Play for tie in the top of 9th -BAD STRATEGY

This is why you do NOT play for a tie in the top of the 9th. If you suceed, you get into a situation where it is a tie game and the home team has up to 6 outs while you have only 3 outs. The 6/3 situation repeats itself throughout extra innings every time the game is tied after the top of an inning.

The Royals might get luck and win, but it still is bad strategy.

by Matt Klaassen on Jun 5, 2008 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

you're saying

that they have 3 outs to win in the bottom of 9, and 3 in the bottom of 10.

I think it’s a tiny advantage because you’re both going for one run anyway. It’s not as if the royals are playing to put up 4 in the 14th. The basic fact is, though, that both teams get the same number of outs any way you cut it, it’s just that one team always knows what it needs to do to win.

by Bart41 on Jun 5, 2008 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you are right about Yabuta

None of us can really measure the amount of adjustment that it takes to get to the majors and change nations. Language, culture, ball parks, internal pressure to do well. Yabuta has done much better lately. If he could become the late inning guy imagined during the winter, then a trade of a reliever wouldn’t leave as much of a hole.

by jonfmorse on Jun 5, 2008 12:29 AM EDT reply actions

6/3 is exactly the right analysis

As we go into the bottom of the 15, the Sox are guanteed that they will get at least 6 outs before they could be beat. On the other hand, the Royals during the same time period will get at most 3 outs and may not get any outs before they get beat. So you don’t play for a tie on the road, because a tie puts you in a terrible disadvantage.
