Game 90 Open Thread - Royals (39-50) at Rays (55-32)
Kansas City Royals @ Tampa Bay Rays
Ninety games? That isn't fair! I can't believe so much of this season is already gone. We'll all be in the ground soon.

Anyone catch Rob Neyer on 810 this morning?
I caught the tail end of it. He was pretty down on our minor league system. Doesn’t see any hitters that will contribute.

That seems to be a pretty common sentiment from what I've heard from others.
Decent pitching depth through each level. Moustakas and nobody else for hitting.

Moustakas and nobody else for hitting
That’s not quite true. Dickerson and Kila count for something. But everyone agrees that there’s a lot of quality pitching depth in the minors and very little in the way of hitting.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Even among the pitchers
I’m not sure there is anyone there that would make a Top 100 Prospects list. Maybe Cortes. That’s not all that encouraging.
There’s depth in the sense that we’re not going to be signing Elartons and Mayses anymore because we’re developing serviceable major league pitchers, but there’s not depth like the Rays have where they seem to be loaded with future All-Stars.

Top 100 prospects
Cortes…and why not Rosa? And I know some scouts and analysts are in love with Blake Wood.
There’s depth in the sense that we’re not going to be signing Elartons and Mayses anymore because we’re developing serviceable major league pitchers, but there’s not depth like the Rays have where they seem to be loaded with future All-Stars.
There’s not a lot of MLB-ready depth, but the mix of Rosa, Cortes, Wood, Pimentel, Cegarra, Duffy, Gutierrez is high quality depth.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

This is a big one.
Through 90 games last year we were 39-51. If we lose today, we’ll have exactly the same record as last year’s team. Ah, but if we win… vindication.

The Rays hate stats
But, believe it or not, that’s not the hilarious part. No, the hilarious part is this: The villain they were trying to catch was someone named "Dr. Stat." No, really. It seems that Dr. Stat — and I’m quoting from the cartoon now — wants to "use his knowledge of useless statistics to destroy the game."
Yes, I’m completely serious here — I saw the thing twice. This Dr. Stat them appears on the Superfriends monitor, and he asks them who was the highest paid umpire in 1888. The Rays, of course, don’t know, and they make it clear to him that it is a stupid and pointless question. Dr. Stat then says, "Wrong answer," and he says as punishment he will point his stat ray direction at Tropicana Field in order to make it impossible for people to enjoy the games.

I was actually going to post something like this
He’s been bad the last two years (but he was hurt last year). Joe Maddon plays washed-up Cliff Floyd and other losers over him. At worst, he’d be an acceptble fourth outfielder as a RH platoon partner for Teahen and when Jose Guillen has a “rare” injury, and stuff. At best, he could be another Marcus Thames—a medium patience, lower contact, super-high power guy who just needs playing time to get his stroke.
Plus, he kicks ass in a fight.

From a Rays telecast (so that makes it what, fourth hand information?)
On Jose Guillen’s days in Tampa Bay:
For example, he once tried to sell his passport for high money, which I believe is probably a felony.
He also got caught with a corked bat in a AAA rehab game for the Durham Bulls.

He’s not a world-beater by any means, and rally sucked the first month of the season, but since then he’s been hitting all right. No place for him on the Royals (although they’re down to 3 second baseman with Callaspo out!), but he’s a decent player.

There's nothing better than...
...seeing a first-rate baserunner score from first on a single. Wow. Kudos to Teahan. – TL

My point is still valid
Only because it was a 3-2 pitch did he score.
Teahen still should not have been bunting for a hit in that situation.
Leading off the inning – OK – but not batting with 2 outs and nobody on.

Maybe Meche's arm will simply fall off today.
He will have to throw 130 pitches to get through 5 innings today.

with this strategy

Get thru 4, Gil
then Ram Ram for 2, Mahay for 2, and Soria for 1.
That’s how much we need a win today.

You'd think if you were as crappy a hitter as Pena
You’d really learn how to become the best bunter who ever lived.
