Of course I [Buzz Bissinger] asked for it by saying in Three Nights that sabermetricians don't love the game of baseball. That set their hair on fire. So did a theory I posed (I emphasize theory) that young pitchers get hurt because they don't pitch enough in the minors. It was four paragraphs in a 7,000-word piece about Kerry Wood for Play, and Wood himself agreed with the theory. What they really hated was that one of my sources was Tony La Russa, whose performance over the past four years, including this one, makes Billy Beane look like a Little League GM."
So much to love about this -- the Beane-LaRussa comparison, the notion that he was unfairly attacked, and more. My favorite is that Mr. Journalistic Responsibility neglects to mention that the "attacks" on Three Nights in August showed that he didn't even bother to do a basic Google search or consult the easily-accessible information that could have established the historical point about innings in the minor leagues once and for all. You see, Buzz, one of the requirements for something called a "theory" (as you so cleverly try to qualify it) is that it can be confirmed or disconfirmed.
As I've said before, I suppose he didn't have any money left for an expensive phone call or email to Stats, Inc. or wherever after picking up LaRussa's bar tab for a night or two.

I read through the entire back-and-and forth and, in all fairness, Buzz Bissinger is an arrogant, self important, judgmental ass
No snarkiness here. No vulgarity. Just a straightforward reading of his opinions. Even after he’s calmed down and gives more thoughtful responses, he’s still short-sighted, small minded and condescending. Buzz makes me look like a more considerate and respectful version of Mr. Rogers.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I probably dislike Buzz even more after reading that interview
but at least he really believes what he’s saying and at least this was a real discussion instead of a screaming match. What an arrogant prick. He has so much venom directed towards something he doesn’t even understand.
In a side note, this week of Deadspin blowout extravaganza posts have really been spectacular. Leitch is going out the right way.

Bissinger is just an anti-intellectual
the way I see it. It’s just an incredible claim that sabermetricians don’t like baseball. It makes no sense, and he’s got no proof…other than the fact that the average saber-hip fan is more knowledgable than him about baseball, which makes him petty and bitter.
Needless to say, the amount of credit given to La Russa is ridiculous given that Walt Jocketty was the one asssmbling the teams that Tony managed “so well.” Billy Beane is probably a better GM than Jocketty too, when it comes down to it.
Just shut the fuck up, Buzz. You’ve managed to get to the point where I care less about your opinions than Joe Morgan’s.

I love that argument
“If you don’t look at and analyze baseball the same way I do, then you don’t love baseball.” That is indeed anti-intellectual, immature and just plain stupid. His bizarre Larussa vs. Beane analysis shows how little he knows about baseball.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Yeah,
though it seems to be, also, “if you like to analyze the players and the game, you don’t like the game itself.” Very weird.

But I'm sure he'd be fine with analysis which includes batting average, HR's and RBI
...because “eveybody knows how important those stats are.” As long as you also analyze a player’s heart, makeup, character, desire to win, etc.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

No doubt
it’s just one of these bizarre, dinosauric reactions to some of the new stats that have been used to make our knowledge of the game better.

Like ex-players that say
“If you didn’t play the game, you don’t understand”....and they are embraced by pudgy nerdy sportswriters who haven’t picked up a bat since they were six.
