Here’s hoping that Alvarez somehow drops to us.

Yeah supposed to be a pretty good bat

what dayton and co. have better have figured out is if the difference between picking a near ready college bat like alvarez, smoak or posey is worth less than what a guy like hosmer will net us.

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

Hosmer has lots of fans

...including multiple draft “experts.” The top 5 draft picture is very murky. Lots of good talent there and little in the way of obvious front runners.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

In prospects we already have news

Blake Wood dominated…

Its nice having some decent pitching prospects instead of forcing ourselves to buy into guys llike Tyler Lumsden.

I can’t wait for some of the good hitters we have at high A ball to move up to AA and really show us what they can do.

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

God I really want Justin Smoak though

If the draft rumors are true

...Smoak seems unlikely at this point. Probably Alvarez or Hosmer. Maybe Posey. Maybe Beckham, but there’s no “buzz” about the Royals and Beckham.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'd love to get...

...Posey. Have we ever had a decent hitting catcher (John Wathan? Darrell Porter?) in KC? – TL

Porter was the best one

Macfarlane second best.

Scary as this sounds, John Buck might be third.

I'll be upset if we go Hosmer

We need bats to get here while we still have Butler and Gordon on the cheap, so unless its for Beckham, I hope we go college bat. Also, Hosmer’s a 1B, although that’s not as big of a concern.

Prospects & Hosmer

In addition to Blake Wood having an excellent outing last night, so did Duffy for the Burlington Bees. Our pitching prospects are looking pretty good.

I’m reading a lot of posts and from what I can tell Rany’s anti-Hosmer post has influenced a lot of people. At first I completely agreed; however, I’ve warmed up to the idea of selecting Hosmer. Having drank the GMDM Royal Kool Aid, I’ve convinced myself that if we take Hosmer it is because our people believe he can be a superstar while Smoak or Posey will be merely good players. There are more than one draft expert out there that think Hosmer is the best talent in the draft.

Another home run from Teahen is very good news. I think the Royals need exactly 4 things to be a good team: (1) have Teahen raise his offensive performance which includes more power; (2) have Butler return to form with some power; (3) acquire an average SS; and (4) get a productive 1b/DH to go along with Butler.

I don't fight extra players.

Rany & The Kool Aid

Rany’s breakdown on the draft was great. The only down side is that it makes you fear the Royals picking Hosmer which appears to be likely if the Rays take Tim Beckham. Rany does say that if the Royals take Hosmer rather than say Smoak then they better be right about Hosmer.

Hilarious ps comment about the kool aid.

Don't see what's great about it

He basically just regurgitates items he “discovered” in his draft analysis a few years ago. Stix posted all the star 1st basmen that were drafted in the 1st round out of high school over the last few years, so his theory doesn’t hold much weight from me.

Rany brings some interesting analysis to the table fairly often, but when it comes to the draft I’ll listed to the guys that follow it for a living.

Posey or Hosmer

If Beckham goes 1 and Alvarez goes 2, who do you think we will take. I think the Royals will take Hosmer over Posey and Smoak. I’m not sure who I would take.

I don't fight extra players.

by paleblueeyes on Jun 5, 2008 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I would take Posey

The Royals might as well, or you could be right and they could go for Hosmer. I don’t think they will go for Smoak. I can’t help but wonder if Hosmer is a smokescreen…all the “experts” say we’re cool with drafting another Boras client, but I remember reading several stories last year where the Royals brass were pretty irritated at Boras for letting the Moustakas signing go down to the wire.

by DarthYoshi on Jun 5, 2008 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't have the patience for Hosmer

I don’t have the patience to wait 3-5 years for Hosmer plus I don’t think he’ll sign. Boras so called good relationship with the Royals is bunk. Boras only has a good relationship with money and the devil. I hope the reports are wrong and they draft Smoak if Posey and Alvarez aren’t available.

Doing the "Ghosts of Drafts Past"

I saw the Royals selected college pitcher Jeff Austin in 1998 because he was the closest to the big leagues. Several picks later, the Indians selected high school pitcher C.C. Sabathia.

Plus

someone else pointed it out, but the top high school player(s) in each draft often gets to the big leagues about the same time as the top college player(s).

Baseball America ranks Hosmer as #1 HS player in terms of closest to the majors. He’s also #1 for power, #1 for strikezone judgement, and #3 for best pure hitter.

So

catcher is a position of need, but a power-hitting 1st baseman that can field isn’t?

Also, I still don’t understand why having a guy up next year is so important (let’s ignore that Posey won’t be up next year for now….). We’re not going on a WS run next year, so who cares? Draft the best talent not who will get here the fastest. That type of strategy gets GM and scouting directors fired.

