A brush with greatness - Royals style

Cool. It’s nice to see that Meche doesn’t spend his $11M per year solely on kobe beef and truffles. He’s the people’s pitcher.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Honestly

I am a bit surprised that he eats at McDonald’s. It seems like most modern athletes are very careful about eating unhealthy food.

I doubt most baseball players have very healthy diets

Brandon Webb loves cheeseburgers. Greinke loves Chipotle. I’m not saying most of them eat like Runelvys Hernandez or David Wells. But I’m sure most of them eat their share of fast food. They’re not world class athletes; they’re baseball players.

I’m surprised that an approximately 30 year old, wealthy man would drive around a truck like that.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

True, but...

He gets significant points for being a multi-million dollar player who owns a truck and goes to McD’s. If it were an old, beat up pickup truck, he’d get even more points. But he loses some of those bonus points for it being a “truck with a lift kit and nice looking rims.” The grittiest players eschew flash and glitter.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

McD's

Contrary to popular opinion it is not impossible to eat healthy at McD’s. Salads and grilled chicken are on the menu. That being said, I doubt that at 9:30 am Gil was eating one of those items. Rather, he was probably dowining something not so healthy from the breakfast menu.

I don't fight extra players.

by paleblueeyes on Jun 28, 2008 2:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A lot of those salads have plenty of fat

because they come with crispy chicken and/or bacon. And that doesn’t even include dressing. A salad without any of those isnt too bad for you, but unfortunately, there are much fewer of those kinds of salads on the Mickey D’s menu. And while grilled chicken on your McD’s salad is okay in terms of calories/fat/sat fat, but it adds a huge amount of sodium to your meal.

Long story short—it is quite a bit harder to eat healthier at McD’s than the presence of salads and grilled chicken would imply. I haven’t eaten at a McDonald’s since Eric Schlosser’s book “Fast Food Nation” came out, and I don’t miss it at all.

"Supersize Me" also wasn't a great advertisement for McD's

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 28, 2008 3:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No it wasn't

“Eat at McDonalds! Our food will make you throw up in a parking lot!”

As far as fast food goes, I do have a particular weakness for In-N-Out, but that is about it, unless you count Subway, which I do eat a lot of.

Just a shocking, groundbreaking documentary

I am STUNNED that eating nothing for McDonalds greasiest, fattiest food for a month straight is unhealthy. It really opened up my eyes.

I look forward to the next stunning expose: “Smoking: Bad Idea for Those Who Use Their Lungs”

That is an overly simplistic interpretation of Spurlock's work

In the movie, he also tried to answer the question of, “why do we still eat it, even when a lot of us know it isn’t good for us?” And, as Spurlock points out, there are a surprising number of people who eat fast food every day, or almost every day.

Plus, there are millions of people who eat at McD’s every day who probably have no idea how bad the food is for them—children. Not to say a kindergartener would grasp every nuance of that movie, but showing that movie in class to older students probably wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

by DarthYoshi on Jun 28, 2008 4:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What was the answer?

Now I’m intrigued. Any way you can sum up his conclusions on why Americans continue to eat fast food when we know how horrible it is for us?

A couple of answers

1) the power of marketing, 2) most Americans don’t much care how bad food is for them

Spurlock doesn’t explicitly answer those questions, but these are a couple of answers which came shining through.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

its amazing what people will do...

when they don’t see the effects immediately…you smoke a cigarette and don’t get cancer immediately…you eat a cheeseburger and don’t gain 10 lbs immediately…but its the little by little pounding your body gets until one day, that person is like “Holy shit! that really was bad for me!”...I can go on and on and on and on…I used to weigh 340 lbs. and am now down to a still very hefty 255 lbs and still battling food addiction…food can be a drug and I don’t think it is fair that all these foods us Americans eat have MSG and other additives that are proven to be cancer causing, addictive, and cause us to crave and eat more…another thing people don’t understand is how different one person can be from the next…the idea that so and so has smoked cigarettes for 80 years and are still fine, doesn’t mean the two you smoked for ain’t gonna snap you in the ass some day…I also see skinny people who never do any form of activity and smoke and drink and eat tons of food…and science has proven things about fat around organs that might effect these people and so on…

as far as Meche eating McDonald’s…we can’t assume he eats it often, and we are all allowed our “cheat days” or “cheat meal”...but I do know a pitcher that throws 4-5 excellent innings and then falls apart might have some issues with being at optimal health

