Game 61 Open Thread - Royals (23-37) at Yankees (30-30)

Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees, Jun 6, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Former Brave Kyle Davies (6.16 career ERA) takes on Darrell Rasner (3.59 career ERA)  tonight at Yankee Stadium.

Being a .500 team is gone and it's not coming back.

(Curious about later draft picks? Check the post below.)

".500 team not coming back"

Now, now, there’s plenty of interleague play to mend our wounds. Things may look considerably better by the end of June.

The reports of this team's demise come 17 times a day

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 6, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Would like to believe .500 is attainable

But I doubt it. Our offense has not even approached a level of sufficiency where .500 is a realistic finish.

Our pitching is good to very good at times, but we can’t score enough runs to turn that positive into an ultimate plus – more wins.

True. Blue. Third Place in 2008.

I'm going to the Saturday, Sunday and Monday games

I refuse to go to a game where the temp is not over 90. Thankfully, while the temp hasn’t been over 82 in NYC yet, it will be at or above 92 for the Sat, Sun and Mon games. Fun!

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Roughly

How many other Royals fans do you run into at the games?

by I need more Esteban on Jun 6, 2008 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's really hard to say. I always see many Royals hats, shirts and jerseys.

I have no idea how to estimate how many it is. A few hundred? A thousand? More?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Good to hear there is some support

you should wear something specific so we know it’s you when they undoubtedly show a Royals fan at the game. Then you will have a TV appearance to go along with your radio showing on 810.

Look for a black Royals hat with a blue bill

And a white, midwestern looking guy wearing it. I’ll be in the lower level down the RF line past first base, not too close to the field.

Much as I love seeing the Royals play

I refuse to pay the price for seats at Yankee Stadium. The last Royals game I saw there was, an early Runelvys game, which research reveals to have been August 6, 2002.

I’ll be seeing them at the K on the 25th, against the Rockies, who I’m pleasantly surprised to see are having a worse year than we are.

In Yankee Stadium; that should make it easier for him. Olivo continues to DH against RHP’s, and the Great Gator Showcase continues unabated.

Maybe it's because

I attended Kyle Davies’ first game (against the Yankees, last year), but when I saw he was starting, I said, “Oh, crap.”

Then again, I haven’t been paying attention like I should. Announcers said Teahen has 6 HR, and I was thinking: “How did he get that many? Last I knew, he was around 2 or 3.”

I don't think there's a Christianity = peace truism

My dad’s a preacher, but when I was a kid, any time someone picked on me, he was always the one who told me to “just pop ‘em in the nose” if they did that again.

by powderbluepower on Jun 6, 2008 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, there is a Christianity = peace truism in the Bible, but not a ton of people act on it.

Not to impugn your Dad, but I never saw how “turn the other cheek” translated into “be sure to retaliate to any physical abuse.”

by Eppenweb on Jun 6, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I had that at my ready.

you have to realize: I followed up on my mom’s advice every time (don’t get into fights). But while there is a “turn the other cheek” passage, there’s likewise not a “allow yourself to be trampled by everyone else” passage, either. It’s pacifism with a purpose rather than mere passivity.

by powderbluepower on Jun 6, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course, the trick is how to interpret when your "purpose" is just or not.

I’ve read enough history to know we don’t tend to distinguish that very well.

Beating the Yankees makes up for a lot

And, I’m writing in a vote for Kyle Davies for the All-Star game. I don’t care if you can’t vote for pitchers. I’m writing him in anyway.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Suffice it to say that I'm not going to pass any real judgements on Davies until he's made another 4 or 5 starts

And then it will still be fairly preliminary.

could you

make a full team out of former Royals now starting in the majors? Zaun, Huber, Ibanez, Beltran, Damon…. could we have a full roster?

by powderbluepower on Jun 6, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A full roster, but not a good one

The pitching would be truly horrendous.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 6, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Most of the hitters are in the outfield, too.

Consider: Dye, Damon, Beltran, Diaz, Ibanez, Huber, Brown are all outfield.
Sweeney is about the only infield guy, and he’s almost a DH at this point.

...which is where he currently resides.

C – Zaun
1B – Huber
2B – Murphy
SS – Berroa, come Saturday
3B – hmmm…
LF – Damon
CF – Beltran
RF – Dye
DH – Ibanez
P – Elarton!

does anybody else wonder

after today’s start how the hell did Rasner have such a respectable career line? I mean he was an Expos pick so I semi follow him, the guy don’t have that impressive of a stuff. Good control sure, but that by itself shouldn’t cut it in the AL East, no?

by playingwithfire on Jun 7, 2008 8:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he's an ok all around pitcher who is on a good stretch

It will eventually be followed by a bad stretch, giving him probably worse than mediocre numbers overall. He’s just taking up space until Hughes comes off the DL.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
