Steve Mingori, 1944-2008

In the wake of our thrilling comeback victory and Mark Teahen's eruption of hustle comes very sad news.  Former Royal reliever Steve Mingori passed away Thursday of natural causes at the age of 64.

Mingori, a native Kansas Citian, was a valuable piece of the Royals' division-winning teams of the 70s, although never being considered one of the stars of the team.  Our compatriot RoyalsRetro recently wrote an in-depth profile on Mingori, ranking him as the 62nd greatest Royal of all time, so I'll direct you there for more on his career.

I'm sure I speak for the entire RR community in offering condolences to the Mingori family.  Rest in peace, Mingo.

That's sad

I lived in the same apartment complex as his dad as a kid, and his dad gave me one of his hats one time. One of my first memories as a Royals fan.

Sad news

Sorry to hear about Mingori’s passing. He really was a solid relief pitcher on some very good Royals teams.

On a lighter note re. Mingori, I still remember the article Dan Quisenberry (another one who left us too early) wrote for Sports Illustrated years ago (I just stumbled on it here) critiquing the various ballparks and bullpens around the league. It contained this chuckle about Royals (now Kauffman) Stadium:

“Good view. Good amenities (for one, you have access to a water hose, which is a big plus, especially on hot days when you can hose down the fans). And good entertainment: Royals Stadium has these interesting beetles that we call Mingoris—after a Royals relief pitcher, Steve Mingori, a nice man who was not, shall we say, a very attractive man.”

RIP, Steve.

Wow

Natural causes at 64? That seems awfully young.

RIP Mingo.

If we want to be technical...

Wasn’t he born on February 29, which would mean he celebrated only 16 birthdays.

Nature can be cruel that way

Rest in Peace, Steve.
