New Blog: Sounder At Heart for Seattle Sounders Fans!

drewfuss (KC): KG - Have you even heard of the Royals 3rd rounder??? Apparently they have already given up after 2 picks, and I should have given up years ago... sound about right?

KG: Royals fans are such a psychotic mess. This is really maybe a round or two too high, that's it. You might fall in love with him. He's a bigtime grinder with a nice line drive bat, a little bit of pop, patient approach, and he pretty much never strikes out.

I hate fans like that

KG is right, many Royals fans really are a psychotic mess. This schmo doesn’t like the Royals 3rd round pick so the Royals have “already given up.” What a jackass. And, in answer to his question, yes he should have given up as a Royals fan years ago. Clearly, he can’t hack it.

I think it is hard to describe the Royals first day of the draft as anything but a significant success. Hosmer, Montgomery, Sample and Melville all look like really good picks to me. The fifth and sixth round guys are just too deep in the draft for me to be able to speak to them.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

A couple of other BP thoughts on the Royals draft day one
Kevin Goldstein (4:02:35 PM PT): Tyler Sample at 80 to KC is Highway Robbery—I had a scout just rave about him early this morning.
Bryan Smith (4:37:22 PM PT): And finally, Tim Melville goes off the board at 115. The Royals would go from a good draft to a great if they can sign him, but it’s a tall order when you already have to sign the third overall pick.

If they do, though, the Royals will have taken Mike Montgomery, Tyler Sample and Tim Melville. If you asked me the three pitchers with the most projection before the draft, there’s a chance I would have gone with those three.

Kevin Goldstein (4:48:23 PM PT): I couldn’t agree more about the Royals’ affinity for young arms. If they sign Melville—they’ve have a monster draft.

And this one from another disgruntled fan (do the Royals have any other kind?)

Kevin Goldstein (5:21:18 PM PT): Brian (Kansas City): So does Dayton Moore realize that there are other positions of need besides pitcher? Shouldn’t the draft be more balanced?

Let me flip this on you. You take a high school pitcher in the 3rd round. You get to the fourth, and your five best remaining players are all high schol pitchers. Don’t you take one?

And drewfuss the doofus isn’t done bashing the Royals:

Kevin Goldstein (5:54:07 PM PT): drewfuss (KC): KC Royals clearly not phoning it in as I previously thought, but waiting until the 4th on Melville??? If he goes to UNC they get nothing! Take him in 2, or 3, and they get compensation! Its not like they were drafting All-Stars in rounds 2 or 3 and had to wait on Melville.

I guess I didn’t make it clear just how much I love Tyler Sample in the 3rd.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

How does this shot not get a "grinder" tag?

Also, Goldstein is surely using the word a bit ironically, right?

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

I don't think so

I think when commentators and analysts use “grinder” they almost never use it ironically. I think to them it means “guy who works hard and gets the most out of his talent, even though he’s not the most talented guy.” And this can be true of ok players like Eckstein and pretty good players like Pedroia, as well as over the hill crappy players like Erstad.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

But is he a baseball player?

I hope we drafted “baseball players”. I’d hate to draft Mike Montgomery and find out he’s actually the head basketball coach at Cal.

I don't think it is a bad pick

at all. The guy called him a 3rd rounder he was a 2nd rounder. This org needs guys who know how to recognize pitches to hit and Little G definitely can do that. More walks than K’s the last 3 seasons. Hard nosed Pedroia type should move thru the system and push Maddox/Bianchi to either perform or get out of the way.

Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

He is blasting us for not taking positional players

but their are still a couple gems out there. As for Melville it sounds like the family loves us and if we meet his price tag should have no problem signing him.

If anyone deserves to be a psychotic mess, it's us....

...covering thirty baseball teams excludes too much emotional commitment to one team. I’m guessing he hasn’t been a hardcore Royals fan the last 14 years, because he clearly has no clue what he’s talking about deeming us a ‘psychotic mess.’ Stand in our shoes, KG.

It is certainly expected that many/most Royals fans would be a psychotic mess

We may “deserve” it and we may have “earned” it, but the problem is that this ultra-negative psychosis leads to emotional overreactions and poor analysis. And those “psychotic mess” fans don’t realize or admit that their opinions and analysis are very much tainted by their “psychosis.” It’s easy to lose perspective or be objective when you’re team loses a lot. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive for perspective and objectivity.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Agreed

But our predictions usually err on the positive side, with regards to record and team statistics. If anything, we’re tainted by optimistic bias toward the team rather than negative bias. That’s why we’re fans.

Hmmmm
But our predictions usually err on the positive side, with regards to record and team statistics.

Perhaps so, if “our” means “most Royals fans.” I think most Royals fans hope and predict on the positive side, but then at the first sign of trouble, they go way off the negative deep end. It’s an emotional overreaction which leads to some pretty bad analysis.

Being a fan does not require emotional overreactions and analysis tainted and skewed by that emotion. But that is very, very common.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
