Game 118 Open Thread - Twins (65-51) at Royals (53-64)
Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals, Aug 10, 2008 2:10 PM EDT
Anti-Sweeeeeeeeeep!
"Do it for Ho-Ram," I say quietly to myself, wiping the first tear from my eye. "Do it for Ho-Ram boys, it's what he would have wanted."
Your pitching tussle is Scott Baker (3.86 ERA) versus The Epic (4.17 ERA).

How will we deal with the loss of H. Ramirez?
And why didn’t we get a power hitting prospect???????????????

As bad as the HR/AB rate of his acquirees has been, I'm still more coabout DMGM's ageing rate
at this rate, by the time the Royals are ready to contend he’ll be in a nursing home. And, no, this isn’t a comment on his program.
Compare:

Now I’m just impressed that Allard survied.

Do you know what round Pujols was drafted in?
Every MLB team passed on him multiple times. Every team made that mistake. But really, you should market yourself as the power hitting scout that the Royals desperately need. You never would have missed Pujols.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by NYRoyal on Aug 10, 2008 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
13th round
I understand that every team passed on him but only two play in the same state. The other organization that we all hate drafted him I would be interesting to see where KC had him on the draft board. You are freakin idiot by the way whose constant drawl about how this organizatio never makes mistakes grows extremely old. I think St Louis should put you as head of their minor league development. That way Pujols would’ve been called up by about 2004 don’t wanna rush him you know.
Your constant questioning of every one on here gets WAY OLD.

They did miss on him I was only reacting to this comment
we give up HoRam and get back Pujols and Holiday.I know everyone missed on him but it is a bigger whiff when he plays in the same local area. I just find it funny that people mock others on here when KC should be mocked for not taking the local guy in the first place.

I reject the notion that a team should always know how good the guys in their local area will turn out to be
I think if every organization in baseball watched Pujols at that prep school in every game he played, they still wouldn’t have drafted him in the first 10 rounds. No one saw this coming. I don’t think more and better scouting of him would have seen it coming. They missed. Everyone missed. And, of course, those scouts are not the same scouts that are currently in the organization for the most part. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then, and a lot of personnel changes. But the Royals front office completely sucks so they do everything wrong. I get it.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

There goes your shot to DH in Burlington!
what is scout “turnover” like? Anyone? When DMGM came in, did the actual scouts change significantly? What is typical? I assume the Ricciardi thing (when he came into Toronto, he fired a lot of scouts as part of a housecleaning that was applauded by sabremetric-types at the time, if I remember rightly) is not the norm.

I question the FO judgement on a lot of things
But when I disagree with someone, I’m going to share my opinion.
The past FO made so many blunders for so long that the fans in here are justified by the judgement of the new crew.
That is such an odd statement. The “new crew” should be evaluated based on what they have done and haven’t done (which is a very mixed record). What past FO personnel have done should have no bearing on evaluating the current FO. It does have a bearing on the mental/emotional state of some Royals fans who react out of frustration, not sound analysis. It sounds like you’re saying that since past FO’s have been bad, then it’s ok to assume this one is screwing up all the time too.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I guess the question is "who else?"
Not to beat it into the ground (especially with ALL CAPS), but ALEX GORDON IS THE BEST HITTER AGAINST RIGHTIES IN THAT LINEUP, WHY IS HE HITTING 6TH? Even second would be better than that. He’s OBPing .380 against righties and he’s hitting behind Guillen and Butler, who are OBPing less than .300 against them (Guillen is under .300 OBP overall)?

Hitting the best guy at the top isn't so bad, though
especially when he has a decent OBP like DDJ
(Aviles, on the other hand, is more of a slugger than a on-base guy, as we’ll all discover once the singles stop falling at the current miraculous rate—not putting him down, I just don’t think he’s going to keep hitting over .320)

I don’t understand why we continue to overuse curves to LH batters from our RHPs. Let’s utilize the 2-seam and the change more. Against the RH batters let’s use the curve/slider type of pitch. We’re overshowing curves to LH hitters. It should be a surprise pitch. Let’s use the cutter inside to the LH and the 2 seam away. Then change away as well.

Guys I want to apologize
5 days ago I posted on a Chiefs forum, and on my poker forum, that I thought the Royals were turning things around, and I could start to see the nucleus of a good team.
I immediately realized my mistake and tried to apologize to the gods. But to no avail.
Cue 4, now sure to be 5 game losing streak. I made a bet two games ago for even money that the Royals would lose 4 or 5 of their next 5. Just to try to reverse jinx it. But sadly I think I’m a lock to win that bet now.
I also went to see the Royals in Anaheim for game one of the 7-game losing skid this summer. In 2003 I got direct ticket the day that magical season started to crumble.
In 2004 I got direct ticket when they were 4-2.
I will kill myself now, for the good of my beloved Royals.

meche's strategy that inning
was to not allow mauer or morneau the satisfaction of getting hits . . .
much like blocking a shot on its way down – goaltending – opposing team gets the points – but the player doesn’t get the psychological satisfaction of scoring . . . . thus negating the “heating-up” factor.

bannister will give up 5 walks and 5 runs in 5 nnings
hochevar will give up 10 hits and the usual 5 runs in 6 innings

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
by philofthenorth on Aug 10, 2008 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is where you're wrong.
I’ve heard many interviews with him talk about how since Spring Training, he has been trying to beat it into the team how important OBP is and getting “quality at bats”. He said that he has beat the issue into the ground so much that he feels like he doesn’t know if the team is even listening to him anymore. This mythical “Treyball” that everyone talks about has no merit because no one here knows what he really preaches, we can only take what he says he tries to get the team to do. Just because the team doesn’t work the count and get walks, doesn’t mean Hillman isn’t trying to get them to.
by I need more Esteban on Aug 10, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then why has OBP gone down this year?
while BA and SLG are up?
Trey also talks about fundamentals, but this team has fucked up so many simple outs that it’s ridiculous.
by BHWick on Aug 10, 2008 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because the guys with the bats in their hands
aren’t being patient, aren’t trying to draw walks. It’s real simple, Hillman tries to teach/preach being patient and drawing walks….the team doesn’t listen/doesn’t perform it = low OBP.
Because our players have fucked up the fundamentals, you think that he isn’t trying to get them to stress that? If and when this team ever contends, it will be because of players, not any manager. Then, you and a lot of other people who think a manager is so important will see what they really do for you. Not much when it comes to winning and losing.

KC is hard to figure out. I don't know if this season is real progress or failure hidden by
a few lucky wins. KC has the worst run differential in the AL (yes below Seattle) yet they don’t have the worst record in the AL. Look around the AL are they the worst team in it currently?
