Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Well if Sam says it why not???

Mr. Sam Mellinger says the Royals should sign Raphel Furcal this winter (among other things). To this I say: Well duh. But it isn't going to happen. With the troubles the Dodgers already have at SS with Furcal (oh, yeah, he's hurt - there's a plus) I don't see how they would let him go. And I bet he will be tremendously expensive (in Royals terms).

While it would be nice to have the guy I don't see it happening. The one thing we do have going for us is that he is a former Brave. Yipee.

And

He only has one more DUI than current middle infielder Alberto Callaspo.

Paul Janish - Blocked SS prospect

If the Royals really want to pick up another body to compete for time at SS I know of a blocked prospect that might be picked up on the cheap right now and who holds out reasonable hope of playing well at the MLB level for another eight or ten years.

The Reds seem pretty happy with former Royal Jeff Keppinger at shortstop, plus they are still on the hook for another year and $5+M of Glovey Alex Gonzo (part of the Krivsky heritage).

Maybe the Royals should look at picking up Paul Janish. Janish is about to be lapped by Chris Valaika in the Reds depth chart so he is pretty well DOA. Janish has a plus glove and has shown he can OPS plus-700 in the minors. His minor league batt is fine for a SS (.264/.352/.386).

Personally I think the Royals need to find out what they have with Callaspo before they make buying a new SS a priority. But if they wanted to bring in another SS I think Janish would be an interesting under the radar player move which might pay off fairly well.

Good thought

I like Ben Zobrist of the Rays as well. There are probably a dozen other guys we could list.

Remember that list I posted

of all the guys the Royals COULD have drafted in 2K (and gotten ALL of them)?

I could have added Zobrist to that list without removing anyone else.

I like Zobrist as well

Here is his cube. He really has hit the hell out of the ball in the minors. Do you know how good he is in the field? I guess with Bartlett in place Zobrist is blocked as well.

I had read

He’ll make the routine play, but has very limited range. He was terrible defensively in the big leagues last year.

Limited range. His value is that he can play several positions adequately while also hitting his weight. But no, he’ll never be mistaken for a gold glover.

I think Furcal would be a good upgrade,

however given the presumably limited dollars we have available (just a WAG) but $20 mil, and Furcal taking up most of that, I would think that the most efficient use of resources would be a 1B/OF type like Burrell or Dunn (or a trade) and go with Aviles/Callaspo in the MI. Of course, if we could make a trade, then we could use the $$ on Furcal.

Agreed

We have limited money and we can only afford one top tier FA. And 1B or corner OF is the bigger need. If we can only afford one really big money FA, then it has to be a 1B/OF.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