I Rarely Eat

Fast food, but I eat whatever I like. I just don’t eat until I can’t eat any more. I’m 5’7” tall, weigh 195 dressed, and I can still fit into size 33 501’s (I wear very baggy 505 34’s most of the time; I feel so ghetto). Moderation is the key.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Jun 29, 2008 2:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And I'm sure people who eat fast food everyday or don't know how bad it is flocked the the theaters to see it

It’s nice idea, but the notion that it’s that great or made a huge difference, while I’d like to believe it would reach the right people and “educate” them, seems to me to be along the lines of Sasquatch sightings, UFOs, and Republicans being “converted” after seeing a Michael Moore film—I’m sure there are people who believe they saw something like this, but I just can’t…

I don't think that documentary made a big difference

A documentarian isn’t going to change America’s eating habits. It was well made, very interesting and made an impact on me. But most Americans are going to continue gulping down the cheapest fried meat they can get their hands on.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

How odd this was posted

I just got back from lunch and I saw Mike Aviles. I hope he didn’t fill up, and he’s hungry for roasted Cardinal tonight.

Seriously though, since I’ve moved to midtown, I’ve run into Mark Teahen, Zack Greinke, Joey Gathright (talked to him for a minute), Ryan Shealy and now Aviles.

Wonder if Meche lives in Parkville? That’s a neat little town. Maybe he lives in the Northland.

Wow, really?

I went to UMKC for 4 years, have spent a good amount of time in Midtown, and never seen a Royals player. Gary Lezak…yes, but no ballplayers.

Or, more precisely, did he ever run into you?

Hahaha,

wrong timeframe…he wasn’t even in our organization when I was in school.

But, I don’t see why I haven’t run into him in Westport recently…I’m a McCoy’s guy myself. Definitely wouldn’t do Kelly’s.

I just have always called him Sleezak...

because he is a complete douchebag like most anybody on morning weekday television…btw, I’m not very judgemental, huh? note: watch The Weatherman…very good movie that might have been overlooked…its kind of wierd I’ve seen it 4 times and I don’t hardly even watch anything more than once anymore…

weathermen piss me off…like they are gonna get the weather right…but they still have their fancy storm degree (which most used to not have anything)...and then they think they can crack jokes and predict what God is gonna do with the weather that day…Ha Ha funnyman…I wouldn’t worry if they were ever remotely close with the weather…but when its 5 degrees below the low for that day or when their 10% chance of light rain brings in a whopping T Storm it pisses you off…whoops weatherman wrong, “well you can’t predict the weather” whoopsies…”really you can’t predict the weather? than why try A-Hole!”...anyone see the Curb Your Enthusiasm about the Weatherman? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ8bynNwJ2w ENJOY THIS CLIP!!!

and whats even more annoying to me are these people that watch the weather for an effing hour…Dude!...high, low, chance of rain…Boom! thats all you need…took three seconds and I’m out the door to enjoy my day, and thats if I even cared…and then if there is a tornado everyone flips out…OK here is my deal with tornadoes: they are very serious, BUT, I would think that if a tornado hit your neighborhood (1 in bazillion chances), and then hit your house (another 1 in bazillion chances) and then did anything more than just take your roof off (another 1 in bazillion chances)...your probably dead no matter what you did, unless you have a safe room to go to (which a lot of houses have been adding for expensive)...you could die of a spider bite at any second…quit worrying and enjoy your life!!!!!!!!...ok got that out, time to go on with my day

and focs will have a stalker warrant soon...

btw…love your little tag line with your name…I like Drew Carey, but damn dude how does Bob Barker out do you at anything?...Drew Carey just don’t give a flip…guess he’s just like thinking the whole time, “I got 50 Mil for this, just stop caring” and then mutters endless crap into the mic…it was hilarious on I Love the New Millineum on VH1 the statement was, “Who else could they find that was that famous that had no other options?” or something like that…LMBO
