Game 86 Open Thread - Royals (38-47) at Orioles (43-40)

Kansas City @ Baltimore

Um.. I'm not good at math, considering I labeled yesterday's game "#87".

There's a huge difference between a 2-2 split and a 1-3 series lost, but to earn that split the Royals will have to top those unstoppable Orioles.

Davies v. Olson....

...not sure who’s got the advantage on that one. For some reason Lefebvre incorrectly said on the pre-game show that the Royals “have beaten Olson” this year, referring to Bannister’s 4-0 shutout. Perhaps he’s been sniffing too many marigolds, because the Royals beat Brian Burres that game.

Olson defeated the Royals in his start on May 10th…...who knows what Lefebvre is thinking.

The Orioles are the new A's

Why the hell do we struggle so badly against them? Is it the curse of Jason Grimsley?

by raefzilla on Jul 3, 2008 6:59 PM EDT   0 recs

No.

It’s the 17-year-old Curse of Chris Fucking Hoiles.

Chris Hoiles was awesome

Oh, wow

you just gave me goosebumps. Hoiles, Frohwirth, and the original G Olson in the same game. Wow.

Temporarily on hold

due to my former employer pinging me about an opening. No guarantee I’ll get it, but enough to cause me to not pull the trigger on a move-out notice just yet.

Good, I think?

Keep me posted on how that works out. :)

That article about...

Billy Butler realizing he wasn’t a good teammate was interesting…thoughts?

Seems to me he was just used to being the best player on the team and hadn’t adjusted to being an adult professional. Kind of like always being the smartest kid in the class in HS then being hated by everyone in college.

Yep.

For the record (I don’t think I mentioned this before), that stuff was said by an O-Royal who usually doesn’t talk shit about people, especially his own teammates. But he railed on Billy. It was startling to hear, really.

I'd say he's just misunderstood.

He and Zack will probably get along great…

Just to clarify: Guillen>Brown's 2007 team-leading total

He’s well ahead of Emil’s production in 2008 as well, of course.

Game Time: Which one of these things doesn't match up?

Players who have homered off Garrett Olson in 2008:

David Ortiz
Alex Rodriguez
Kevin Millar
Jason Varitek
Dustin Pedroia
Cort Hart
Bill Hall
Billy Butler
Tony Pena Jr

by philofthenorth on Jul 3, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nah

I was a switch hitter, but my SLG was about 100 points higher right-handed, and my AVG was about 100 points higher lefty.

I Always Hit

Left some in practice, but I never tried it in a baseball game. I did it a lot in slow-pitch. I was over .500 as an RH, so I didn’t have much reason to change.

by philofthenorth on Jul 3, 2008 7:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Follow-up to Minda's earlier point about Guillen already passing Brown's 2007 total

We might have at least four, possibly five, players pass Buck’s team-leading 18 HR (2007).
Teahen
Gordon
Guillen
DeJesus
Olivo?

Of course, a team-loading total of 24 or so isn’t too fancy, but, baby steps.

by andrewmiller on Jul 3, 2008 7:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Interestingly

I don’t think we’ve ever had five guys even hit 20.
