Promising Tim Melville News?
The St. Louis Dispatch had a website article on Tim Melville and his draft process here:
Some interesting portions:
"It's been nerve-racking," he said. "It was unpredictable. It's a little bit disappointing because I know I'm better than the guys going before me. It's just a number. It's just a draft number. I think it's more dependent on the team. We like Kansas City. … I felt the most comfortable with them."
-Tim Melville
"We're feeling awesome," said Tim's mother, Valerie Melville. "The Royals were a team he got to know and was comfortable with. … We are thrilled."
Early indications were the Royals would discuss meeting Melville's asking price as well.
"They are in the ballpark," Valerie Melville said. "It will all come out later."
Promising news to say the least, and it's nice to know that we've developed a nice relationship with the Melville family and that we're "in the ballpark." I like the fact that Melville is a bit pissed off about being passed up.
So what do you think? Will we sign Melville?

Thanks for the report. This is good news.
I really couldn’t handicap our chances at this point. If they drafted him in the second round, I would think that they are intent on signing him. Fourth round makes it more of a question. Would they give him $1M? More? Hard to say. It’s not like this guy is a Rick Porcello talent.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
Kinda curious
They didn’t take him in the 2nd or 3rd, where the pick is protected. That would give them a lot more leverage. Sign with us. If you don’t, we just get two second round picks next year.

Could be psychological, though.
By selecting him with an unprotected pick, you’re saying “We really do want you here.” He still has the leverage, but if the relation between Melville and the Royals is mutual snuggles, AND the Royals intend to pay him anyway, it’s a small mental payoff.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
+1
Haven’t we seen enough overhyped less-than-average pitchers to overpay a 4th rounder?
I think "Moby" would be a good nickname for him
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

OK, so he has to be the most boring/depressed guy on the team

Sounds like
Between $1.5 – $2 million will get this done. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Seems like the Rs are trying to play the odds here...
and I like it. Would you rather spend $1.5M total on two pitchers (Monty and Sample-1.5 seems about right to me) for a 15% chance of getting a rotation regular in 2012-2016 or would you rather spend $3.5M on three pitchers for a 25% chance of getting a rotation regular in 2012-2016? I’m not even close to confident that these parameters are right-maybe it’s 5% and 10%, maybe 25% and 45%, but the point is that signing three good prospects gives you a better shot than signing two, and with the cost of a LAIM at like $10M per, it seems like a pretty good bet to me.
my cards fan friend sent me an IM last night
telling me that she was so pissed off b/c of us drafting him. She went to the same HS and said that he’s a huge Cards fan so being drafted by the Royals is ‘LYKE OMGZ TEH WORSTERZ EVARRRR’
Sigh. And, of course, I can’t say anything in response because she’ll either tell me that I’m belittling her baseball intelligence or I’ll piss HER off by saying something bad about the Cards or something.

She is, after all,
one of the most [vaguely positive adjective] fans in baseball.
