Knuckleballers

Why are there not more knuckleballers out there? This doesn't necessarily have anything specifically to do with the Royals themselves but the game of baseball in its entirety.

I know, the knuckleball is not only tricky for hitters to handle, but for pitchers as well.  It probably takes a long time to figure out how to use it and even slightly control it.  But it makes very little sense to me that no one seems to learn it any more (or at least not make it to the bigs).  Seriously, what's not to like about a pitch that requires less effort/strain on a pitcher yet has the ability to absolutely baffle hitters?

Of course, it's probably a lot less likely to make it to the Hall of Fame or even to an All-Star game by throwing the knuckleball.  (I'm guessing, of course.  The % of knuckleballers in the Hall may actually reflect the % of knuckleballers in the history of MLB.)  Most pitchers, however, struggle just to be decent or retain a job.  I can't help imagining someone like Chris George, Nate Field, or Miguel Ascencio trying to learn the KB after failing in the Majors with what they already have or after blowing out an arm or something.  Even some position players might be worth a gamble--imagine Dee Brown in 2011 running out to the pitcher's mound to throw the KB.  There's little glory in being a KBer, but there is success.  Tim Wakefield has a yearly renewable player-option in his contract for life! No one gets injured, players get a chance to start over and even work above their otherwise-perceived-pitching talents, and teams can another quality pitcher (who, admittedly, may be unreliable due to the nature of the KB).  I'm just surprised by the absolute void of KBers when there seem to be several reasons and opportunities to try it out.  Discuss.

the problem with knuckleballs

is throwing them consistently. you can throw 9 perfect ones that are swings and misses, but that 10th one that doesnt knuckle is a 60 mph, no movement, home run waiting to happen.

had a friend with a devastating knuckleball and knuckle curve...

he could throw 85mph or so and his dad was a semi-pro pitcher that could paint the corner every pitch in practice…still have no clue why that dude never tried to make it through the minor leagues…I tried to convince him several times…maybe I teach my little girl to throw the knuckle and she will be the first woman MLBer!

Don't be lonesome for your heroes. Be your own hero.

In the late 1990s and...

...in the early 2000s, I think the Royals confused Knuckleballers with Knuckleheads. Most of their pitchers were of the latter category in that period.

But on your larger question, well, I think it has more to do with larger trends in baseball’s lower levels. There just aren’t enough old-school knuckleballers training the young guys, and no one’s sold the young guys on being interested. – TL

One problem

is that there aren’t many experienced KB’ers to teach it anymore.

I can

I can think of 3 KB pitchers in the major right now
Tim Wakefield
Charlie Haeger of the White Sox
RA Dickey for Seattle

but yeah, I often wonder why more pitcher do not throw the knuckler

Did Haeger get called up?

He’s been doing pretty poorly in the minors for the last couple of years.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Charlie Zink

Is a knuckleballer in the high minors. He’s kinda bounced around though.

One problem is that few catchers can really handle a guy with a good knuckleball

It gives rise to lots of wild pitches, passed balls, walks and stolen bases.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

No knuckleballer

Because no kid grows up wanting to become a knuckleballer. And even fringy guys probably think their stuff is good enough to make the big leagues. I think a guy who had an injury that cut his velocity down to 80-85 mph should tinker with the knuckleball. Or the outfielder who can’t cut it at the plate (that’s what Tim Wakefield was).

Exactly

I understand not wanting to be a KBer-there’s no glory. Even the Red Sox fans that love Wakefield would be fine if he retired. At the same time, I don’t see why players who really love the game and haven’t succeeded with conventional means wouldn’t try out the Knuckleball. I’m almost talking myself into doing it myself-if only I wasn’t committed to the monastic life!

No kid wants too???

Sorry, I’ve disagreed in a couple of posts with unfortunately seemingly everyone but I’m going to have to do it again.

Everyone wants to have a knuckleball. We (pitchers) are always tweeking it and working on it on the side, and everyone is jealous of the guy on the team with the best one.

The truth is that VERY few coaches would let a primarily knuckleballer on the field. Getting playing time is the hardest part of breaking throw into the majors. How you are viewed, stats, speeds, times. You can’t calculate a knuckleballs flutter, but coaches can gun the guy with the fastest velocity.

Most knuckleballers don’t make it because a knuckleballer would have to..

Convince a high school coach to let him pitch.
have a catcher who can catch the ball
Actually pitch enough to have a high win total
Get noticed for the high win count or low era and go to college to play
start over and convince the coach to actually let him pitch
have a catcher
pitch often enough to gain stats
have good enough stats to get noticed by the pros

and the process starts over again everytime he joins a new team. Believe me if knuckleballers were anything but unpopular by coaches and GMs there would be a ton of them. So much of who is in the MLB right now was subjective. I bet for every man in the MLB two or three others at the minimum could be doing his job at the same level or higher if they had been given the PT.

At least Wally Joyner's not on the team....

i forgot...

to put in the other route to compare with the knuckleballer…
Colt’s path
have a 100 mph fastball
done

He didn’t have to go through the never ending poodle show which is impressing people (who from the beginning do not even give you a clean slate, but negative start) and moving up.

At least Wally Joyner's not on the team....
