Game 109 Overflow Thread

Years from now, having lived through everything that once made life sweet, we'll be telling our grandchildren about this Bannister-Gallagher duel.

In the short term, we have Aviles and Maier as the sparkplugs of our potent offense. Build around them Dayton, build around them.

Scott Bankhead.

He was great – we turned him into Danny Tartabull via a brilliant trade.

A question for anyone actually watching the game

It isn’t on MLB Extra Innings, so I can’t watch it, but the live box score says that Bannister is pitching, but that the guy has 7 k’s and 4 bb in 5 innings. That can’t be Bannister, right? Is it actually Davies or Tejeda that’s pitching?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Guillen

will have 12 GWRBIS on the season, if this lead holds up, and 2 on this 3 game road trip. Then he will get home and get absolutely booed out of the park by KC fans.

Not sure where the 12 ranks in the AL, but it would be enough to tie for the lead in the NL. (I saw a stat on TV yesterday about it)

We need to score soon

Mahay can pitch the 8th against the lefties, and I suppose Ram Ram is good for 2 innings, but after that it will be either Peralta or Tejeda. Soria can’t be available after already pitching 3 consecutive days.

Oakland has it’s good relievers relatively rested because of the 2 losses.

I think everyone knows that Guillen hates Aviles

Because Aviles is pure of heart and Guillen is the offspring of Satan.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

He Hit The

Ball when we needed him to; RBI’s!

We scored more runs than our opponent

I’ll take it.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Psssht.

Yeah, like THAT’S what baseball’s all about.

I like a more emotional approach

if we feel good about it, it is a win for us

Any thoughts on why the heck the As thought they had to pitch around Gordon

I mean, I’m a Gordon fan and all, but 5 walks? I wouldn’t be scared of JoGui, either (although he did come through today), but, geez, Gordon isn’t exactly tearing it up… 2 IBBs? Don’t the As know how silly that strategy is?

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

5 times???

I don't think it was 5 IBB's

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 30, 2008 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

He didn't pitch them to himself

I might add that

Teahen had an at-bat where he fouled off what, half a dozen pitches? Still struck out in the end, though.

by cmkeller on Jul 30, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

And if he hadn’t swung at some of the balls out of the strike zone, he would have drawn a walk. He would have done something which got him the walk. See, Chaim, getting a walk requires that the batter fail to swing at balls outside of the strike zone. Some can do it well and some cannot. It requires a skill from the batter.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 30, 2008 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know, I know we have to credit Gordon

I just seems weird, that’s all.

Aviles is freaking me out. As I joked last night, the hotter he gets, the more I think he’s just a fluke.

by Matt Klaassen on Jul 30, 2008 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

One player getting 5 walks in a game is definitely weird

It was a confluence of some wildness, some plate discipline and some strategy.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Gordon hammers lefites. Guillen doesn't hammer righties.

And they put the DP in order.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Now all we have to do...

is sweep a couple teams named after their sox and some team called the twins(?) and we’re right back in it.

Turn on ESPN

Steve Phillips is talking and I think Peter Gammons’ head is going to explode!

by Warden11 on Jul 30, 2008 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

While Phillips is a real idiot...

...I hate listening to Gammons around the trade deadline. Every year, he reports several different trades are “imminent” or “about to happen” or “just about official” that never happen.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 30, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Poor Peter

He’s so hooked into everyone that, honestly, they use him to spread disinformation. One of these days, he’s going to morph into the Iraqi Minister of Information.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Jul 30, 2008 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder if he actually thinks the things he's reporting are genuinely true

I’m going to give him credit for intelligence and say that the answer is no. He knows that they are just rumors and likely disinformation, but he reports them as fact because it makes for a juicier statement for him to say that a deal is just about done. And, of course, ESPN loves that kind of half-assed journalism. If it will pique the interest of the 16-24 yo demographic, then they want it on the air.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Mark Ellis

will become the Oakland A’s all-time leader in games played at 2B his next game.

All I can say to that is WOW.
