Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Olivo the Great!

A completely unfair comparison (sort of) of the backup catcher from 2007 and backup catcher from 2008.

Jason LaRue (2007): .148/.240/.272, 13 XBH (4 HR, 9 2B), 33 OPS+ in 195 plate appearances.
Salary: $5.2 million (B-R.com – Note: Reds picked up a lot of that contract.)

Miguel Olivo (2008): .261/.302/.494, 24 XBH (9 HR, 15 2B), 100 OPS+ in 189 plate appearances.
Salary: $2.15 million (Cots Baseball Contracts)

Yes, Olivo is much better than LaRue

When good ol’ TPJ can out hit and out slug a guy…

of course, that was last year.

Pecota, watch over us.

career high OBP!

.302 has gotta be his career high, right

It is.

He’s never broken .300 before.

Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

That can't be right

LaPew only had 195 PA last year? I would have sworn it was about 300, and each one more excruciating than the last. I mean, remember how much complaining there was on here because Buck wasn’t getting enough PT/LaRue was getting too much. How can Olivo actually have been playing that much more than LaRue did?

On a side note, I’m teaching my son to be catcher. Only in America can a .148 BA/.272 SLG with 4 HRs and some vague notion of “game-calling ability” get you 5M a year. The bar for backup catchers is ridiculously low.

Good call

Seriously, there’s no other position where you can remain employed after hitting like LaRue did.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

LaRue was getting too much time

Olivo’s so many PAs are coming from being DH for a bit.

I screwed up.

Olivo’s OBP is .291 and his OPS+ is 105
