be Team Ramrod
He was looking for a fight. I don’t know if what he did counts as grit or not. I do have a feeling that Hillman will be talking to him in his office with the door closed tonight.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Here's where irrationality comes in unbidden for me
Yeah, it’s stupid and really dangerous of Ramirez. Yeah, it could really hurt the team.
But I can’t help but like him a little more for it, although it would have the opposite effect if he wasn’t on the Royals.
Dangerfield.

Yeah, I kind of like it to (and I hate myself for it)
Lord knows what there is between them. But pitchers can really like their catchers, or really dislike them. It’s easy for a catcher to piss of his pitcher. But Ramirez showed some fire, some heart and, dare I say, grit. Perhaps misplaced grit, but grit nonetheless. The problem is, as Split said, he has to understand that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back of the jersey. That is a very trite expression which is as old as names on jerseys, but there is a lot of truth in it. If there are 2 out and the Royals are down by 5, then maybe you can use that opportunity to settle a grudge with your old catcher. With zero out in the 9th inning and a 4 run lead when you were allowed to stay in the game instead of the closer, you take care of business to help the team, period.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

There's A Fine
Line between grit and being an asshole; it frequently involves the name on the front of the jersey.

Joel Goldberg just said something about Buck claiming that….”yeah they hate each other”, but I didn’t hear the context of it or whether he was serious or not….

Damn, I wish I'd heard that
Now I wish the KC Star would do some good reporting on it, but they’ll casually mention it and sweep it under the rug. The Royals organization wouldn’t appreciate some real journalism here and the Star doesn’t rock the boat.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
