Around SBN: Reading The Javier Vazquez Trade Tea Leaves Bar-right-arrows

Whoa now children

So JoePo thinks we ought to sign Barry. I really think he underestimates the effect even a player like Barry would have on 3 months of baseball. Would the push for .500 ball be worth it?

At the same time...we are talking about signing him for league minimum. We've taken flyers on much, much lesser talent.

Edit: Definitely meant to say "overestimates", not "underestimates". He overestimates the effect of Barry.

Maybe not a bad solution to trying

to contend if the Royals would get within 5 games of first. Definitely a cheaper option and wouldn’t have to give any prospects up.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 26, 2008 2:53 PM EDT   0 recs

I'd do it, but let's not pretend that it is likely that it could be done

Some apparently think that Barry is so desperate to play major league baseball that he’ll take any amount from any team (don’t waste my time with anything his agent says. Agents are there to tell the truth; they are there for PR and spin). I’m sure he’s willing to play and he may even be willing to play for little money. But does anyone think he’s willing to play for an out of contention team with a losing record who is trying like hell to make a push for .500? Why so he can enjoy the many fountains of KC and 90+ degree heat through the dog days of summer and play for a losing team?

This is a pipe dream. Should the Royals try to sign him? Sure. Would he sign with the Royals. No way.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The outfielder, who turns 44 on July 24, has been offered by Borris to all 30 teams for a prorated share of the $390,000 minimum.

Borris said Bonds even would play for free—offering to donate whatever salary he receives to purchase tickets for children.

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 26, 2008 3:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hahahaha

It’s the tickets for children thing that makes the whole thing seem like a lie to me. Took it one step too far…

by Bornin85 on Jun 26, 2008 3:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What part of PR do you not understand

He’s selling the “Barry just wants to play” BS. He wouldn’t be interested in playing for the Royals, Mariners, Rangers or any other team in the bottom third, or probably bottom half of baseball.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

if that were true, you don't make public statements like that

with the union “investigation” into collusion, you can’t say that then not accept an offer. i don’t believe that to be a lie at all like your suggesting

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 26, 2008 3:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What the hell does his agent care about the union's collusion investigation?

There will never be more than circumstantial evidence with regard to collusion, which means there is no legal case to be made. And even if there were a case, that doesn’t help Bonds any. His agent is selling a public image of Bonds as a great guy who just loves the game of baseball and wants to play. He doesn’t care about himself or about money. He just wants to play the great American game. I can’t believe some people are falling for it. I guess that’s why PR people and marketers make so much money. There’s always people who are willing to be sold anything.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, but

What’s he going to add? Five wins?

I guess if we’re 5 games out that actually makes a lot of sense, but isn’t it being pretty generous to give him that many wins?

by Bornin85 on Jun 26, 2008 3:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

who would he replace

gload, olivo, german… 5 wins isnt out of the picture at all. bonds is unlikely to put us in the playoffs, but between him and the wins he producers, more coverage and attendance means more money for the team to spend next year

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 26, 2008 3:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Do you think Royals fans would embrace him?

I’m not sure they would.

thats one of those things you never know

at best, the team gets more revenue, at worst, it only lasts 3 months with some angry words from jim rome

For better or worse, fans love good hitting and HR's

If he actually hit for the Royals, fans wouldn’t love him. They wouldn’t exactly embrace him. But they’d cheer for him (witch a scattering of boos).

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 27, 2008 1:06 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

On the other hand, People rose to their seats and cheered

for every TPJ groundout due to his distinct lack of PEDs (dear God, I hope so).

He may be proof that HGH doesn't help performance

Have you seen the growth in his brow ridge?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 27, 2008 2:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A guy at BP before the season said that Bonds would likely add 6 wins to a team for the full season

So, for a half season, figure 3 wins.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

but thats over replacement level correct?

is our dh/1b spot (minus butler who would stay in) replacement level?

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 26, 2008 3:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ok, make it 4 wins...maybe

And who do you think he would take AB’s from? With Hillman as the manager, do you think Bonds would take more AB’s away from Gload or Butler? Add Bonds and Butler either rides the pine or stays in Omaha. All so we can maybe get to .500. Sounds horribly misguided to me.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

idealy, it would be butler and bonds splitting dh/1b right?

but yes, the difference of 3-5 wins doesn’t change much besides ~5 spots in the draft

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 26, 2008 3:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ideally, yes

But given the way Moore and Hillman have handled Gload and Butler, I think it more likely that it would be Gload and Bonds splitting DH/1B (although Bonds has never played 1B to my knowledge, so he might be a full-time DH. And unfortunately I don’t think Moore or Hillman is ready for Butler to a full-time 1B…that’s a key reason Gload would get a lot of PT in the Bonds situation and Butler would ride a lot of pine…or be in Omaha).

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

and honestly

i think this is a central reason why bonds is less desirable to Moore, he has a “bonds” in butler already, not a replacement for gload which is unfortunate.

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 26, 2008 3:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If Alex could learn anything from Barry's approach

at the plate it would be worth it to me.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 26, 2008 3:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Not according to BP

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I just don't think 5 wins is reasonable

AND I’d would HATE to see him take any ABs away from Butler. Not that he’s getting any MLB time now, but I don’t like that either.

by Bornin85 on Jun 26, 2008 3:15 PM EDT   0 recs

Jose would keep him in line

CF DDJ
2B Du jour
DH Bonds
LF Guillen
3B Gordon
1B Butler
RF Teahen
SS Aviles
C Buck

I think that lineup might score some runs.

(And if we’re going to “fiat” Bonds signing with KC, can’t we just fiat him playing DH and not taking at bats from Butler, who’s fiated right up from Omaha? Personally, I think he’d be signed to hit—and at his age, keep him out of the field.)

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by devil_fingers on Jun 26, 2008 3:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Has Billy been playing 1B in Omaha?

I’m guessing yes. If so, how has that been going?

by Bornin85 on Jun 26, 2008 3:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, he's been playing 1B in Omaha a lot

Moore was on the radio talking about it and said he’d been doing well there at 1B. But that’s a standard PR answer from Moore.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The whole position thing is Bonds easy out for why he wouldn't accept an offer from the Royals

“The Royals made you an offer, Mr. Bonds. Why didn’t you accept it?”

“They wanted me to DH. I love to play in the field. It’s the thrill of the grass. I just love this game too much to DH.”

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 26, 2008 3:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I say no

If it takes at-bats away from Gload, hurting his confidence, it will not be a good move.

Platoon him Gload and Bonds against lefties.

No Platooning for Billy!
