Decision 2008: No Respect, or, Nicknaming Ramon Ramirez

Rodneydangerfield_medium

What can you say about Ramon Ramirez? I'd say, as some recent discussion have shown, that he's currently the most underappreciated Royal. But the only issue I can pinpoint with respect to Ramon and the fans is that he isn't Joakim Soria. Well, heck, everyone knows that if a reliever isn't as good as Soria that he's barely qualified to pitch in a tight game, let alone close (psychological edge!!!1111).

But we're not here to discuss the abilities unique to Proven Closers (TM), or the relative value of starters and closers (if only there could be a discussion about that for once). We're here to series of nicknaming polls, this time making our choices with respect to the guy in the bullpen who doesn't seem to get any: Ramon Ramirez.

You can put it anyway you want it, but the nicknaming thing has sort of lost momentum due to my laziness. Not that anyone cares. Instead of laboring at length over this thing, I'll just do the best I can to remember the suggestions from various places and list them and let people vote away. It's hard enough keeping up with all the action after a few days off. A guy goes away for a bit, and all the sudden Butler starts to rake, Gordon hits a jack off of a lefty, and, most shockingly of all, Inspirational Team Leader Jogui Manwich, Team Baby Inspector, turns to to be a bit discontent. We can only hope that Avilanche can pick up the load in this time of crisis.

Wait, where was I? Oh yeah, I guess I was ignoring the man behind the post, as one might expect: Ramon Ramirez, the fireballing setup guy who doesn't take any crap from Yorvit "It's All Good" Torrealba (I mean, it has to be his fault, right? I'm pretty sure "Yorvit" is the name of a Type IV demon in AD&D. Um, not that I ever played that nerdy game for nerds...). Ramon gets so little respect, in general, that when I preview this post his tag is replaced with Horacio Ramirez! That shouldn't stop us from giving him a nickname, though. So here goes. I can't remember all the original posters, so if I get it wrong or leave it off, claim it later.

  • Ram-Ram (with or without the hyphen) seems to be the choice of many, and may have been used on some broadcasts. Meh. Seems kind of bland to me. But Power to the People and so forth.
  • RamRod was, I believe, broached by marbotty. Hilarious,  even if NYRoyal called it an "abomination." Hey, Paul Atreides' little sister was called the same thing, and that turned out all right, didn't it?

  • NHZ brought up Super Captain Laser Hero a while back, which seems outstanding, except I don't get it, it's long (blank blank blank blank[ed]), and he never produced the Photoshopped picture that was going to justify it (a picture I will post here if I ever see it [that's {blank} {blank} {blank}). But, hey, who am I to doubt a guy with a stuffed parrot on his shoulder?
  • Why not Dangerfield? Sure, it won't get used, but let's put it out there to make it interesting, like Lyndon LaRouche.

With this in mind, and a picture to meditate on, let us commemorate the Royals' eighth-inning man with a nickname.
