A really stupid idea...

Why not trade for Erik Bedard? From what I've been reading, it wouldn't take much to get him at this point. Maybe a trade involving guys like German, Gload, Lubanski, Lumsden or another low level prospect. Bedard isn't a free agent until after next season (final arbitration year) and could be a guy who we can sign to a two or three year contract and have him as a strong number two guy or maybe he has a good first half next season and we can trade him away for something of value.
I heard something on Baseball Tonight where they said Bedard's mental makeup of a guy who will perform well on a team that isn't in contention or is a second or third starter on a contending team. This would seem like a low risk move to me. Or maybe I'm a retard. This is likely.

I dunno
I don’t put much weight into speculations about someone’s “psychological makeup” as something measurable apart from actual performance.
However, without researching, it doesn’t seem completely insane (heaven forbid someone speculate on a fan blog!), depending on at least (but not limited to)
1) the size of his contract
2) the nature of his injuries in the past
Both of which matter not only to the Royals budget and performance, but also to the chances if he would bring back a sufficient return for the Royals to bother doing this.
Of course, it all depends on what the Royals would have to give up to get him—would the Mariners be willing to basically dump the salary? Then, that plays into issue #1 above.

Tough for Seattle to take that PR hit so soon...
Don’t know if they’d want to sell low on Bedard this quickly after shipping off Sherrill/Jones/et al. Obviously they are a mess right now, but that may be a PR disaster to send Bedard off and get a package of players in return that wouldn’t come near to what they gave to Baltimore. But if Dayton can pull it off, I wouldn’t complain.

Why would Seattle trade a great prospect for Bedard, and then quickly flip him for a handful of low-ceiling bench players?
Despite his issues, Bedard is a very valuable player. It would take significant talent to get him and it wouldn’t make any sense for the Royals to give up a bunch of talent for him.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'm just going from what I've read.
Nobody wants him and they want to trade him.

And if all they can get for him is a handful of spare parts, they won't trade him

I highly doubt
it’d be that easy to get him. Maybe if they move a guy like Teahen + pitching prospect, but not for those spare parts

Actually thats probably still
on the low side of what we’d have to give up

Bedard is a legit No. 1
when healthy. The only way the Royals will get him is with significant prospects heading to Seattle, and there’s the contract issue. Maybe we’ll get him in 2010.

JJ Hardy
is one I have been curious about. He has health issues, but he is a legitimate SS fairly solid with the bat/so-so defense and relatively young. The Brewers have Alicedes Escobar coming up behind him. What would it take to get him? Some bullpen help and Teahen? Any thoughts on this one.

Jason Bay, he is who I want the Royals going after.
He seems to be on the trading block. He is already signed through next season at $7.5M, and then he goes Free Agent. I’d rather the Royals got Adam Dunn this offseason, but Bay is not a bad pick up at all and might be signable to a LTD for significantly less than Dunn will demand.
Here is his cube. If I were GMDM I would sell some of that pitching currency he has been stockpiling to pick up this strong bat and capable fielder. Maybe Teahen plus one of those golden arms down in Arkansas would swing the deal?

Yes.
Willingham
I’d trade Cortes for him. I know, I know.
But Willingham is a legit middle of the order bat that would be under control for three more years.

Pretty risky
It would be quite a risk to use some of our significant trading chips on a guy who is only signed through 2009. The risk is that he wants to test the FA waters and the Royals end up only getting a rental.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

This team might be ready to compete in 2009
A year and a half fo Bay would be really nice, and I think the Royals would have a reasonable chance to sign him long term. I’d really like to see the Royals sign someone of Bay’s offensive calabier and I don’t think they will find one on the cheap.

The problems
1. As you pointed out the Royals would have Bay for 1 1/2 years. The 1/2 year he’d give us this year is pretty meaningless since the Royals are very far from contending.
2. I think this year has proven that the Royals are really, really unlikely to be contenders in 2009, so it is very likely that he wouldn’t be helping get the Royals into the playoffs in the one full year remaining on his contract.
3. I don’t know if there is any reason to believe that “the Royals have a reasonable chance to sign him long term.” I mean, they might be able to do it, and they might not. He doesn’t have any special connection to Kansas City that I know of, so we must assume that he wants to maximize his economic opportunities. That might mean taking a big contract extension offer from the Royals. Or it might mean testing the FA waters. If a lot of FA’s get a lot of money this offseason (and they will), free agency might look particularly appealing to him.
Long story short, giving up significant trading chips for a guy with only 1 1/2 years of team control is a really big risk for a team in the Royals situation.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'm not for or against signing Bay
but in fairness, NYRoyal, we could have a really good post-ASB and then all of the sudden we might feel like we could contend in ‘09. I’m not saying it will happen or is likely, I’m just saying it could happen. I mean, we already took 2 of 3 from Chicago in Chicago. We even did it where we caught some breaks (very rare).

Don't let the Royals fool you
they only won that series due to HIllman’s strategery genius. They TOTALLY outplayed their talent level. Awesome baserunning, brilliant pinch-hit decisions. Can’t count on that stuff working every time, though.

In all truth, with the line-ups the Royals put out there this weekend
they had no business winning. Especially with catasrophic starts by Grenkie and Bannister. German, Buck and Horacio Ramirez all stepping up. Really a nice weekend of baseball for KC fans.

The guy I'd love to acquire
is 1B Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres.
Don’t know if we could afford, or what we would have to give up, or even if SD wants to rebuild, etc. – just think he would be an excellent solution to our 1B problem. The guy already plays in a large ballpark, seemingly with minimal effect on his stats, and he plays good defense at 1B – an apparent prerequisite for KC, if not the other 29 major league teams…
by loyal2sdad on Jul 21, 2008 2:08 PM EDT 0 recs
Who wouldn't?
Not sure it’s realistic. He’s young, a very good hitter, and good on D. Can’t see why the Padres would be motivated to move him when they’re reloading, as well; particularly not at a price the Royals should be willing to give.
This does bring up a point that is alluded to a lot—given what the Royals have in terms of prospects for keeping and trading, being really committed to have “good defense” at 1B at the expense of, I dunno, a crazy idea like a first baseman that can hit like a league average first baseman, or, heck, even a league-average hitter, well, that’s going to make it pretty difficult for the Royals to overcome their offensive woes…

I doubt the Pads want to give him up
The thing is, in that division the Padres really aren’t realistically out of contention for ‘09. It seems as if Gonzalez should be one of the guys they’d want to hang onto through this down year.
