First

...for some reason.

Here’s hoping that Alvarez somehow drops to us.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

i would be completely unopposed to alvarez, beckham or hosmer

i know im in the minority on hosmer, but im a big fan for some reason

TPJ...you're dead to me

Yeah supposed to be a pretty good bat

what dayton and co. have better have figured out is if the difference between picking a near ready college bat like alvarez, smoak or posey is worth less than what a guy like hosmer will net us.

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

Hosmer has lots of fans

...including multiple draft “experts.” The top 5 draft picture is very murky. Lots of good talent there and little in the way of obvious front runners.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 5, 2008 5:26 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

In prospects we already have news

Blake Wood dominated…

Its nice having some decent pitching prospects instead of forcing ourselves to buy into guys llike Tyler Lumsden.

I can’t wait for some of the good hitters we have at high A ball to move up to AA and really show us what they can do.

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

by wildthang on Jun 5, 2008 5:03 AM EDT   0 recs

God I really want Justin Smoak though

ughh please?

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

If the draft rumors are true

...Smoak seems unlikely at this point. Probably Alvarez or Hosmer. Maybe Posey. Maybe Beckham, but there’s no “buzz” about the Royals and Beckham.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'd love to get...

...Posey. Have we ever had a decent hitting catcher (John Wathan? Darrell Porter?) in KC? – TL

by timlacy on Jun 5, 2008 10:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Porter was the best one

Macfarlane second best.

Scary as this sounds, John Buck might be third.

Fixed

In like four years three of the guys taken today or tomorrow are totally gonna be Royals!

Remember that the first day doesn’t cover much ground compared to what they used to before it was televised.

I'll be upset if we go Hosmer

We need bats to get here while we still have Butler and Gordon on the cheap, so unless its for Beckham, I hope we go college bat. Also, Hosmer’s a 1B, although that’s not as big of a concern.

Prospects & Hosmer

In addition to Blake Wood having an excellent outing last night, so did Duffy for the Burlington Bees. Our pitching prospects are looking pretty good.

I’m reading a lot of posts and from what I can tell Rany’s anti-Hosmer post has influenced a lot of people. At first I completely agreed; however, I’ve warmed up to the idea of selecting Hosmer. Having drank the GMDM Royal Kool Aid, I’ve convinced myself that if we take Hosmer it is because our people believe he can be a superstar while Smoak or Posey will be merely good players. There are more than one draft expert out there that think Hosmer is the best talent in the draft.

Another home run from Teahen is very good news. I think the Royals need exactly 4 things to be a good team: (1) have Teahen raise his offensive performance which includes more power; (2) have Butler return to form with some power; (3) acquire an average SS; and (4) get a productive 1b/DH to go along with Butler.

I don't fight extra players.

haven't seen Rany's post

but will head there now. (ps the folks that drank the kool aid all died)

Rany & The Kool Aid

Rany’s breakdown on the draft was great. The only down side is that it makes you fear the Royals picking Hosmer which appears to be likely if the Rays take Tim Beckham. Rany does say that if the Royals take Hosmer rather than say Smoak then they better be right about Hosmer.

Hilarious ps comment about the kool aid.

I don't fight extra players.

it appears Keith Law is in the Hosmer camp

it also appears he enjoys trolling Rany’s blog

Don't see what's great about it

He basically just regurgitates items he “discovered” in his draft analysis a few years ago. Stix posted all the star 1st basmen that were drafted in the 1st round out of high school over the last few years, so his theory doesn’t hold much weight from me.

Rany brings some interesting analysis to the table fairly often, but when it comes to the draft I’ll listed to the guys that follow it for a living.

RR

would it be possible to add a poll to this post? it would be interesting to see who everyone wants the Royals to take #1. Smoak, Alvarez, Hosmer, Beckham, Matusz, etc.

Some high asking prices per Sam Mellinger

It sounds like teams will be more willing to scoff at the slotting system after Porcello last year. The quesiton is, will the Royals pony up the cash to play that game??

Sounds like they are

They seem to be zeroing in on Alvarez and Hosmer, two of the ones making the largest bonus demands

Posey or Hosmer

If Beckham goes 1 and Alvarez goes 2, who do you think we will take. I think the Royals will take Hosmer over Posey and Smoak. I’m not sure who I would take.

I don't fight extra players.

by paleblueeyes on Jun 5, 2008 10:10 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I would take Posey

The Royals might as well, or you could be right and they could go for Hosmer. I don’t think they will go for Smoak. I can’t help but wonder if Hosmer is a smokescreen…all the “experts” say we’re cool with drafting another Boras client, but I remember reading several stories last year where the Royals brass were pretty irritated at Boras for letting the Moustakas signing go down to the wire.

by DarthYoshi on Jun 5, 2008 10:35 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't have the patience for Hosmer

I don’t have the patience to wait 3-5 years for Hosmer plus I don’t think he’ll sign. Boras so called good relationship with the Royals is bunk. Boras only has a good relationship with money and the devil. I hope the reports are wrong and they draft Smoak if Posey and Alvarez aren’t available.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

Luckily for us, you're not the GM

passing on an elite prospect just because you don’t have the patience to wait for him to develop is not a winning strategy.

Doing the "Ghosts of Drafts Past"

I saw the Royals selected college pitcher Jeff Austin in 1998 because he was the closest to the big leagues. Several picks later, the Indians selected high school pitcher C.C. Sabathia.

Plus

someone else pointed it out, but the top high school player(s) in each draft often gets to the big leagues about the same time as the top college player(s).

Baseball America ranks Hosmer as #1 HS player in terms of closest to the majors. He’s also #1 for power, #1 for strikezone judgement, and #3 for best pure hitter.

