Rumor: Royals Have Offered Mahay to Red Sox
Supposed quasi deal is Mahay for Brandon Moss. The link is to SOSH, so make of that what you will.

I don't know much about Moss...mostly just his stats
I would say that he doesn’t look like a particularly high upside guy. More of a Teahen-type.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Much rather get someone like lowrie than moss... but whatever,
i dont think this is going to happen could though. I heard that the royals were looking at basically 2 prospects or a cornerstone player? i could be wrong here, maybe that was for guillen.

I would only trade Mahay this year
For a real prospect, and Moss doesn’t look like it. Mahay’s simply been too good this year to trade for nothing special. I’d gamble that he can stay as effective next year, and then turn him for something when there’s only two months left on his contract next year.
Sometimes you just gotta roll the potato.

I like Mahay a lot, but this has been an uncharacteristically good season for him
He’ll likely be a good reliever next year, but shouldn’t be expected to be nearly this good.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

We don't want Moss though...
I agree. Let’s sell high. He’s 37 and a leg or shoulder strain away from being done. I don’t know about Moss….
He’s 24, hits lefty, throws right. 6’0” 205. Hit .295 in 34 games for the Red Sox this year. .799 OPS. 6 BB, 25 Ks in 78 ABs. Those K numbers are HIGH. 47 Ks and 16 BBs in 163 ABs at Pawtucket. I think that’s too many K’s. 148 Ks and 61 BBs last year in 493 ABs at Pawtucket.
Even though he’s won all kinds of awards in the minors, I don’t think he’s the guy. Unless we can cut his K’s in half….. Can Burnett do that? Hasn’t with our players….

I don’t know what you guys though, but that Boston page sucked. It was hard to follow and you had to click next for the second page? We’ve got a way better gig going here. Very good job Royals Review!

isn't Sean McAdam the Sox beat writer for one of the local papers?

Yea
Just found it.
Still, I kinda doubt this. Seems more like a deal the Sox would propose rather than KC would propose.

Seem's kinda "meh" to me.
He strikes out by the bushel. Nice power and does take a walk. I think he’d be a slight upgrade over Teahen, but that isn’t even saying much at this point. Seems kinda like Costa to me…
Honestly I’d probably rather keep Mahay if this is all we could get.

+1
I realize that we won’t get the most exciting prospect in return for any reliever who lacks the “closer” tag, but Moss fails to inspire much excitement in me whatsoever.

Moss looks pretty good to me.
.287/.357/.461 minor league line in 681 games. In limited major league duty (49 games) he has kept almost that same line – .291/.348/.456.
Here is the verbage from the RedSox prospect blog 306 linked above:
Scouting Report: Athletic outfielder with a very strong arm. Excellent approach at the plate – good swing with a refined power and on base ability. Hits to all fields. Slightly above average speed for a right fielder. Solid in the field. Tough competitor. Fantastic teammate and individual who takes joy in playing the game. Moss possesses a good mental approach to the game, able to evaluate his mistakes while still not harping on them. Moss began a transition to becoming a part-time 1B in late 2007, and he’s handled it rather smoothly.MLB Comparison: Jay Gibbons
He will be under team control at MLB minimum for another two years, and then three years of arbitration. I don’t know if a few years of Moss is more valuable to the Royals than another year+ of Mahay, but Moss looks like a useful player.
As I do not see any strong reason to suspect Moss has untapped potential, the question at hand would seem to be is Moss better than Maier/Gathright/Costa/Lubanski? Tough call. Maier and Lubanski have more upside, but at this point Moss seems to be the safe bet.
If Teahen doesn’t get right soon the Royals may actually need to find two MLB qualty outfielders to complement DeJesus and Guillen next year. And I think the chances of Guillen being gone by 2009 are not insignificant.

Moss would likely be an upgrade at the 4th OFer spot
So yes, he is probably that useful. But is Mahay only worth an upgrade at 4th OFer?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

from Will Carroll
The Royals seem especially quiet. GM Dayton Moore has said he has nothing working, and I believe him despite rumors that include Jose Guillen, Ron Mahay, and even Zack Greinke.

Moss
From the stats, I see a consistently good but not great OBP and line drive power. Sounds very Teahenish.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Kyle Farnsworth was all choked up
I bet he cried on the way to Detroit.
Anyway, I suspect we’re either doing nothing, or we’re going to pull off a relative steal. If Dayton was actually desperate to unload anyone, I think we’d be hearing more scuttlebutt (like with Dotel last year, who was clearly excess and hadn’t contributed anything anyway). I think Dayton’s content to play his hand unless someone else gets desperate enough to overpay.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

if this rumor is true, i'm amazed that GMDM didn't at least start with a higher asking price
Moss is a C+ prospect on the Sickels scale. I don’t know if Mahay would fetch us a B- prospect, but I figure it is better to aim high and lower our price if need be.
Plus, if we’re looking for an MLB-ready outfielder, the BoSox probably aren’t the best trading partners. Moss is the only OF prospect who both makes the Sickels top-20 and is arguably MLB-ready (not counting Ellsbury).
As with the Donald rumor, I’d say pass—for the above reasons, and because, as others have already pointed out, Moss looks like the second coming of Mark Teahen stats-wise.

He may have started with a higher asking price
If this rumor is true, no one is saying that this is the first communication between the Sox and Royals on this subject. We shouldn’t take a rumor and then throw a bunch of assumptions on top of it. If the Royals have offered Mahay for Moss, this might have been the 6th offer that the teams have traded back and forth.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

seems like Mahay should have a tick more value
considering he’s also cheap for ‘09 too
who knows really… maybe Moore is personally high on Moss, maybe this is plan C, maybe its all a lie
by royalsreview on Jul 31, 2008 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he does have more value
And I doubt this rumor is true. But maybe it is true and maybe Moore really likes Moss. If so, then I think this is another piece of evidence that Moore isn’t good with position players. Unless of course Moss turns into a good regular. I think he’ll be more of a good 4th OFer.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Moore seems to love the second basemen and the 4th outfielders

Those are the kind of players you can bring in through trades when you don't have much to trade
I bet he also likes 1.000 OPS corner players. But you and I both know that he really hasn’t had the opportunity to acquire any of them, given the trading chips we have.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

If the rangers can get david murphy for eric gagne surely we can get someone that good
Yasuhiko Yabuta is to Major League Baseball as Drew Carey is to The Price is Right
by focs on Jul 31, 2008 1:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Gagne had a history of being a truly elite, dominant reliever. He also had the "closer" tag.
Both of those things push up a reliever’s trade value. And Mahay doesn’t have either of them.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Define "that good"
Murphy isn’t even a good starter…he’s hitting .266/.312/.453 playing half his games in a bandbox.

Look at all those smug Boston pricks.
“I am really not impressed with Mahay”
O RLY? A sub-2 ERA for a lefty isn’t impressive?

Wow, really?
I mean, Moss is a pretty good 4th outfielder/marginal starter type…but I’d much rather have Jason Donald from the Phils if that deal is still on the table.
