"How about waiving the rule that every team has to be represented? You've got these relievers from Kansas City, from Baltimore because of that rule."

Jay Mariotti, "Around The Horn," 7/16

If you think every every team being represented at the All-Star Game is an injustice

How about Jay Mariotti being represented by himself in the media?

Thank you! I’ll be here all week!

I think it's just another example of

douchebags in the media who have no idea really what’s going on, just dragging out the same tired old cliches.

I think that's a fantastic idea

New York and Boston and Chicago are hideously under-respresented in nationally-broadcast regular season games, and we seldom see them in the post-season. Please, please, let’s stack the All-Star game so we only see New York and Boston and Chicago uniforms too!

I would ask him which relief pitcher in Chicago is better than Soria?

Soria was deserving

I agree with Mariotii that not every team should be represented in the All Star game. It does seem that the All Star game has become more of a Parade rather than a game. But I have to draw the line at the suggestion that Soria was undeserving. 25 saves and a 1.47 ERA from a .440 team is the definition of an All Star. Suck it Mariotti

I love how the real heroes of the game were from the smaller markets, and the goats were the big market guys

Outside of JD Drew, who were the real heroes of the game?

Pittsburgh’s Nate McLouth with the throw to the plate
Tampa’s Evan Longoria for the Jeter-esque clutch double in the 8th
KC’s Soria
Baltimore’s Sherrill
Colorado’s Aaron Cook
Houston’s Tejada

And who truly hurt their team in the late innings?
Boston’s Papelbon
New York’s Wagner

yes Uggla was brutal too. but he didn’t directly cost the NL runs (i think).

look

I get it, we hate Jay Mariotti. I’m guessing though that the point he was making was that you could have added a couple of more starters to each squad and we wouldn’t have had the nail biting, will-they-or-won’t-they-finish-the-game drama. Maybe the managers should think about that a little more when making their selections, Greinke would have been as worthy as Soria and would have provided Francona a lot more flexibility.

I still think each team should have a representative, even if only so that teams like the Royals get embarrassed by having Mark Redman selected and hire a competent General Manager and start spending some of that money. My guess is that is when the light went on for the Glass family.

Did you ven read the quote?

You’re disagreeing him as much as we are. He’s saying that the rule to represent even the worst teams in the All-Star game should be ditched. He wasn’t arguing for Greinke over Soria, or Bedard over Sherril. He was arguing for picking the best 32 players in each league, mix of teams be damned.

No One

And I mean NO ONE likes Jay Mariotti. Not even in Chicago. Not anywhere. He’s a joke of a writer at a joke of a paper in a great town.

Other Chicago Thoughts on Soria

Carmen DeFalco, Jonathan Hood, Jeff Dickerson, who were filling in on the Mac, Jurko, and Harry show, admitted to now knowing much about Soria prior to the game. But, they admitted that they were thoroughly impressed by him.
