Who cares about RBI's, how many HDB's you got?

I'm not in first, but I'm

improving!

Hm… that sounds familiar….

He just needs to learn how to do the little things better

and execute on the fundamentals, and then he’ll be able to be first on a regular basis.

Well

I am on a slow, 7 semesters of 9 hours each night classes to get my MBA…. so since I am about 3 semesters in, is that like Aviles becoming my starter instead of TPJ, or am I farther ahead?

Seems like when the wheels fall off for Banny, they stay off. But tonight, he came back with a 1-2-3.

I don't think that was the wheels falling off like we usually see

I think he just made a conscious decision to groove one to Quentin over walking him.

Eh, throw a strike to Quentin and let him put it in play

Where the worse possible result is 2 runs, or walk him and set up the big inning? Even if you groove a pitch, the majority of the time an out is going to be made.

There is definitely difference between aiming for the corner and trying to throw a strike.

That was a nasty sequence...

1) 93 MPH heater at the knees to open up the AB with a strike
2) 94 MPH heater just below the knees as a chase pitch
3) 96 MPH pitch blown right by AJ. It was clear he put a little something extra on it.
4) Sick 82 MPH curve on the inside of the plate; just a beautiful pitch

I really think we have something here with Tejeda. I think he replaces RamRam, who replaces Nunez, who replaces Soria once Soria moves to the rotation, whenever that happens.

by rockchalk on Jul 9, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nobody has questioned his stuff, just his ability to throw strikes

I don’t think ram ram ever becomes a closer, I think he’s going to give up too many walks. Nunez maybe, but does he really have a legit strike out pitch? Eh.

winning records follow good bullpens

by slayor on Jul 9, 2008 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know.

But from what I have seen so far, Tejeda seems to have been able to throw enough strikes to get by in the bullpen.

Before this season, he was never really tried out much in the pen, and his results at the beginning of this season were fairly promising.

As far as RamRam and Nunez go, I think both could be passable closers. Neither as good as Soria, sure, but good enough to make moving Soria to the rotation a net gain that isn’t up to much debate.

He needs to keep the walks down

Hitters are only hitting something like .180 against him, but he gives up too many walks. If he can reign in that control, though, then yeah, that’s a great resource and makes us a lot more flexible…especially after back-to-back extra innings games.

Both are mostly filler. Although I still think Gobble could be an effective LOOGY (and basically is, although he is rarely used as such), both should be completely tradeable.

but keep in mind, we’re really looking for a ground ball/not a HR at this point. Gobble’s only effective against lefties, Peralta gives up HRs all the time, but RamRam generally keeps the ball down in the zone.

we have Soria, Mahay, Ramirez and Nunez when he's healthy

Which is pretty good… unfortunately everybody is pitching like shit because the starting rotation has been getting shelled and we’ve been playing extra inning games

I was wondering the same thing, actually.

I think what really hurts us, besides not having Nunez healthy, is that we had back-to-back extra innings games. Chicago went to extras last night with us, but they were off the day before, so their pen has had an extra day of rest that ours didn’t get.

The funny thing is that going into the season, the prevailing thought was . . .

“At least our bullpen is good, so we won’t blow any leads.”

Well that’s gone right out the window hasn’t it?

Here's a reflection of the state of the Royals right now:

Guys on the Royals I am satisfied with:

DDJ

Aviles as a 2B

Buck, perhaps

Greinke

Soria

Mahay

Meche

That’s it. Everyone else is to some extent a disappointment, and for most of them I doubt they’ll be around when the team contends. This last losing streak really bites me. Gordon and Butler are beginning to remind me of Teahen, which makes me doubt the ability of our farm system to develop hitters. And yes, I know I might be overly pessimistic, but I just don’t see the building blocks of a contending team around here. Just spare parts.

by Eppenweb on Jul 9, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lost 9 out of our last 12 now?

Even Greinke is underachieving IMO. He’s been good, but not great – and he needs to be great. Same for Meche, he’s regressed a bit reecently and it’s troubling.

by slayor on Jul 9, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To me Meche has been okay recently for an above-average starter.

He was bad earlier in the year, but he has improved the last couple of weeks. For Greinke, I’m not sure whether he really is a #1 yet, so I am not sure about my expectations. Until I figure out where I expect him, I’m not going to get too down on him.

As opposed to someone like Gordon, who we picked in the same draft that Longoria was picked. It burns to see him struggle to hit so much and to see Evan light up the majors.

If anyone will let us win this game...

it’s Dotel. There’s some good irony in that.

Of course, there’s probably a lot more irony in him striking out the side, so that’s probably going to happen.

I am not blaming the umpires. I am saying that after the events of the last two games, we are not going to catch a single break from them from this point forward.

yeah...the umps in baltimore were just fucking awful....

the call on davey was bad….but the balk was legit…the umps had nothing to do with banny throwing the same cockshit slider to quentin twice…we lost the last two games…we didnt really get beat…the umps didnt beat us….

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Jul 10, 2008 3:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That ump with the fuckin ugly mustache...

Is a joke.

After the whole Baltimore scandal, this is probably teh worst umping I’ve seen in a long time.

Combining a terribly exhausted bullpen with a pitiful disgraceful excuse of an umpiring crew and some Ozzie Magic and there you have it, two W’s stolen right away from us.

by rockchalk on Jul 9, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

bannister gave this game away

the call on davey was terrible, but what else did they do? Ramon balked. His fault.

I was more talking about last night RE: the umpiring...

I’m just pissed off.

That was wild hyperbole, it was just in-the-moment stuff.

Still, last night’s calls were pretty brutal, and a couple of the strike calls tonight were horrible. But you are right, this loss lies squarely on Banny and our bullpen.

I hope Dayton Moore is disgusted. I know I am.

by Eppenweb on Jul 9, 2008 11:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If we finish 12 under .500

wouldn’t that be a 75 win season? That’s not that bad, right about in line with what most were probably thinking back in the spring training…of course, to get there, that means playing .500 ball the rest of the way out…so nevermind.
