Game 123 Overflow Thread

Our beloved Royals and the big market oppressor known as the Yankees are tied 2-2 and headed for extra innings. Zack pitched great, Gordon homered, and we fielded like a minor b little league team on valium in the 7th. And I missed it. Hooray.

DId you guys see the comment on JoPo's recent blog?

the commentator said something like “the only guys on this team who are stars are Aviles and Guillen.”

Mellinger’s work is done… a 90 OPS+ (before today!) corner OF is a “star.”

by NHZ on Aug 16, 2008 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw that.

I’m surprised someone with the intelligence to read JoePo’s blog (let alone access the Internet in the first place) still believes that Guillen is a star.

All you need to be a star is to have dumbasses know your name.

by minda33 on Aug 16, 2008 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

The Mellinger thing is what gets me

I don’t live in the KC area, but everything I’ve heard about him is that he’s a good reporter, into stats, etc. (Has Rany’s seal of approval.) But he always sticks up for Guillen.

It seems like some people are clinging

to Guillen’s ridiculous hot streak as evidence that he’s been “better than the numbers indicate.” Well okay, but he also killed the team for pretty much of April. These things even out.

I mean, they’re both great players, probably overrated for certain performances, but both are legitimately great at what they do/did. But whereas Rivera (who’s not perfect, I know) doesn’t talk much (despite being fluent in English) manages to cultivate an aura of respect from teammates, opponents, and the press, while not giving a crap what people think (Cf. his 2005 first game at Fenway — good times) Schilling wants to be liked to bad he’s annoying as hell.

from Jeff Passan's article on yahoo:

"Previously they had penciled in a few names, like longtime minor leaguers Terry Tiffee and Jason Smith, who can play utility roles. Johnson needs such players to offset Watson’s decision to bring 12 pitchers among the 24 players, something he promised team executives who were worried about arms getting abused.

USA Baseball will announce the roster Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET and the team will have only four exhibition games against Canada together before it takes off Aug. 4 for Beijing."

Completely and utterly idiotic that Smith didn’t pinch hit for TPJ (minor upgrade) or Butler not pinch hitting for Ichi-Gload (massive upgrade).

Stupid Trey.

by JobDDT on Aug 16, 2008 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, my God

Butler was still on the bench?

We don’t have margin for error for piss-poor management. Not with this payroll. Not with this organization. I’m so disgusted with an otherwise hopeful team being mismanaged into crappy records. I seriously, seriously hope Trey Hillman learned a lesson from this game, because he will probably be managing here for at least three years. Most managers get inevitably fired because of moves like these, and moves like not bringing in Soria.

It’s only one game – but to use a cliche, every win counts. We would be that much closer to landing Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell this offseason, actually garnering attention on ESPN, or getting dramatic payroll AND attendance increases if moves like these are properly made. I’m so sick of being dragged down by inept managers (Hillman, Muser, Pena, Boone, Bell). Screw this team.

….painfully obvious. This isn’t me – an Internet writer – being ignorant. This isn’t us message boarders and quote-unquote “non-Insiders” being ignorant. This is truth. This is reality. I'm actually missing Buddy Bell right now

I think he was – all things considered – a better manager than Hillman. Much weaker on the veterans vs. prospects/youngsters, but much stronger in handling the bullpen. He also oversaw much better fundamental teams (2007 and 2006), for what it’s worth.

by Royals Nation on Aug 16, 2008 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Right or wrong

Moore will stick with “his guy” for at least one more year. Who knows why Butler sat. Maybe he hurt something. I dunno. Maybe Hillman will get better. As long as he’s better with the players, that’s fine for this year, and probably next.

He’s frustrating to me, too, though. If this stuff keeps up through all next year and the Royals are winning enough that it might matter in 2010, then it will be more crucial.

Not that he’s a great manager (at this point, clearly not), but Joe Torre did similar things and worse during his time with the Yankees when they were the class of the AL. Not sure what that means, but just that a lot of managers do dumb stuff. Until DMGM makes Pimpbot 5000, Baseball Prospectus Edition™, an offer, things probably won’t get much better on this front.

What’s HIllman’s contract.

Absolutely MORONIC MOVE by Hillman

….not bringing in Soria for this game. We lose this game….because of Trey Hillman. That’s at least eight games this season that I’ve pegged on this manager.

Someone defend this move. Please.

According to the FSN graphic,

Mahay and Nunie were unavalible to pitch. When they showed who was left in the bullpen for the Royals they showed Fatty and Soria, and maybe someone else, but it wasn’t Nunie or Mahay.

It's a risk that is so obviously worth taking

We either go with Soria for a second inning (he should be on a 40-45 pitch limit), or simply go with Newman or Fulchino and hope the Yankees don’t tie the game. Even then, it would be two runs to give up for a Yankee game-winner instead of one.

I don't think anyone's seroiusly defending Hillman

But, but...

He brought a hammer and nails to his first job with the Rangers and remodeled their facilities himself! He is a great guy!

It was in the June 1, 2008 edition of the KC Star

a Sunday issue, the day they broke the 12 game losing streak.

I know

I would just like someone to rationally defend these moves (Soria, Butler). Maybe I’m the crazy one.

September call ups

Who do you think we’ll see?

I want to see Kaaihue, Pena, Dusty Hughes, and Devon Lowery get some PT. Not sure how to make room, DFA Fulchino, Grudz to 60-day, DFA Angel Sanchez? I wonder if they’ll give Lumsden a look as a reliever too?

by schlongky on Aug 16, 2008 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think they'd have to DFA Sanchez

because he’s on the DL right now. So if he’s still on the DL come September, they can send people up and keep him, right?

I found the Hillman article

http://newsok.com/even-as-losses-mount-royals-manager-hillman-is-upbeat/article/3254070/?mp=1

Summer of 2002, and Trey Hillman is the director of player development for the Rangers, in Savannah, Ga., to visit the organization’s Class A affiliate.

The carpet in this place isn’t fit for a prison.

Oh my gosh, Hillman remembers thinking, this can’t be.

He asks around, nobody seems to share his outrage, and so the next day, he takes his credit card to Home Depot and buys carpet, tools, the whole bit. When the players get to the ballpark, they can’t believe it — their boss’ boss, on his hands and knees, installing new carpet for their clubhouse.

It’s the only way Hillman has ever known to confront a challenge: head on, sleeves rolled up, minding the most minor detail.

"That’s who I am," Hillman says now. "That’s exactly who I am."

Wow
Hillman’s at the ballpark 14 hours or more a day. He hasn’t been sleeping much and thought about staying the night last week. His appetite is down, his coffee intake up, and he wakes up in the middle of the night with a twisting stomach, ready to vomit.

These are the sorts of stories you hear about NFL coaches. But a baseball manager? I’m glad he works hard, I guess, but what is there to do? Break down film.

“There! That’s the problem! We should have hit a home run instead of grounding into a double play. Are you getting all this, Dave?”
