Deric Ladnier Q & A
Deric Ladnier, the Senior Director of Scouting for our K.C. Royals answers all sorts of questions for Royal fans. Some are kind of dull questions but some are interesting to see his take on different players. Check it out, if you have not already.

Clearly he's very high on Cortes
Considering he’s essentially a scout, that makes sense. Cortes is a very toolsy pitcher. Personally, I’d rank Rosa higher. I think he has the better mix of tools and performance. But, perhaps when Cortes is as old as Rosa, he’ll have achieved that level of performance too.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
Cliche machine.
I’d love it if he actually told us more about the players he was asked about.

I thought this was kind of interesting
“Ladnier: Our Minor League system has been designed to handle young players. We feel that getting them at a young age we can develop their skills to be a professional baseball player with the type of instructors and day-to-day influence we have on a young prospect.”
I do see a larger organizational philosophy of going young here, for better or for worse. I think that’s a big reason why they added the Burlington, NC affiliate. I would be Dayton learned from “The Braves Way” and wants to indoctrinate these young players in “The Royals Way”. It will be interesting to see how successful that is.
oroyals19: When you are first scouting a player, are you already taking clubhouse balance (leadership qualities and attitude) into consideration?
Ladnier: Those are as important to us as the physical skills and tools. We have to know that a player wants to be a winner and will do everything they possibly can to reach their maximum potential. That is the most difficult aspect of any scouting endeavor and requires a great commitment by the scout involved.
Meh. I hope that’s blowing smoke. Leadership and attitude should be factors, but as important as physical skills and tools? Please.
Also, he confirms the “Aviles $1000 bonus” story.

And not surprisingly
JTROYALS: Do you think the Hosmer signing will go down to the last minute?
Ladnier: If history truly repeats itself, then I would say yes.

Re: Aviles
lgroyal: Was Mike Aviles one of the college seniors the Royals reportedly drafted after the fifth round and offered a $1,000 signing bonus? If yes, congratulations on getting a Major League player despite the criticism that strategy has received.
Uh, thats not something to be proud of…
Is he serious here?
lh_bret: Is there an age minimum you’ll scout? I know of a couple freshman in high school here in TX that already have multiple scouts at their games!
Ladnier: Please send me their names as it is important to begin the scouting process at a young age. Watching a prospect develop over time allows us to make better decisions.
WTF? We’re now relying on random chat messages to find players? It’s minor but this was on odd response, it just seemed a bit pathetic to me.
sleekroyal: Is Joseph Dickerson our best OF prospect?
Ladnier: He certainly is one of our better outfield prospects. Derrick Robinson has the same type of prospect status or better.
The D-Rob love just will not die. I love the kid’s tools as much as the next guy, but at this point I think it’s obvious that Dickerson is ahead of him.

Possibly Adrian Ortiz as well
I don’t really get the D-Rob love, guess he really “fills out a uniform” well. Guys on Royals Scout say he looks more like Joey Gathright than Bo Jackson.

I don't think
him asking for names was too serious, but if you’re in his place, why not ask? I don’t think their scouting in Texas really depends on a local non-scout’s online chats.
And chances are if the prospects are that good, we’ve already seen them or are planning to.
"And chances are if the prospects are that good, we’ve already seen them or are planning to."
Agree, which is why I thought it was odd that he would say this. I felt it just seemed a bit bush league, but maybe I am taking it too seriously.

It was a joke
He was joking, as if to say “I’m interested in any and every kid who could be a decent prospect.” You took him much too literally.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

yeah, more of a joke
it was a live chat at the time, thats just the transcript, so it was most likely a quick answer that was intended to be a joke.
But even if it weren't
No team can really scout every high school freshman. They all have different sets of contacts. There’s a good chance we already know about the kids in question, and it’s even possible that our scouts are among those watching them already, but getting names never hurts. If we don’t have anyone on them, we send someone out to catch a game or two.
Hell, that’s how scouting works.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
