Trading Deadline Extravganza Overflow Thread

A little less sixteen candles, a little more 'touch me.'

It's overflow thread time, mainly because I spent about half-an-hour learning how to use the bizarre and useless 'sarcasm font.' In the hopes of contributing something today, let me follow up on Will's earlier points:

  • I've heard nothing about DDJ-to-the-Cubs rumors beyond the usual mlbtraderumors-level stuff. Here's hoping David sticks around, because we'd be taking a big step backward in CF if we lost him.
  • Ken Rosenthal is a dork. More importantly, he's often factually inaccurate. Trust at your own risk.
  • If Mahay can be traded for Jason Donald, then why would we go after Brandon Moss instead? Thoughts on this? If the Phillies are still in the fold, I'd go for their offer.
  • The White Sox DID do something after all, the merit of which is debatable.
  • Everybody loves Will Ohman. Therefore, everyone should love Ron Mahay. I can't wait until we get Matt Wieters for him.
  • Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez is a Yankee. He's a good band-aid for the wound of losing Posada, but then there's the fact that it's really annoying that some people insist on calling him "Pudge." Nicknaming Ivan Rodriguez "Pudge" was like nicknaming Jake Plummer "Jake the Snake"...I'm not buying it.
  • The Marlins-Pirates-Red Sox potential deal involving Manny Ramirez and Jason Bay and gosh knows who else is apparently close to dead, though the Jays are making noise too. Who knows why? Not me.
  • We now have two and a half hours until the "moment of truth."
  • Bud Selig is still a cretin, just in case anyone forgot that particular tidbit of information.
  • The movie "Doomsday" is stupid and can't hold a candle to any of the movies it rips off.

Party on.

The Phillies continue to target three left-handed relievers — the Braves’ Will Ohman, Pirates’ John Grabow and Giants’ Jack Taschner. The team also had been in the mix for the Royals’ Ron Mahay, but could not meet the Royals’ price.

An executive from one team in touch with the Royals says he does not believe that Mahay will be traded. The Royals have Mahay under contract next season for a salary of $4 million.

I'm interested to see how Griffey will be with WS this weekend

From what I am reading/hearing, Griffey goes to CF, Swisher to 1B and Pauly to the bench.

Griffey will have a big yard to cover in KC and he has had trouble in RF with the Reds. I’m sure the media coverage will be heavy this weekend.

Liked to see Royals win the series from White Sox. Tigers and Indians are just stripping their pitching staff with extra innings game then a day game. Still think KC can make it to 3rd place by end of summer.

If Griffey is playing the OF regularly...

...then what is the over/under on the date his knee (or other body part) blows out? I’m saying August 27.

"If Mahay can be traded for Donald..."
If Mahay can be traded for Jason Donald, then why would we go after Brandon Moss instead? Thoughts on this? If the Phillies are still in the fold, I’d go for their offer.

We have no idea if Donald-for-Mahay was ever on the table. For all we know, this was disinformation put out by one of the teams or another team. Or maybe it was an offer the Royals made and the Phillies said, “hell no.” We have no idea. We also don’t have any idea about the veracity of the Mahay-Moss rumor.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Last year, even Ross Gload hit 3rd for a while. Gordon has done well there nor has anyone else. Would love to see DeJesus there but then the lead off is open. Aviles at #2 hole is productive – leave him alone. Grud just has very little power – at least average is hihg. Another case of KC’s offense being so poor.

Don't think KC will make a move

If KC could flip Mahay for Donald – do it. For Moss – pass. Don’t see Brandon Moss as a difference maker – more product of Red Sox hype machine. Remember how the Dodgers use to do that in the 80’s – 90’s. Every prospect was a potential super star. This time of the season is the biggest tease. People throw names out without any substance. Remember last season when KC was going to trade Dotel for the Seattle OF or to the Dodgers for Hu. Then, find out that those names weren’t in the mix at all.

