Beat. The. Yankees. This weekend. While they're down. PLEASE.

Starting tonight the Royals say goodbye to Yankee Stadium, and have a chance to say good riddance to that place with at least 2 out of 3 there, and make the Yanks very miserable (and miss the playoffs for the first time since '93). Don't you just love it when the Royals beat the Yankees? Remember 1980, when the Royals swept the Yankees? Remember when George Brett took Goose Gossage deep for a huge home run to win the American League pennant at Yankee Stadium? Remember the Pine Tar Game, where George was angry after Billy Martin said he was using  too much pine tar and #5 got angry... then MLB said to play on, and Kansas City won? That was from '83. And, remember when Brett hit 3 homers in the '78 playoffs and Bo Jackson hit 3 out in '90? They both did it at Yankee Stadium. So, let's rub salt in the wound of a struggling Yankees team going nowhere by at least taking 2 out of 3 from the Yankees, and say goodbye to the House that Ruth Built. It's been 14 years since KC last won a series at Yankee Stadium, and the time is now to break through and put a dagger to the Yankees' postseason plans. Go Royals, beat Yankees. Please.

We've got Greike and Meche going this series

I like our chances.

The White Sox series was a waste of decent pitching by our lesser starters, though. If we can’t score, having our best pitchers on the mound won’t help much.

We could win the season series against them too

because we are currently ahead, 4-3.

Alas, the national media would portray that as more of an indictment of the Yankees this season than progress by the Royals : )

Would they be wrong?

In his first series as manager of the Royals in 2005, Buddy Bell’s squad swept the Yankees. Surely that didn’t say anything about the quality of the 2005 Royals or Buddy’s managing ability.

Yes, they would be wrong.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The more important question is

Are Derek Jeter and A-Rod still friends? I demand SportsCenter devote the first ten minutes of their program to investigate this.

Wow, that seems like a century ago

but it was only last year.

Even the A-Rod divorce seems played own. I guess since the re-signing and NY Fans “settling” for A-Rod (any, strangely, everyone sort of being smart and letting go of the “clutch” BS), he just isn’t that interesting.

Yankee fans haven't let go of the clutch BS

They don’t hate A-Rod like they once did (they really hated him for being un-clutch in the second season with the Yankees when he won the MVP), but they still don’t like that he’s not clutch and sometimes when he K’s in a clutch situation, you’ll hear some boos. Really.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Jeter's having a really down year

Is he starting to hear it?

Never

I’ve never heard anything negative from Yankee fans about him. I’ve never heard any boos or complaints. He’s so loved, that he’s one of these players where the fans are going to get pissed off if he’s not in the starting lineup everyday when he’s 40 with an OPS of .625 He makes everybody around him better!

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I remember

a few years back, 2002 or 2003, maybe? Maybe even 2004, when he had a terrible streak at one point (probably 2004, now that I think about it). He did hear it then for a few games. Nothing like A-Rod, though.

Bo Jackson

Didn’t he dislocate his should diving for a flyball in that game? Damn you Yankee Stadium!!!

by Slim Intoxicado on Aug 15, 2008 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

Can you dislocate a should?

Obviously I meant “shoulder”. And yes, he did. He homered in 3 straight at bats, got hurt, then homered in his first AB back on Aug 26.

NY, are you going to any of the games?

I hear tickets are near impossible to get now, with the end of the Stadium fast approaching.

by loyal2sdad on Aug 15, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know if I'll be able to

Still waiting to hear from my ticket connection. Things are getting more difficult now.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I hope The Epic brings his A-game tonight.

The Royals haven’t beaten Petitte in this millenium.

We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.

Lefty on the mound for the Yanks?

Guillen and/or Butler will homer tonight.

Gordon will have at least 1 K.

Headed to Yankee Stadium in a couple hours!

Wearing my ancient Royals hat and ready to lose my voice.

Can’t wait to finally see The Epic in person.

I fully expect to see three copies of him

side by side, looking grim, like when RR posts them at the top of game threads.

They scored

10 runs off Pettitte earlier this year. Guillen with the big game (2 hrs and 7 rbis, I believe?)

If I wanted to be negative, I’d point out that they somehow managed to lose that game.

Oops!

Interesting personal story on that earlier game

I was in Albuquerque at the time for the USBC National Bowling Tournament. Not doing much at the time, so we were all sitting around the hotel room, watching ESPN, me watching the scroll for the scoring updates. Needless to say, I was mentally exhausted by the time we blew that one. Also had to endure a lot of good-natured ribbing from my bowling friends, who are all Cardinal fans.

That game was a flashback to the famous 3 HR Bo Jackson game. Bo ALSO had 7 RBIS in that game, and he ALSO had to leave the game early due to an injury.

Alas, JERRY FREAKIN GROTE remains in the Royals recordbooks as one of many Royals to have 7 RBIs in one game. I’ve been waiting for somebody to get 8 for a quarter of a century, beginning to think that will still be there when I’m dead. (along with the 36 HR single season “record” by Steve Balboni).

Just want to tell all of Royals Nation that KC won last night,

and they are now 5-3 against New York in ’08. If we win one or both games this weekend we will:
1. Beat New York head-to-head for the 1st time since ’99
and
2. Win a season series at Yankee Stadium since ’94.

Right now, it’s tied at 2-2. Hope Rivera does a repeat performance of last night, and Soria this time finishes of the NYY 1-2-3.
Go Royals, beat Yankees.
Go Irish, beat San Diego State in 3 weeks.