Scouting is all judgement

and Posey next to Beckham has to be the best athlete in the Top 5 picks. Guy throws 96 mph, played SS at a power collegiate program and is gonna be a great catcher. With KC’s young pitching he could be our version of Joe Mauer for years to come.

You act

as if Hosmer was a lock. HS are pure speculatory picks. KC’s scouts aren’t exactly wizards as the past picks have proven. Posey was projected as the 1st pick just a couple weeks ago so its not like he is a bum. Any pick you make is pure speculation.

Yes that is true

Posey just seems like he has a few more tools to lean on to make it the bigs. (arm, athleticism, great batters eye) All that being said sounds like the pick is gonna be Hosmer. I just hope he signs and then turns out to be as good as projected.

Extremely skeptical on Posey

He had a sudden surge in power. Is it for real? Can he hit with wooden bats? Is is a product of FSU’s field, known as a hitters park?

The guy was a fringe first round pick last year, now suddenly he’s a top five pick? That screams red flag to me. I think he can be a solid major leaguer, but I’ll be surprised if he he is much more than a 10-15 home run guy with a solid .280 average.

I'd be thrilled

With Beckham or Smoak. I’d be mildly pleased with Hosmer. I’d be a mildly disappointed with Posey. Not that I don’t think he’ll be a good All-Star player. But catchers are very rarely impact bats, and we badly need an impact bat. I think Posey’s upside is more Russ Martin – .280/.350/.450 type hitter. Awesome to have, but not the huge bat like Hosmer, Smoak or Beckham could be.

We took a hs bat last year and nobody complained yet this year a lot of people are very apprehensive over us possibly taking Hosmer. I’m guessing this is because Hosmer plays 1B and there are good college bats available. Thoughts?

by paleblueeyes on Jun 5, 2008 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, that's right

Among other things, as I understand it you take a HS players because atheticism and ability indicates future growth, so shortstops are a good bet. College 1Bs are more physically developed, so you can see where they’ll end up. But the experts say Hosmer is going to be a potential A-Rod, so no worries there. When has Scott Boras led us astray?

Interesting Hosmer note by Goldstein

SBE (Nashville): Do you expect Hosmer to get tested as an OF by the team that drafts him, or is a 1st baseman all the way?

Kevin Goldstein: I was talking to somebody else today about this, and here’s the thing. He’s a big, big kid, like 6-4, 225 or so. And he’s 18 years old. So when he finishes up, he’s what? 6-5/250? He might be able to play there now, but you’d be wasting your time.

Every first rounder signed

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 5, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

All but a couple signed above slot unlike previous years.

The problem was not with players failing to sign (in recent years, virtually every first rounder signed), it was with the amount of the signings. Moving the date backfired with respect to slotting.

by Gopherballs on Jun 5, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the real issue over the last 5+ years has been guys not signing at all

That’s how teams really get screwed. Having to pay $1M more isn’t a big deal. Losing your player is.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 5, 2008 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really

In the last five drafts, only two first rounds picks (out of 150 total picks) failed to sign—Townsend in 2004 and Mayberry in 2002. The issue the last several years has been Selig’s campaign to keep costs down through imposing the slotting system on teams. At the time the signing deadline was changed, the reasoning from the commissioner’s office was that it would help give teams more leverage (as unsigned players could not increase their value by playing the next year). It backfired when most first round picks held out until August 15, at which time the teams, not the players, caved and agreed to above slot contracts. Selig this year has backed off holding teams’ feet to the fire on slotting.

But then again, I’m a sucker for college guys at the top of the first round. While Tim Lincecum over Hochevar looks awesome right now, Ross Detwiler over Mostakous doesn’t look so good now(I wanted Wieters, who’s doing awesome, but I have doubts about us signing him).

Because New Fanshots seem to be broken, I'll just put it here:

From BP:

Pena’s defense is four runs below average for every 100 games played, and he’s already cost the Royals two runs defensively in addition to his issues at the plate. John Dewan’s Revised Zone Rating agrees with this assessment as well, with Pena ranking 14th out of 21 qualified shortstops.

Kevin Goldstein (11:32:23 AM PT): 3. Royals take Eric Hosmer. A lot of questions about why Hosmer over the big college bats, because he’s more risky. He might be, but his ceiling, especially on a power level is totally ridiculous.

Not if you have four plus

pitches. It’s kind of “low risk, medium upside” versus “significant risk, good upside” and I think the picks make sense for both teams. The Nationals have a lot of back of the rotation guys in their system, so it makes sense to go for a high upside guy. The O’s have had quite enough of toolsy pitchers without results, and Matusz is probably the better bet to be an effective ML pitcher.

Just my 2 cents, anyway.

