37-45

This feels like a bigger loss than it probably is in reality.

Terribly disappointing start from Banny, and the Royals blow a chance to go 5-1 against the non-rival Cardinals.

The key is that they have to stop the bleeding

They need to make sure that this doesn’t turn into a losing streak. If they start winning again, they can easily get within 5 games of .500 by the ASB.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

agreed

the royals need to break out of their weird inability to beat Baltimore thing this week

by Freneau on Jun 30, 2008 3:30 AM EDT up reply actions

That would be refreshing

In the very least, they need to go 4-4 over the next 8 games against Baltimore and TB. I wouldn’t mind a 3-1 followed by a 1-3, or a two 2-2’s. Then I’d really like for the Royals to go 2-1 against both the White Sox and Mariners. The Sox are a house of cards that’s going to fall any day now.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

especially about the White Sox, I’m starting to get worried.

Banny

I know I’m probably in the minority on this, but I really am not sure he’s a guy we can depend on going forward. Having a couple solid starts mixed in with a few awful starts just doesn’t give us the consistency we need out of a starter. He has a below-average stuff, and when he’s off he’s really off.

I'm not sure you are in the minority

I too am wondering about Banny going forward. While I really like Banny and want him to succeed, he might not be more than a #4 starter (Every team needs one). Is he still a very usefull starter, though? Yes I would have to say he is.

by I need more Esteban on Jun 30, 2008 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess what I'm saying is that

overall his numbers might look like a #4 starter, he’s way too inconsistent for a successful team to count on. He’ll certainly have a few gems, but about 40% of his starts he will give up so many runs that we essentially have no chance to win the game. I’d much rather have a back-end starter that can usually give me 6 IP of 3 or 4 runs a game, rather than a guy who will give up 1 run one day and 8 runs the next day.

Yeah I get ya

but most #4 equivalent guys CAN’T consistently give you 6 IP and 3 or 4 runs. That’s why they are #4 guys, because they go out and give up a bunch of runs every 3rd start. It’s an interesting debate, and obviously we will be able to tell a lot more by the end of the season. It might not be crazy to think that Hochevar and Bannister could switch spots as far as how good a pitcher they might be. We thought that Banny might be a #3 guy but he could be a #4 with Hochevar being the #3, might be possible.

Tim Lacy, avert your eyes

Banny isn’t looking like a front-end starter due to his inconsistency. But, I’m thinking he would be an above average #5. Check it:
1) Grienke
2) Soria
3) Meche
4) Hochevar
5) Banny

I can handle Banny’s version of mediocrity in the 5-hole.

Went to game yesterday

Banny just looked awful. Couldn’t seem to throw a strike if his life depended on it. I think he threw 32 pitches or so in the 1st inning. Although his defense didn’t help him out to much, i.e. Gator and Aviles. Also Looper had a tought time so maybe it was just the elements yesterday. I sure hope so.

by gordonrules on Jun 30, 2008 10:23 AM EDT reply actions

the game was frustrating

I’m more willing to blame the defense for that loss than Banny (though he did do plenty to screw it up for us).

Well...

If nothing else this team appears to be kind of streaky. Is there a chance a winning streak could be long enough to make us .550?

Maybe a trade here before the deadline will bring us a bat to make the losing streaks end and the winning streaks longer.

Bannister

Do the more important peripherals say anything about his performance being better/worse than his ERA?

His H/9

is running a bit high right now, at 9.67. K/9 – 4.96, BB/9 – 2.61, and HR/9 – 1.05 are more or less what you’d expect.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on Jun 30, 2008 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, his line drive rate is up to 21.1% (where 19-20% LD% is average and he was at 19.2% in 2007)

His 4.31 FIP is lower than his ERA, but the added line drives take a bit of the shine off that.

But still

we’re the 2nd worst team in the AL, and as much as I hope I’m wrong, I’d be shocked if that changes by the end of the season.

As of right now

We’d have the 6th overall pick in the 2009 draft.
