Game 81 Open Thread - Cardinals at Royals

St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals, Jun 28, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Unbelievable, huh? The first-half of the season ends tonight. Despite some notable rough patches, you'd have to say that it was mostly a success.

Beating the Cardinals would make it feel even better.

Butler is back; Callaspo is on the DL

I just posted a fanshot linking to the transaction announcement, but Billy Butler has been recalled and Alberto Callaspo is on the DL for treatment of an “unspecified medical condition”.

Perhaps Callaspo to the DL with mild alcoholism

And that’s only partially a joke.

Please start Butler tonight!

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

He can stand on 2B, but not play it

Seriously, though, I’m glad the Royals seem to be taking Callaspo’s situation seriously. This guy shouldn’t have been back in the dugout tonight or anytime soon. He’s got some problems to deal with.

Really?

Did I miss something? I’m not interrogating, I’m just interested. Have there been rumours of an alcohol problem?

The only problem we know if is that he doesn't have enough since to call a cab when he's out drinking

I think this DL stint and mandatory counseling is punitive in nature, but it will probably scare him into not screwing up like this again.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 28, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

"Placed INF Alberto Callaspo on the 15-day disabled list for the evaluation and treatment for an unspecified medical condition"

And that condition has to do with alcohol, I’m sure. I’m not saying it is alcoholism, but this is obviously all about his DUI. I don’t mind DL’ing him for it, maybe get him a little binge drinking counseling and calling up Butler.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

This buys German a little more playing time...

...while Alberto gets his head on straight. Two arrests in the past year can’t have the Royals feeling good about his long-term future with the club.

by cookierojas73 on Jun 28, 2008 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

These two arrests aren't a big deal

It’s not like he’s out of control. Lots of professional athletes have had arrests like this. These incidents alone shouldn’t give one much concern about his long-term future.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 28, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Two arrests in a year is a big deal

This is a guy who you would have thought would have grown up a little given the seriousness of the charges against him last year. Getting a DUI a year later tells me he’s still got some significant issues (substance abuse-related or not) that need to be dealt with. If I’m the Royals I’d be starting to at least think about other long-term 2B options.

Which reminds me: has anyone read anything about this year’s second-round pick (2B Johnny Giovotella) and whether he is considered to be a MLB regular, long-term? I know he’s signed and obviously KC likes him…I just hadn’t read any kind of timetable or projection for him.

by cookierojas73 on Jun 28, 2008 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Johnny G's ETA is 2010 at the earliest

He fits the Pedroia/Knoblach mold as a solid-hitting 2nd baseman, but he’s still a long way off from the majors and he’s not tearing up the Midwest League yet.

Founder of the Rowdy Hardy Fan Club

by eazyb81 on Jun 28, 2008 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Does everyone who gets a DUI have significant issues?

Or does one domestic violence and one DUI a year later = significant issues? I don’t buy that for a second. I think you are overreacting based on very, very little info.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 28, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

We disagree

In my opinion, I think it shows a pattern of being extremely irresponsible and immature, at the very least, and that’s being kind considering the incident with his wife. What more info. would we need to know about his situation before we know that he has issues? First he roughs up his wife and now he is charged with a DUI. This is a guy you’re ready to pencil in as our second baseman of the future, completely disregarding this behavior? Sorry, but I’m not quite there. Are we at the point where athletes can basically do whatever and we just shrug it off?

If I were arrested for beating my wife and then, less than a year later, pulled over for running a light while driving drunk, I surely wouldn’t expect my family or friends to waive these things off as insignificant. I would no doubt be on my way to rehab, and almost certainly divorced. And I seriously doubt that a potential employer would be looking to hire me.

I’m not writing the guy off but to me his behavior is a red flag…

Way to exaggerate.

I sometimes fear

that this team could be 72-0, and if we were down 5-0 in the seventh inning of game 73, the razor blades, Drano, and sleeping pills would be flowing like the Mighty Missouri.

Probably thought that from the bench, Billy could get a good view of the full effort Guillen puts into running to first on groundouts

(Yes, I know, I know. I couldn’t resist)

In good news, I was looking at Teahen’s numbers today. While his overall OPS isn’t any better than last years (worse, in fact), his ISO is actually up, and the walk rate about the same. The main difference I saw (from a cursory glance) is his BABIP—which is far below his career norm. So there’s some hope there for him. Go Ron!

Way to go down with your guns blazing, Trey!

I know the chances are it wouldn’t have made much of a difference, but still, you’re down to the final out—DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHO IS GOING TO BAT FOR GATHRIGHT, PH BUTLER FOR G-LOAD.

Heck, you can always pinch-hit German for Gathright. Unless you think those 70 ABs this year are definitive, and the 60 or so points of career OBP for German over Gathright are irrelevant.

sad game. stupid effing cards fans walking around there like they owned the damn place. UGH. Anyways, I got in a few good jabs; after that fly out in the 1st for Pujols I told the Cards fans around me (who’d just finished screaming for a homer) that “it takes a real man to hit a homerun in Kauffman! 390 to the alleys, bitches!!!!” Couldn’t help myself, haha.

Going to the game tomorrow, too. Section 431. I’ll be wearing the Greinke jersey, probably keeping score of the game.

Also, retro, i had some miller lite tonight. I still think it tastes like shit (though slightly better shit than natty)