My only quibble

Is that the longer a player takes to get to the big leagues, the more likely something can happen to him along the way. But I worry about that far less with hitters than I do with pitchers.

here's the only thing

odds are at #3 and as a Boras agent, he’ll get a ML contract. so wouldn’t that start the clock sooner, and thus he’d be under our control for a shorter period of time?

I don’t know if that’s actually going to be the case, but if that was, we’d be better off with an older pick. (Please correct me here on this if I misunderstand the ML contract thing)

by marbotty on Jun 5, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

It depends

Abstracted from everything else in the situation, or everything being equal, of course I’d agree with the better player. We’ll just have to see how this works out. There’s a lot of experts raving about Hosmer, so I’m not going to try to criticize it. I’ll admit that it will be interesting, as always, to see what happens with him vs. the players he was chosen over.

by Matt Klaassen on Jun 5, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I see the sooner vs. better argument a lot like the pitcher vs. hitter argument

I can understand the preference for this pick to be a guy who gets to the majors sooner, just as many (including me) preferred getting a hitter over a pitcher. But while I’d love for the draftee to get to the majors quickly and help the team soon, I think the soundest philosophy is to draft the best available talent, meaning the player who you think will end up being the best eventually.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

So, here’s the goldstein #36th prospect:

36. Mike Montgomery, LHP, Hart HS (CA<)
What He Is: A tall, lanky, projectable teenage left-hander.
What He’s Not: Especially overpowering at this time.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: A scary good southpaw.
Backup Plan: A left-handed specialist out of the pen.
Open Issues: It’s a lot of projection at this time, as right now he has no pitch that grades out more than average.

I could live with that, I guess.

Steve Phillips is the sixth tool

Maybe the first.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Gammons sticking up for new philosophy

Less strikeouts, more hits! It’s a sabermetric revolution—

Apparently, being able to hit and hit for power is preferable to just a bunch of strikeouts.

Additionally, some scouts are allowed to look at a player more than once when making evaluations.

I’m learning a lot today. I’m taking the crown from NHZ and NYRoyal both with the help of Phillips, et. al.

No, that's why there's an identity crisis

And I’m from the ‘burbs. That just makes it worse.

Growing up a left-liberal means that I didn’t appreciate my lack of territorial heritage until much older. But probably I should avoid politics in favor of continued perving over Jenn Fischer.

More great stuff

According to Gammons (whom I actually kind of like for reals) says that Pat Gillick likes guys with “baseball ability.” This is practically a free on-line couse in baseball management.

I dunno, I know it is just a couple of swings on the video that is on ESPN, but I don’t see it. Swing looks long, no wonder they say he has trouble on the inside pitch.

My initial Scouting report (again after 17 seconds of video, I cant open the longer ones @ work) If he max’s out we just drafted Adam Dunn with more K’s.

I reserve the right to totally change my mind upon viewing a longer clip….

Adam Dunn sounds good

I want the Royals to sign him as a FA. Getting him for cheap in the draft sounds even better.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Wait, who's this?

Hosmer? Someone else?

I'm guessing so

by Scott McKinney on Jun 5, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh

I like Dunn, too, but I from reports I read (granted, that’s a limited number) he seems like he’d be a better contact guy. Also, Dunn-like power seems really difficult to project for young kids like that.

I guess projection are projections. For example: I heard a lot of Smoak-Teixeira talk. I’d take Teixeira over Dunn, but I’m pretty sure that’s a bad basis for a draft being.

I’ve actually wanted to have a Dunn-specific discussion. Is it too early in this season to start a thread on it?

I've heard Hosmer

Has some pitch selection issues, so he could be a high strikeout guy. Casey Kotchman has been described as a comp, but I think Hosmer will grow and develop more power than that.

It's really hard for anyone to project any of these guys

If he turns into Dunn, that’s great. But we really have no idea.

I’ve been thinking of a Dunn post too. I say go for it. It’s never too early.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 5, 2008 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe tomorrow

More of a discussion starter. Primary issues

1) where does he play?

2) Depending on where he plays, how much over league average would he be (thoughts inspired by a roundtable at lookout landing on DUnn).

3) Granted that it’s OK to overspend on a player in situations like the Royals, how much is too much?

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by Matt Klaassen on Jun 5, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

An important fourth issue to me

4) Old player skills and the development/decline curve. The biggest reservation I have about Dunn is that his body and skill set fits the profile of a younger player with “old player skills.” Without getting into detail (I’m sure we’ll get into it in more detail in the post and thread you start), these players tend to peak and decline early. This could mean that Dunn starts declining as early as 2009 and gets worse and worse throughout the course of his long-term contract. That’s the downside risk on Dunn.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

+1

real late… not that you’ll read this at this point,. but I was going to put that in. The Hafner situation accentuates this, although it’s likely something else entirely (and I think Hafner’s a very different kind of hitter than Dunn [more contact]).