Mahay does a great job and it would take a good B prospect or higher to make the deal for me. We’ll see who is most likely to blink? KC doesn’t need to trade Mahay with his contract and desire to play in KC.

More I-Rod fun

At the risk of being labeled a Defender of Our National Innocence (as if JoGui needs my help) or a steroid witch-hunter, in honor of NHZ and my agreement that I-Rod has been overrated (although it’s a smart trade for the Yanks), here’s some fun stuff:

Ivan’s Offensive Winning Percentage, before Jose Canseco supposedly introduced him to PEDs: .366 (in 742 PA) from 1991 to 1992 (at which time Rodriguez reportedly weighed 165 pounds).

Ivan’s Offensive Winning Percentage, after Jose Canseco supposedly introduced him to PEDs: .560 (in 6,473 PA) from 1993 to 2004 (at which time Rodriguez reportedly weighed 215 pounds).

Ivan’s Offensive Winning Percentage, after after MLB came up with a PED policy that included suspensions: .428 (in 1,948 PA) from 2005 to today (at which time Rodriguez reportedly weighs 187 pounds).

The other is a small, no-power, contact-and-defense second-baseman of an unknown age, though if he is playing in the Jr Championships hes probably a teenager or very early 20s.

I believe the rule is that the ball must rise above the batter's shoulders

for a caught foul ball to count as an out.

As you may have heard, Alex Gordon became the first Royal ever to draw five walks in a game. I could point out that two of those walks were intentional, which means that twice the opposition intentionally walked Alex Gordon to face the guy who pinch-hit for him 10 days ago. I could also point out that Gordon’s the first major leaguer since Barry Bonds in 2004 to draw five walks in a game without scoring a single run. But let’s not spoil the moment.

a league average OF for Banny

is a pretty good flip but we won’t know what we’ve got for pitchers until 2010. Rosa’s really the only one who looks ready to make a move.

In what league would Melky Cabrera be a “league average OFer”? The Mexican League?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

It's too bad

you rarely see reports on the deals that weren’t made. I’d be interested in seeing what Moore passed up, if anything.

I think last year is more the norm than ‘06. Baseball is a game driven by failure and herd mentality and it looks like no one wants to risk looking foolish by giving up prospects for current performance.

Although in fairness, there was no way Boston could have known that Jeff Bagwell was going to destroy our national innocence.

I hope you understand that even if we were to have traded our easily tradable pieces (Olivo, Mahay, etc.)

...we wouldn’t have gotten much in return. And we’re not going to fix this team by trading away genuinely good players like DeJesus.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 31, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

DeJesus

is someone this team should be building around, not getting rid of.

The Royals would have been trading known mediocrities for unknown mediocrities. But it still would have been something to talk about on a day that the boys aren’t playing.

i understand, but

From Rotoworld:
According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox feel they can’t trade Brandon Moss for Ron Mahay because they need him as Manny Ramirez insurance.

The Royals are reportedly willing to make the deal straight up, but Moss might be Boston’s best option in left field if Manny bails on the club.

by KC Chris on Jul 31, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully

they’re just a couple of years ahead of the Royals.

We still have to see how Moore’s drafts work out but I remain optimistic long-term. I’m just impatient because I thought we’d be a little closer this year. Now that Teahen is sliding back into bust territory, Shealy isn’t the answer at first and Butler and Gordon are progressing more slowly than we’d have liked I’ll probably be looking at 2010-2012 as the window to compete.

One thing for sure- this franchise is going to have to draft pitching and power because they can’t afford it on the open market. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen much in the way of power drafted since 06.

. . . a weary nation turns to Gil Meche

by vegasroyals on Jul 31, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

that's mostly what I'm jealous of.

that they are farther along and I’m diappointed with the improvement so far. I am an ultra-optimist, so I was expecting really big things this year. Oh well. There’s always 2010-2012!!! Go Royals!

true

but you’ve got to draft quantity and quality. Too many picks flame out to pin your hopes on just Moose and Hosmer.
