Your WPA game MVPs are Gordon, German and Aviles. Butler's GIDP bunt lowered the team's chances of winning from 71.6% to 53.7%.

grrr..

that sucked in new and entirely fascinating ways

by powderbluepower on Jul 9, 2008 12:35 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

WHY TREY!

you do realize he would look like a genious if billy got a good bunt down because gload got a hit which would have won the game

Yasuhiko Yabuta is to Major League Baseball as Drew Carey is to The Price is Right

by focs on Jul 9, 2008 12:37 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why the hell do you bunt with billy?

why does that seem like a good idea?

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Jul 9, 2008 12:38 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

YOU DON'T KNOW THAT!

Use your brain – Guillen most likely would have walked Gload had the bunt succeeded, thereby setting up the DP and allowing his reliever to face two righties instead of a lefty and a righty.

DDJ > Hunter (at least this year)

Career OPS +:

DDJ: 105
Toriiii: 104

Yeah, I know defense, grit, blah blah blah. Still, pretty dang interesting given the press Hunter gets. When is that dude going finally going to make the “All-Overrated” team?

Game 91, AKA The Trey and Umpire Funhouse

Complaints, in order of appearance
1. Shrinking strike-zone in innings 7-9 which tended to favor Sox, especially Quintin
2. Defensive replacement taking Jose Guillen out of the game, placing Gathright in RBI-spot
3. Blown check-swing call by 1b Umpire and HP Umpire yelling at Horacio Ramirez for understandably having a negative reaction
4. Blown obstruction call by 2b Umpire, gives White Sox extra out and extra baserunner
5. 2-Run SAC fly…someone just call the fly ball and take it
6. Trey bunts with Billy Butler batting with no-one on and Teahen on 1b, results in double play

Positives?
1. Davies ‘battled’
2. TPJ did not start or receive an at-bat
3. Mike Aviles had 4-hits
4. Gordon was clutch w/ a game-tying double

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

on #2 -

it sure looked like a good move when David made that catch on the line-drive, but I understand where you are coming from. As I thought about it later, I still don’t get why he ran Hiram out there in the 6th. His pitch count was high, he was getting hit, what was the reason for putting him out there? Comments were made about this at the time.

by buddyball on Jul 9, 2008 9:03 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, the complaint about defensive replacements is all hindsight

When it doesn’t work, it draws complaints, but it was the right thing to do in the situation. If Guillen hadn’t been replaced and he failed to make a key catch, that would have drawn complaints.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

So the time has come to ask: Why is TPJ still on the roster?

I understand the great defense, but can the Royals really carry one of the their 13 position players who is so bad with the bat that they’d rather use a crippled Mark Grudzielanek in his place when only a sac fly is needed?

Trey Hillman

is a pud. The guy is totally weak. Every other manager in the majors is up in the umps face after that crap interference at second. This guys apologies after the game were sorry. He sounds like a child caught stealing.

“I guess in hindsight it wasn’t a good idea to have Butler bunt.” “Oh Mr. Umpire are you sure Ramirez checked his swing and it sure looks like their strikezone is a bit smaller than ours.” “Sir I think that could’ve been runner interference, oh you disagree ok sir thank you, sorry for the misunderstanding.”

Trey needs to quit managing like he is Tony “The Brain” LaRussa get a sac and get ran.

Who cares about RBI's, how many HDB's you got?

by kcscoliny on Jul 9, 2008 10:30 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I haven't been this upset about a Royals game in awhile

I guess I’ve been getting numb.

The umpiring was brutal. I’m not one to complain about umpiring, but that was terrible last night. The obstruction was obvious. The home plate strike zone was all over the place. The umpire was ridiculous on Alex Gordon in the 11th with two pitches well outside the strike zone. It looked like he just wanted to get out of there.

The bunt was ridiculous. Seriously, bunting with Billy Butler? Did Trey think Billy had suddenly gotten fast or had become a good bunter? I understand Billy hasn’t been on fire since coming back, but give him a chance to succeed. Maybe a game winning hit is what he needs to spark a tear. Instead, you’re asking him to do something he’s terrible at that doesn’t fit his strengths. Not to mention, bunting is stupid.

Roster management. We just didn’t have many options once Trey went with his defensive lineup late in the game. I’m all for playing for defense when you’re up 5-3. I’m just frustrated that when Joey is in the game, the only guy we have to pinch hit for him is John F. Buck. Its really time we brought a fifth outfielder onto the roster, particularly when our 4th outfielder hits like my sister. Having 12 pitchers is a silly luxury. Bring up Costa or Maier, neither may be great, but they provide more depth and greater options late in the game.

Ugh, I can’t believe I stayed up til 11:30 watching that.

I didn't get to watch...

...the game, but based on your comments and those above, this looks like the hierarchy of complaints:

1. Umpiring. A coach, in my mind, should take risks here to alter the flow. I love Hillman, but he better realize that he’s got to be a bit more aggressive here.

2. Roster management. Having guys like TPJ and Gathraight on the bench isn’t helping us. We need the roster to be strong top to bottom, and that’s Dayton’s issue.

3. The Bunt. Well, I can’t fault attempts at surprise. Was the attempt called from the bench, or did Butler do it on his own? Is he a good bunter? I’d be surprised if he is.

...Just thinking out loud.

about the bunt

it was most likely called from the bench.. I don’t see billy not wanting to swing away there. And billy only has 2 sac bunts in his career in the bigs. It would of worked had it not been a bad bunt.
