40-50
Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. The Royals avoid a sweep, Soria shows he's human and Aviles breaks out of his mini-slump. Good times.

Very nice victory.
Was very happy to see AVILES have a big game.

It's amazing how far and how fast his OPS fell
I hope he can keep out of the 0-fer doldrums.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

But we have to put up with slumps from young players. We’re familiar with that refrain. – TL

I haven't given up on him
I think his post-ASB stats will be most telling (and I’m talking about the entire post-ASB data set, not any hot or cold streaks that he might have).
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

That's right, we just need to be patient while Gload, TPJ, and Gathright work their way out of these "slumps!" (AKA career averages)

Let's not overlook the contributions of Pena and Gathright

Speed and defense up the middle.
They did their job valiantly.

they saved at least 10 runs...
it looked like, for a moment, we were moving past TPJ… now, i’m not so sure
Gathright continues to be a major playig-time vacuum as well

Ryan Lefebvre told me
That the benching that Pena got was just what he needed to clear his mind and focus on hitting once again. He should come around and be our shortstop for years to come. I mean, just look at his numbers compared to Frank White’s numbers through their first 250 games!

He hit 267 last year with plus plus defense. He should be a first ballot HOFER.
That BA is almost as high as his OPS this year.

Aviles slump was indeed
of the mini variety; however, that was all it took for Ryan and Splitt to start vehemently advocating for TPJ as the long term solution.
That bit of BS from Sunday’s telecast still blows my mind…

It was of the mini variety if today's hitting was the start of something, not just a blip in his regression

Despite avoiding the sweep, I'm...
...down that we’re behind the Rays in team development. We should be smoking them by now. The jury is still out on at least 80 percent of our “pieces.” – TL

Didn't we think we were likely 2 years from contention before the season started?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The flashes of progress...
...naturally cause one to lose patience with the official program. I mean, technically, we shouldn’t send any players down to work on things (i.e. Butler) because this season’s supposed to be one of players continuing to learn their roles. Some have learned faster (i.e. Soria), so we expect the same quicker curve for the rest.
In a word, it’s about expectations—-ours versus the players’ versus managements versus the national media’s.
by timlacy on Jul 7, 2008 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Expectations are the key
And this team could still finish with a win total in the high-70’s. That would be important progress that anyone should be happy with. Would it put us on the doorstep to contending in 2009? No, but I don’t think anyone should have expected the Royals to be in contention in 2009. Now, if the Royals end with a win total in the low-70’s, then there’d be good reason to be down on this team and its management.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by NYRoyal on Jul 7, 2008 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i suppose 2009 could be considered two seasons away
or one, depending on how you define it
i don’t see a 85 win team - fringes of contention - popping up next season, although i’d be happy to be wrong
by royalsreview on Jul 7, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think the Royals will be in contention in 2009
But I didn’t think it was likely they’d be in contention in 2009 before this season began. I don’t think most Royals fans did. They certainly shouldn’t have.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Also, it wouldn't be unprecedented for the
Royals to win 70 in ‘09, then hit it big and win 95 in ‘10…unlikely, but not unprecedented (Detroit ‘06, Rays ‘08?)
Nobody will celebrate harder when the Royals make the playoffs!!
by juano on Jul 7, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
95 in '10 kinda unlikely but I hope it happens
A real coup is going to have to happen to win 95 by ‘10. KC is gonna have to either fleece someone in a trade, Moose or someone else is gonna have to develop into a A-Rod/Pujols type stud or the Pitching would have to be ROCK SOLID all year long.
Obviously the Rock Solid pitching is the most likely scenario of those three. Zach would have to be a True #1, Meche, Banni, Hoch would have to all pitch in the #2/3 neighborhood, or Rosa/Cortes would have to be 2/3’s.
That would be awesome!!!
Billy at worst will be Sean Casey jr.

What I really don't get about
statements like these is this: EVERYONE is getting rocked by the Rays right now. Why exactly should we be comparing our team to theirs?
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on Jul 7, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why not
They have been in a redevelopment plan just as long as KC has.

Therefore, if one rebuilding team has the best record in baseball, so should the Royals
huh?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by NYRoyal on Jul 7, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a comparison
nothing more. They are full of young players KC is full of young players. They are on a similar small budget. Nice to compare where KC is in regards to a similar team.
Who cares about RBI's, how many HDB's you got?

If your point is that their rebuilding has gone better than ours, then you're right
But the standard for the Royals rebuilding isn’t whatever TB is doing. They should be judged on objective criteria, not by the standard of the team with the best record in baseball.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by NYRoyal on Jul 7, 2008 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To compare them to TB
isn’t that bad. To compare them to the way TB is playing right now might be off base but to compare them later in the year might not be that bad. Currently TB is playing WAY ABOVE their head and I expect them to come back down to earth somewhat. Not a Brewers-type collapse but a slight regression.
Who cares about RBI's, how many HDB's you got?
by kcscoliny on Jul 7, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let's look at it this way
If TB were currently 30-60, would their rebuilding failure make the Royals rebuilding process any more of a success? Again, my point is that the success or failure of the Royals rebuilding is not appropriately judged by comparing it to the rebuilding success of other organizations.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'm thoroughly convinced Soria got rocked today
Due to sitting for 4 days before getting used. He has been significantly less good after long layoffs.

I hate to say you have to be pleased with a 3-5 record
but that’s the reality of being a Royals fan these days. At the very least you can’t be terribly disappointed with that mark on a road trip considering who they played: a team that has flat “had their number” the past few years and arguably the best team in baseball. If they can just build on it and get back a few games before the ASB.
Nobody will celebrate harder when the Royals make the playoffs!!

We went 3-5 on the road
against the best team in the American League and a team that’s been treating us to the baseball equivalent of prison sex for ages.
I mean, if we’d gone 4-4, it’d be an unqualified success.
Being pleased with this road trip has nothing to do with “the reality of being a Royals fan.” It has to do with “reality.”

Yeah. Right.