Boras client

When they don’t get him signed then we’ll see. Boras advised Moose to go to USC. Hosmer has already declared to ASU. If they aren’t willing to pony up the 7 million they could lose him. Take Posey, Smoak or Alvarez.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 12:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I would be

more willing to pay a guy more money in a position of need who could be ready to play by next year.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 12:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

So

catcher is a position of need, but a power-hitting 1st baseman that can field isn’t?

Also, I still don’t understand why having a guy up next year is so important (let’s ignore that Posey won’t be up next year for now….). We’re not going on a WS run next year, so who cares? Draft the best talent not who will get here the fastest. That type of strategy gets GM and scouting directors fired.

Founder of the Rowdy Hardy Fan Club

by eazyb81 on Jun 5, 2008 1:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Scouting is all judgement

and Posey next to Beckham has to be the best athlete in the Top 5 picks. Guy throws 96 mph, played SS at a power collegiate program and is gonna be a great catcher. With KC’s young pitching he could be our version of Joe Mauer for years to come.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 1:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And

He could also be Ben Davis.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Jun 5, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You act

as if Hosmer was a lock. HS are pure speculatory picks. KC’s scouts aren’t exactly wizards as the past picks have proven. Posey was projected as the 1st pick just a couple weeks ago so its not like he is a bum. Any pick you make is pure speculation.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Neither are locks

All of this is speculation. You seem to be wanting Posey because he’ll big a great big leaguer in a short amount of time. That is no guarantee my friend.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Jun 5, 2008 1:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes that is true

Posey just seems like he has a few more tools to lean on to make it the bigs. (arm, athleticism, great batters eye) All that being said sounds like the pick is gonna be Hosmer. I just hope he signs and then turns out to be as good as projected.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 1:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Huh?

Scouts are unanimous that Hosmer has the better tools and better upside. Your argument doesn’t hold much weight – you just don’t like Hosmer.

Founder of the Rowdy Hardy Fan Club

by eazyb81 on Jun 5, 2008 2:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

defensively, Posey has more possibilities

Hosmer will be stuck at 1B. Although he will likely be crushing things there. Early nick name “3 Run Hosmer”. You heard it here first.

by marbotty on Jun 5, 2008 2:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I hate when people do that on here

I just don’t like Hosmer thats me. Ya considering I’ve never seen the kid play. I don’t hate Hosmer I just would rather have someone who could make an impact sooner possibly. And I like Poseys versatility he reminds me alot of Mauer. Good arm good athlete good plate discipline.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 2:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Neat

Offense > Defense

Hosmer will be much better with the bat and is predicted to be a 40 HR hitter, while Posey has 15 HR upside.

If $7 million is too much for the Royals, $12 million is too much as well

If they aren’t willing to pony up the 7 million they could lose him. Take Posey, Smoak or Alvarez.

If the Royals are not willing to pony up $7 million to sign Hosmer, why would the Royals be willing to sign Posey for $12 million?

by Gopherballs on Jun 5, 2008 2:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Are you sure?

I wouldn’t give up hope yet based on BA’s projected draft. I would have diminished hope but I woulnd’t give up. Originally I was hoping for Smoak but I’ve become okay and even excited about Hosmer. If we pick Hosmer, I assume we’re ready to pony up for a big bonus—6 or 7 million. I don’t like that but I’m okay with it.

I don't fight extra players.

by paleblueeyes on Jun 5, 2008 11:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

BA's final mock

has historically been very accurate

i think 2006 they hit 28 of 30 picks or something

their guys are so close to MLB people, they aren’t your typical NFL mocks where its guesses, its actually a scouting director telling them who they will pick

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 5, 2008 12:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It won't be that high

The $7 mill number is just a starting point for negotiations.

He’ll end up getting around what Moose got last year – $4 mill.

Founder of the Rowdy Hardy Fan Club

by eazyb81 on Jun 5, 2008 12:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

ya

slots went up like 7-10% or so i read, so 4 + 7% probably

by ZeppelinDZ on Jun 5, 2008 12:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Boras advised Moose to pass on 4 million

if it wasn’t for the good relationship with the family he might not have signed. He was a last day signing. Hosmer might be a stud but we could use Posey. No significant catcher in the system. Plus he could be up by 09

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

by kcscoliny on Jun 5, 2008 12:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Extremely skeptical on Posey

He had a sudden surge in power. Is it for real? Can he hit with wooden bats? Is is a product of FSU’s field, known as a hitters park?

The guy was a fringe first round pick last year, now suddenly he’s a top five pick? That screams red flag to me. I think he can be a solid major leaguer, but I’ll be surprised if he he is much more than a 10-15 home run guy with a solid .280 average.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Jun 5, 2008 12:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd be thrilled

With Beckham or Smoak. I’d be mildly pleased with Hosmer. I’d be a mildly disappointed with Posey. Not that I don’t think he’ll be a good All-Star player. But catchers are very rarely impact bats, and we badly need an impact bat. I think Posey’s upside is more Russ Martin – .280/.350/.450 type hitter. Awesome to have, but not the huge bat like Hosmer, Smoak or Beckham could be.

Moustakous v. Vitters

Can somebody explain exactly what happened last year with the apparent last minute switch from us taking Moustakous over Vitters?

Moustakous v Hosmer

We took a hs bat last year and nobody complained yet this year a lot of people are very apprehensive over us possibly taking Hosmer. I’m guessing this is because Hosmer plays 1B and there are good college bats available. Thoughts?

I don't fight extra players.

by paleblueeyes on Jun 5, 2008 12:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes, that's right

Among other things, as I understand it you take a HS players because atheticism and ability indicates future growth, so shortstops are a good bet. College 1Bs are more physically developed, so you can see where they’ll end up. But the experts say Hosmer is going to be a potential A-Rod, so no worries there. When has Scott Boras led us astray?
