Game 109 Open Thread - Royals (49-59) at A's (53-53)

Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics, Jul 30, 2008 3:35 PM EDT

It's all setup for Brian Bannister (5.40 ERA) to not be horrible today. He's in a mostly flyball friendly park, the A's struggle offensively, and, if it still matters, it's a day game. Plus, this is a getaway day game. Banny, show us there's still a reason to care...

The A's counter with Sean Gallagher (4.03 ERA).

Second...

I;m getting really frustrated with Banny.
He never pitches like his numbers say he should.
Thats all well and good, when he is supposed to be a 5.50 ERA guy…and throws a 3.69 ERA
But this year he should be about 4.5…and instead has a 5.40…What gives?

I refuse to set up a signature....DAMMIT

Interesting lineup today

Aviles 2B
Maier CF
Gordon 3B
Guillen RF
Teahen LF
Butler DH
Gload 1B
Olivo C
Pena SS

And by interesting, I mean Gload sucks.

i personally,

would of gone with esteban at 2B and aviles at SS. But im kinda weird, im sure im the only one who would rather see that.

by cfizzle on Jul 30, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

That is interesting.

Let’s not put Olivo in against the Lefties to start the series, but not that the A’s start a righty, Olivo gets the start. No grud or DDJ for Maier and Pena. Hope we get some runs today.

by KCScuba on Jul 30, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It might be a good sign

Olivo is just being treated like a #2 catcher (which he is)—starting a day game after a night game to rest the #1.

Just a kind of weird note:

Aviles has been a much worse fielder at 2B than he has been at SS, as per RZR. Hard to figure on why.

And that line-up looks terrible…no DDJ, Pena in, Olivo vs. a righty, Maier batting 2nd…

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

With Pena and Gload...

in the lineup with their plus plus defense we only need one run to win the game.

Jose Guillen was back in right field despite problems with his left hip flexor.

“Straight on, he seems to be OK, but anything that requires him to go side to side, he’s tentative,” Hillman said. “At the plate, his swings look max effort. My biggest worry is getting out of the box. I told him to be real careful, I don’t want him trying to beat anything out.”
