Why "Vote Jose for All-Star"?

Anyone else stop to think how ridiculous it is that the Royals are touting Jose Giullen as their candidate for the All-Star game? He's playing only marginally better (if that) than David DeJesus. Meanwhile, David is a home-grown talent, model citizen and is probably the primary reason why we even happen to notice that Guillen has all these RBIs (someone has to be on for you hit 'em in).

Oh, and he's done it without a)calling his teammates babies b)saying f&% you to the fans c)assaulting a coach d)getting the largest free agent contract in Royals history.

Does this team really think that paying a guy a whole bunch of money automatically makes him a "leader"? Do they really think an All-Star campaign is going to overcome all the other non-leader-ly aspects of his persona?

Um

They’re touting Guillen because he’s up for the internet fan vote, while DeJesus is not. That’s not the Royals fault.

Big Guy, shouldn’t the Royals be touting the guy who is actually on the ballot?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

What else would they do ask for a DDJ write in vote?

Who cares about RBI's, how many HDB's you got?

They could boycott the process as unfair and urge that no one vote at all

They could start an insurrection against the Office of the Commissioner which would end in a (hopefully) bloodless coup.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

+1 on DDJ being a better all-star candidate

Easily the best hitter on the Royals so far this year, and a better hitter than a lot of more highly touted CFs (Toriiiii, B. J. Upton).

How do they decide who is up for the fan vote?

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

I'm not sure who selects them, but it isn't the KC Royals

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

At least it isn't Ryan Lefebvre

Thanks! I’ll be here all week!

DDJ quietly having a great season.

His 845 OPS would rank as the #5 in the top 5 royal seasons in the last 5 years.

1. 2006 Esteban German 880 (Este with the best season. WoW!)
2. 2006 Mark Teahen 874
3. 2005 Mike Sweeney 864
4. 2004 Mike Sweeney 851
5. 2008 DeJesus 845

I heard a broadcaster say

that the manager of the all-star team picks the final five. And I’ve never heard an announcer say anything wrong before, so I’d call that pretty definitive.

Royals, NBA, Golden Hurricane, Hawkeyes, Chiefs, and KU basketball, in that order.

The Royals should tout tim, as he's up for the vote

I just can’t bring myself to vote for him, after years of lambasting Yankee and Red Sox fans for voting in their undeserving players.

by Top Ramen on Jul 9, 2008 5:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The All-Star game is a tribute to undeserving players

The ASG has nothing to do with who actually deserves it. It’s a really half-assed popularity contest, followed by a pretty crappy exhibition game.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The All-Star Game

is the boring epilogue to the Home-Run Derby and the Celebrities and Legends Softball Game (which itself is the only real entertainment of All-Star Week).

Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

I think they should let a couple lucky fans play in the ASG

Perhaps a couple kids from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It makes about as much sense as the current process. At least it would do some good.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'm pretty sure Tony Pena, Jr.'s major league run was a gift from the Make-a-Wish Foundation

He’s living on borrowed time with a terminal case of canthititis.

TPJ hyperbole is just too easy

I prefer Gload hyperbole.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jul 9, 2008 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they should promote Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman

to the “real” All-Star Game.

And mike them throughout. And leave the mikes open.

Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Jul 9, 2008 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jimmy pitches and Sarah catches

The game is a farce, so let’s completely sell out to the fact that it is a farce and maximize the entertainment aspect of the event.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jul 9, 2008 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

they have to be on different teams. Trust me, it’s better for all concerned.

Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

Not to mention lousy broadcasters

My rule of thumb: If Joe Buck is broadcasting it, I’m not watching it.

by jbrocato on Jul 13, 2008 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, shoot...

Guillen probably doesn’t deserve it and DeJesus probably does, but it is what it is. The Royals didn’t get to choose their “Final Five” representative, but come on.

I think people are taking the fact that the All-Star game isn’t what they think it ought to be way too personally. Enough with the cynicism! I think it could be better too, but have some fun.

Guillen is the Royals guy in the voting, and we love the Royals, therefore Guillen should go. Not the most logical arguement for him, but lighten up. It’s a game :)

by Bornin85 on Jul 9, 2008 7:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You are all right, of course.

My bad for not taking the time to understand an extremely flawed process.

I know I’ll have a hard time going out of my way to vote for Jose, and I’m guessing many Royals fans will as well. I doubt we’d put up much of a fight against Giambi anyway, but I doubt we’ll even make it interesting. I can even see more Royals fans voting for Jermaine Dye than Guillen.

by Big Guy on Jul 10, 2008 9:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not voting for him

I wanted DDJ or Greinke on the final ballot. Boo stupid process.

Greinke got screwed

Soria’s great and all, but…

Oh, wait, I forgot how much more closers are worth than starters.

Greinke got screwed

DDJ got screwed. Mauer got screwed. Markakis got screwed. Brian Roberts got majorly screwed. Mike Napoli was robbed.

Welcome to the All-Star game.

I’m talking about Royals who got screwed.

Don’t even get me started on Huber not even making the Final Vote ballot.
