thoughts of the kauffman experience

Has anyone else been very disappointed in their experience at Kauffman this year? Perhaps I am simply used to the laid back ways of the past few seasons, but it seems Kauffman is now more of a social experience than a professional baseball game. Now I must sit next to women reading books waiting for fireworks, young women constantly on cell-phones, and people who have no idea which team the Royals are. We have an incredible, hugetastic, HD(human destructor) video screen that plays next to no replays, shows Garth Brooks every game and ridiculous lawn mower races. In the past, I have been able to ignore the ketchupmustardrelish race and the wave. Now it is most impossible to ignore the many things going on besides baseball, including the "host"? guy who is always "with his friend (broseph) in section 107." I have not been to another ballpark for a long time, and I do not know if this is the trend, but I do not enjoy the emphasis being taken off of baseball. The night when Olivio's bat broke and cut the umpires head, I started off the game in right field GA, before moving to right behind the Royals dugout. The umpire was hurt when I was out in right field. I knew something happened to him, but could not see very details at all. Nothing was said during the delay over the speakers or on the the super-visions! and incredibly no one around me even realized that we were not simply between innings. It was not until I moved, and asked the guy in front of me what happened. I was asked by someone behind me to be quiet and sit down as I expressed my displeasure for Mr. Gload and TPJ at another game. I was saying nothing inappropriate and I was not drunk. I feel this is part of the experience and should really happen more. As well I have heard about people getting kicked out for this this year, thanks to complaints by non-baseball fans who seem to just be there for fireworks. Perhaps I need to accept that the experience is changing, but I absolutely do not like it. I do not have cable tv, and could probably have had a better experience this year instead of purchasing another 21-game pack. At least I could yell at the tv without anyone caring and I can watch replays. Has anyone else felt less than happy with changes going on at The K Kauffman?

The experience

As crowd size increases (and it is slowly inceasing), the percentage of people there merely for a social experience increases. I go to many games at Yankee Stadium and it’s always like that. Lots of people just sitting around talking and not paying any attention to the game.

The umpire was hurt when I was out in right field. I knew something happened to him, but could not see very details at all. Nothing was said during the delay over the speakers or on the the super-visions! and incredibly no one around me even realized that we were not simply between innings.

Interestingly, I the same thing happened at the Royals-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium when the home plate umpire took a foul tip off the mask and got a concussion. The game was delayed for about 20 minutes while he was tended to and then the second base umpire went into the clubhouse to change into his home plate gear. To my surprise, at no point was any announcement made as to what was going on. Most fans didn’t seem to notice or care.
I was asked by someone behind me to be quiet and sit down as I expressed my displeasure for Mr. Gload and TPJ at another game. I was saying nothing inappropriate and I was not drunk. I feel this is part of the experience and should really happen more.

While I don’t know quite what you were yelling nor how you yelled it, but I have no problem with someone asking you to be quiet and sitting down. I completely disagree that the K (or any stadium) needs more fans yelling their displeasure at the home team and its players. That kind of thing gets really annoying fast.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

ive been to I think a total of 15 or 16 games this year...

me and a group of 15-20 go to all of the saturday home games and tailgate starting at about noon. ive been to 7 or so during the week where we just go and watch the games.

im getting about sick of people on here and other places who go to 1-2 games a year criticizing those of us who are out there supporting the royals like crazy as often as possible b/c we turn one game a week into a social event. last time i checked, major league baseball was entertainment. if you dont want there to be any personality, sit on your couch, with your scorecard and hotdog and watch from there…assuming you dont have a dog to bark to ruin your game watching experience.

oh, and the complaints about garth are ridiculous...

it gets the people who are wanting to have a good time good and pumped up for the most crucial innings of the game…absolutely no harm there either

I've been to 10 games or so this season at the K

Obviously, the game experience isn’t what it used to be, mainly because the stadium is in pieces. The videoboard looks good though – I agree they need to show more replays and less stupid minor league crap (lawn mower races, the annoying “game host”). As for people being there for the social aspect… who cares? Unless they’re obstructing your view of the game, I don’t see what the problem is. The more people there, the better – I don’t care why they’re there. The Cardinals game I went to last night was a blast, and I’ve had a good time at all the other games I’ve attended also.

Yeah

last night’s cardinals game was great. Fans were really into the game in my eyes and I actually saw quite a few replays, I was paying attention because I had heard someone talking about that on talk radio last week.

Notes from last night's game

1)Cardinals fans really embrace the “customize an authentic jersey with your own name on the back” option. I saw at least 20 (seriously) Cardinals jerseys with surnames like “Jengston” and “Svorlik”—basically, monikers with no major-league experience. Not sure whether to read anything into this (like, because they’re the ‘game’s best fans,’ they feel as though they’re officially part of the squadron and thus require a uniform), but I just found it unique. By contrast, I’ve seen maybe one Royals jersey in my game-going history with a non-player name. (In the obscure-player category, spotted a Nunally last night.)

2) I saw a Cardinals jersey customized with “Interestinghausen,” which was pretty great.

3) As we were leaving the game, we spotted a guy approach some people who clearly didn’t know him and salute them with “ultimate tailgate,” in a falsetto voice. They remained unimpressed and didn’t give him food/beers for his efforts, so he reluctantly moved on after a while.

4) On the topic of scoreboard gimmicks, they do a “Street Smarts” take-off where the ‘game show host’ goes downtown and asks people simple questions. This time, he asked “what’s 9×9?” and “where did Napoleon rule?” (most common answer “Dynamite, man!”), and dozens of people completely tanked. I realize the dumb results that were broadcast probably represent the minority of total answers received, but still, man.

I don't mind people yelling things

But I hate guys who yell THE ENTIRE GAME. No one paid good money to hear you and your witty heckling the entire game.

The vendor's take

The only other stadium I’ve been to recently was the new Busch.

The K has it’s PA system approximately two or three times as loud as it needs to be!
Combine that with the “minor league-esque” gimmicks as described by posters above, and frankly, I’m sorta embarrassed at times by what the Royals are doing.

It strikes me as more of an attempt to artificially create excitement, you know, rather than create excitement by actually putting together a good team.

The annoying guy everybody is referring to is “Tim”, and everytime I pass him in the stadium, I say, using that same false excited voice he uses, “There’s Tim!”. Don’t think he likes me doing that – but frankly I don’t care.

I find myself avoiding the big give-away nights. It’s better to go on a day they are not giving away something, less casual fans to deal with.

What really got me

Is that “Jaywalking” thing at Kelly’s in Westport. They asked some folks to identify a picture of Trey Hillman. They, of course, only showed people who got it wrong and made us all look like terrible fans.

Really pissed me off.
