Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Some fans got upset and I got upset because they thought I wasn’t trying. I heard all kinds of stuff out there. It bothers me. I should catch that ball, but I was having problems coming in....

A lot of those fans, they’re really getting into my head right now. They don’t know what’s going on. Fans who understand baseball, they know what’s going on. They know I care about winning....

I feel much better playing away from home," he said. "I’m serious. I’m dead serious. Look at my numbers at home and my numbers on the road. What does that tell you?...

It’s been more fun for me to play on the road than to play at home. I wish we could go the rest of the season playing away.

I do wish the fans at the K would give it a rest

Booing him and yelling at him don’t help anything.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

i think the fans

are entitled to boo. I don’t do it, but that doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. I really don’t think what the fans do affects his performance. I think Guillen is going to keep being a douchebag regardless. He gets paid a crap ton of money to produce. I’d prefer he sit on the DL than stink up the outfield. I assume this is the general taunting he receives from the disgruntled fans at the stadium.

Sure, they're entitled. But it sure as hell doesn't help anything.

Think that makes the players feel better and want to play harder? Hell no, it just pisses them off. But it makes some idiot fans feel better.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 29, 2008 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course it doesn't help

but c’mon…when you sign a 12 million dollar contract and then you OBP .287 while acting like an ass in your first year with team…people are going to boo. It’s not like fans can do much else to express their displeasure with the players.

Booing an injured player for not being fast?

Come on

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

again,

it’s not about not being fast. It’s a culmination.

Booing an asshole for being an asshole?

Sounds okay to me.

The dude

goes out of his way to make it hard for the fans to like him. I don’t get it. Why would you be a jerk all the time? Especially in a city like KC? I mean, we’re a fairly forgiving bunch. We need something to cling to. I understand he was chasing the money and doesn’t care about the fans, but does he have to be an ass at every chance? Maybe he should just stop talking to reporters.

Don't Stop Believing!

by KC Chris on Jul 29, 2008 3:30 PM EDT reply actions

Forgiving bunch?

The guy has a significant hip injury which slows him down and because he isn’t fast down the line on one grounder the fans boo him. That’s forgiving? Hell, that’s just stupid.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 29, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

There are exceptions to every rule

Generally speaking, I do think Royals fans are a pretty forgiving bunch, especially compared to, say, Yankees fans. If Guillen played for them and their fans thought he was dogging it, he’d be hearing nothing but Bronx cheers.

I’m not trying to defend booing a guy whose mobility is limited because of a gimpy hip, but as Royals fans, we have tolerated the losing, bumbling management, and comical on-field play for years and years. And I would be willing to bet my next paycheck that if Guillen were to actually live up to the batting expectations that earning $12 million a year brings, a lot of Royals fans probably wouldn’t care if he becomes slower than Bengie Molina on the basepaths.

by DarthYoshi on Jul 29, 2008 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Then he should be on the DL

It’s not just not being fast down the line one time. It’s not running it out on the basepaths, making bad relay throws, sucking at the plate for the majority of the season, etc…

Playing with a significant hip injury that significantly limits you is stupid. It could do more damage. Not to mention the not being able to perform aspect.

And do you think we are not more forgiving than a major market team? I would say considerably more so. We have people that make excuses for TPJ for Christ’s sake!

by KC Chris on Jul 29, 2008 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

This is the bigger issue

I couldn’t care less if Guillen were a jerk or what the fans think of him. But why is he out there if he’s so obviously hurt? He should at least be DHing, and if he’s so hurt he can’t run the bases well, he needs to be on the DL.

by KC Chris on Jul 29, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Ask Sweeney about your answer!

Sweeney WOULD go on the DL when needed, and he got booed FOR THAT!

I think some of this is about money. KC fans seem to begrudge high salary guys out of one side of their mouths, while bemoaning the “unfairness” of small markets out of the other side.

Sorta silly, huh?

by loyal2sdad on Jul 31, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

That's kinda glossing over some stuff

Like him balking at playing a certain position at first, ripping the fans, getting into a scuffle with his pitching coach, calling out his teammates for being babies, and the added scrutiny that every fan base will give the highest paid player when he fails to perform.

That doesn't affect baseball players as much as athletes in other sports

You can be a wide load and still be a decent MLB-caliber baseball player.

I don't understand why fans take it personally when

players “act like a jerk”. He is not here to be your neighbor or your friend, he never cared one lick about the Royals until he showed up to play baseball here. if you want to go out there and boo him, fine, but don’t get all upset when he tells you, you don’t know what’s going on.

what puzzles me is that apparently Guillen

doesn’t think that the Royals brass is committed to building a winning team. During the early years of the Glass administration, I’d be inclined to agree with Guillen, but Glass has shown a substantial willingness to increase payroll, and I still have quite a bit of faith in Dayton Moore (or, at least, much more faith than I had in Allard Baird).

The thing is, there are only so many moves you can make during the season to make you competitive next year, and I think most people have expected that the Royals would be more active this December than they would be in July. While I don’t know why we haven’t, say, DFAed Pena, it would be ridiculous for us to build for next year through trades and such back in May or June when we could reap a better price in those trades closer to the deadline.

by DarthYoshi on Jul 29, 2008 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish he would

state what moves would be necessary. I mean, did he really think the team would be 180 degrees different by the ASB of year 1?

Hey, they signed Jose Guillen!

Note to Jose Guillen: if you sign with a team that has Jose Guillen as it’s cleanup hitter and highest-salaried player, they are likely not going to be very good.

So...

was Jose lying earlier when he said he didn’t give a blank what fans think? If so, that’s kind of babyish.

by djk royal on Jul 29, 2008 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

If he wants out

this could be good stuff. Think about it: you’re a free-agent. Jose Guillen hates it here so badly he’s begging to leave.

It’s GOT to be a good place to play, right?

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Jul 29, 2008 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

I cannot defend the booing of Royals stars

It would seem that free agents would see Guillen getting booed by a 2/3-empty stadium and logically conclude that KC is not a good place to play.

In over 20 years of going to Royals games, I have booed a Royal one time. It wasn’t a star player; it was a lousy pitcher who came in a trade for a superstar and he was giving up batting practice in St. Louis. I would never boo a good Royal.

by jbrocato on Jul 29, 2008 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

I can't remember ever booing a player.

I’m just not one to do it. But that doesn’t mean people who paid money to watch a baseball can’t boo a guy who is not performing. Especially if he is the highest paid player and he’s getting outplayed by guys making his weekly meal ticket. Booing is a common fans way of letting management know that a better product is needed on the field.

his splits

home: .254/.275/.409
road: .266/.298/.482

so he doesnt swng hard enough at home to hit for power?

The amateur sports psychologists should be all over this one

Why aren’t they talking about how all of the booing his killing Guillen’s confidence, etc.?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
