Game 124 Open Thread - Royals at Yankees
Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees, Aug 17, 2008 1:05 PM EDT
Who is the greatest Kansas State baseball player in Major League history?
For my money, it would probably have to be Ted Power, no?

Just said Albert Pujols has the best OPS in the NL. I’m more impressed with Phillips noting it than I am with Pujols for having it.

Pretty pathetic “this game doesn’t matter” attitude by Hillman.
For all the flack Bell got for doing that, this was horrid. You’d think they’d at least have a long reliever in the bullpen since they traded Ho Ram, or maybe they could’ve brought someone up incase this happened today.

He could not continue doing what he did last year.
Last year, the stats showed that he was a FLUKE! Thusly, he has to throw STRIKES! including 0-2 pitches. He may have an ERA 3-4 points higher, but he is doing WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE! to be a good pitcher.
Banny being Banny.
by JobDDT on Aug 17, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Its strange, I've been trying to find something all game in his stats to show where everything is going wrong...
and the answer is just that EVERYTHING is going wrong. His stats are worse in almost every pitching count, giving up more hits, walks, while in critical situations(RiSP, 0-2 counts etc.) his K’s havn’t budged.
I refuse to set up a signature....DAMMIT
by RoyalPug on Aug 17, 2008 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He has publically said
He needs to throw more strikes and he cannot keep doing what he did last year (you know, when he was good). Therefore, he is biting the bullet (IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES?!?!) and is trying out new things, much to the pain of all of us.

How can you expect a pitcher to perform his job if the DEFENSE can’t do theirs? This is pitiful. I can’t wait until we finally reload our system and get rid of this crap.

Can you bring them up this early? Pimental's stuff is nasty but he really hasn't pitched that well....
by Royal2103 on Aug 17, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Only reason I said Pimental is he's already on the 40-man
I don’t think either are great bets, but I don’t want to see Bannister anymore.
by schlongky on Aug 17, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree completely...
Banny definitely needs to use that last option (or second to last… anyone? i forget) and getting Pimental in some big league action might straighten out his head. Which is a definite case…

Ok, I'm going to attempt to explain Bannister from what I see on the outside.
Bannister is the victim of his success last year. He got ahead a lot using his fastball and cutter, worked off of that, and got a lot of GBs and easy FBs. At times he was hit REAL hard and he developed this complex in his head that he has to get better at that and NOT give up so many hard hit balls.
He is a very studious guy, so that being his nature, he is overworking/overanalyzing himself trying to get better. It’s a great thing but a fault at the same time. By doing this while he was having success, he become deathly afraid of the “hard” hit baseball. Even though he had success last year, he decided that he needed to make some changes this offseason in order to have success this year.
That being the case and him being an overanalyzer, he decided that he needed to limit the hard hit baseballs. This is all a good thing. However, the attempt he made to limit them hasn’t been the best thing. By having this hidden fear in his mind of the hard hit baseball, he’s been trying to nibble corners as that is the easiest way to become a successful pitcher. This a true in part. But what he is missing this year is the getting ahead early with his fastball/cutter part.
Look around the league at pitchers who are having success. The biggest key to those guys is their ability to challenge hitters early and work from inside the zone to outside the zone. Most of those guys work thirds of the plate. Outer third, outer edge, off the plate, inner third. That is a simple pattern that could be used.
This is an easy concept to teach, but when you have an inferiority complex about hard hit baseballs, it becomes a phobia. (Someone who has a medical background needs to name it) This is now Bannister’s problem. This hardhitballphobia. (Again, someone name it) When Bannister can learn to get ahead again and ignore the little feeling inside that says first pitch fastballs get hit hard, he’ll be the Bannister we had last year. Until then, we cannot give up on him. He has the ability, movement, and enough velocity to be a successful big league pitcher. Let’s get that sports psychiotrist some work. How do we break that phobia? We need to find out now before he becomes damaged for good.

What?!?!?!?!
A pitcher working off his fastball and changing speeds?!? kinda sounds like Moose from 98 who minus a few M.P.H. reminds me a lot of Banny early.
IMO I’m not a huge fan of how Banny doesn’t attack and nibbles constantly. Look at freaking Josh Newman! Not an mlb pitcher necessarily but is throwing strikes when he needs to. Damn the defense.
If someone could find the number of times Banny was ahead in the count compared to this year that would be real interesting
by Royal2103 on Aug 17, 2008 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bannister has had some issues with 0-2 counts
If anything, I think he is throwing too many strikes, not nibbling on the corners. He is just getting rocked over and over and over again.

When you're 0-2 you're supposed to have a completely different mindset from any other count besides possibly 3-2...
At 0-2 you rely on stuff to make someone chase or just outside the zone to make someone weakly ground/fly out. Maybe Banny isn’t doing either?
