Jeffrey Flanagan gets squashed

And...once again a mainstreamer strikes back with the ever-witty "Mother's Basement" joke. Okay, look Jeffrey, that doesn't fly with anyone, really.

Good Point About

Stat guys actually trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t in a game they love. Sure, a knee-jerk sac bunt keeps you out of the DP, but it also trades 33% of your currency for that inning. Baseball is the most intensely statistical game of the major sports, ruled in large part by chance. Figuring out what gives you the best chance of success is harder in baseball than the other sports. Statistical analysis is as old as the game itself; blow it out your ass, Flanagan.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Forgot to add a tag "guys who are doing a much better job at their hoby than at their real jobs"

and “can’t wait for Ken and his colleagues to write 3 decent episodes in a row” needs to be added, too.

Statistical analysis.

Why is statistical analysis in baseball wholy rejected by the vast majority of mainstream sports media, while in other sports, such as football and basketball, it is conveniently and readily embraced?

by Royals Nation on Jul 13, 2008 8:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Really?

All sports use statistics, of course, but are prospectus-type advanced stats really accepted more in football and basketball media? I’m not denying that there are tons of old-school media hacks who cover baseball, Posnanski’s not the only one who tries to keep up. ON the other hand, I can’t recall seeing Football Prospectus, for example, being quoted by mainstream football writers of Posnanski’s stature. Do football and/or basketball teams employ stats guys and develop proprietary methods of statistical analysis like many baseball organizations do.

I would hypothesize that the widespread popularity and accessibility (in terms of being able to subscribe to prospectus, buy James books, etc.) combined with the long term use of baseball stats in papers (especially the older ones that are now being replaced—BA, ERA, etc., sparking old-geezerism in itself) is what generates more visible resistance to those stats in baseball. Once they get more popular in other sports, there will be similar backlashes, perhaps a ban on adults living in the basements of family members.

Quarterback rating

I have no idea how that’s compiled, nor, do I imagine do most fans, but it seems to be embraced as a universal measure of quarterback efficiency.

I’ve also read its pretty antiquated and not a good measure, so perhaps that’s not the best example.

well, if you don't want to have to think and just react by "feel"

then you liked the way Buddy Bell managed. Ignoring statistical analysis because you are too lazy (I might write too stupid, but I don’t like the ad hominun attack route) to learn the process doesn’t mean you should make fun of it. I no longer read his column, it is usually full of nothing.

Hey

Here are the arbitron ratings for this week:

KCSP 5.8
WHB 8.1

Here’s what Ken Harvey is up to: he got signed by the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent league.

Here’s a tidbit – the new restaurant at Kauffman Stadium will be named “Rivals”

That’s basically a Jeffrey Flanagan column. The Star is looking to cut costs – hire me!

Athletes don't like stats

In answer to the “why is advanced statistical analysis rejected question. I think it goes like this:
- the majority of those doing the analysis were or are athletes. Because, you can’t know anything about sports unless you’ve played them at an elite level, duh.
- most advanced stats try to provide insight beyond what we can easily see on the surface, often resulting in determining that a player is not as good as people think or not as bad as people think. It challenges the bedrock of everything they were taught in playing (see: “productive outs”, “grittiness”, etc.).
- some of these stats dare to try to be predictive. Things like Pecota REALLY piss them off because they often predict their declines and no athlete wants to be told he’s about to be finished.

Notice nowhere in that did I say that athletes are stupid so they don’t like math, which would be the equivalent of the “mom’s basement” argument.

FWIW- when I first read that Flanagan was going to do the nickname thing, I thought the “mom’s basement” nickname was actually an homage to the FGM folks. But that was before the cheesy definitions.
