Recap (what I remember)
- Kip Wells was someone they had interest in over the offseason. Had some success in the pen, which is where they’ll use him
-Feels like they got 3 first round talents, also mentioned Hinges (sp?) a HS SP from Mn and the 28th round pick from IL as picks they really like
-Encouraged with Hochevar
-Banny hit a wal, thinks he may overanalyze things at times
-Davies issue is fastball command, needs to learn to pitch backwards
-Will look at SP and power this offseason
-Will evaluate Greinke in the offseason. Soria approached them during the season, otherwise he never approaches palyers during the season. Sounded to me like he wants to get him signed this offseason.
-Aviles would be starting SS if season started tomorrow. Feels like teams have to develop middle infielders, especially SS due to the way teams value them. Went on to say Aviles has beat out Pena as the SS, but said team would have lost 100 games w/o Pena last year, had hoped he would hit .220-.230 but was much better last year. Thinks he’s a better player than he’s shown this year.
-Several in the organization told Dayton to protect Aviles, but he felt they wouldn’t lose him, and they got lucky.
-Will discuss Soria to the rotation, but he’s not inclined to move him. Doesn’t think he would be as dominant as a starter. Mentioned his delivery and worried about his long term health. Has a chance to be very special in his current role. If Soria came to him he would consider it but Joakim loves what he’s doing.
-Said he would sign Jose Guillen if he was on the market this offseason again. Thinks he’s very managable and speaks with him daily when he’s in town. Knew there would be issues with him “based on everyone he’s talked to in the game” In a funk now because he goes into a depressive state when the team is losing. Very sensative, bothers him when he gets booed, plays hard, runs balls out (???) Does bother him and he just wants to win.
-Billy Butler litle more advanced offensively than Alex. Alex a little more consistent, frustrating at times. They both work hard everyday and want to be great. Thinks one day they will blossom. Believes they’ll be great players.
That’s all I got.

Great stuff, thanks a lot.
I feel like I heard the interview myself…
As far as what GMDM said, I agree with most of it. Not moving Soria to the rotation isn’t good, but hopefully he can lock up Zach/k this offseason, which would make up for Soria staying as a closer.

Cliff Notes for those unable to listen...
Greinke will be considered for a long term deal. GMDM wont approach players mid season, but if they approach him, he’ll talk.
Aviles is right now the starting SS next spring. Doesn’t see a FA alternative, though they haven’t exploreed to possibility fully. Aviles needs to be more patient @ the plate at times. Aviles wants to go to winter ball, and approached GMDM about said. Tony pena is OUT, “Aviles has clearly won that position” “Tony is a lot better play than hes shown this year, and we’ve given him every opportunity this year.”
The surprising success of Aviles @ MLB has energized the entire MiLB oranization, showing players that they may not be as far away as they seem. 3 organizational guys told GMDM to protect Aviles last offseason, he didn’t agree, and GMDM conceeded that he got lucky by not losing him.
Soria discussions from C to SP will occur. GMDM is “Not inclined” to move him b/c he is very talented, very gifted in the role he is in. He doesn’t like the lower half of his delivery in a 100+ pitch, every 5th day role. “He’s got a chance to be very special in this role.” If Joakim came to GMDM to him saying that he really wanted to start, they’d liten, but Soria is very happy doing what he’s doing.
If he had to do it all over again, GMDM would sign Jose Guillen again. (seriously what, is he supposed to say? No? What an ignorant question by Kietzman). GMDM says he is very manageable, and Keitzman follows up with, “So you thought it would be this bad?” GMDM says that Jose s in a funk right now b/c the team is losing and he gets depressed, it crushes him when the team loses. Keitzman is a real jackass sometimes.
Alex & Billy are developing fine. Billy is more advanced thatn AG offensively, both are imprving, Alex is more consistent this year over last, both are working hard daily. And both want to be great & work very hard. The term “unrealistic expectations” was used oftem

Wow loved that interview
I was impressed with everything he said. You gotta give it to Kietzman he asked pretty much every question on every fans brain.

I disagree about Kietzman
Keitzman can do a good interview, but the overwhelming vibe I got from this interview was his skewing things his way, especially in the after-analysis of it.
He & Cliknsdale both went on a 10 minute diatribe afterwards about the #1 thing that they took away from it was that Jose Guillen AND Zach Greinke were the TWO Problem children in the organization. I didn’t pick up ANY signals of resentment toward ZG from GMDM in the interview personally, and any resentment towards Jose was drawn out merely by the manner in which the questions about him were asked. They basically analyzed the answers that GMDM gave RE: Jose Guillen and said, “Well, of course he just lied to us, we’ve been saying for months the guy is a loser, and we need to get rid of him, thats what GMDM wanted to say, he just couldn’t.”
KK has beaten the Jose Guillen situation into the ground, constantly saying things like, “(GMDM) Couldn’t have know it would be THIS BAD with him.” “This Bad?” What has the guy done that has been “That Bad”? Yea, he’s a headcase, yea, he quite possibly fought the pitching coach (lol, ok that is bad), yea, he told the fans he didn’t care about them (one of the most out of context quotes taken from SEVERAL athletes over time). It’s not like he’s out getting DUI’s & endangering the public, or anything. Oh, wait, we had a player doing that & KK hasn’t said anything about it. I guess a guy making close to the league minimum isn’t an easy enough target for KK.
Anyway, sorry about the Jose tangent…
KK didn’t bring up the fact that Ross load has played 1st nearly every game since Butler has been back with the club. That is inexcusable as an interviewer in my opinion.
KK didn’t bring up the Omaha Royals current situation. I’m not sure that GMDM knows anything about it or not, but it is a topic that isn’t getting a lot of play on the airwaves, and KC fans should know about it.
The phrasing of the questions about Jose Guillen are inexcusable as well, in my opinion.
I would have liked some questions RE: the lack of development by some “cornerstone” type offensive pieces like Teahen, Buck, and to some extent AG. Some pointed questions aimed at seeing if GMDM thinks it stems from the way the Allard organization was ran & structured, or if more of the ‘blame’ rests with the current coaching staff…

wow
He called Zack Greinke a problem child.
That’s pathetic. Guess we should trade him for a light hitting middle infielder!!!
I knew KK was pathetic…but that’s just bordering on…well you get it.
Zack Greinke, our BEST starting pitcher, perhaps the best in years, is not the problem. At all.

I don’t think we should ever forgive him for that.

I listened to the post interview rant as well.
I think his comments on Greinke are valid, we as fans don’t know his mental situation. That is all KK and Clinksdale said they said we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes like the FO does. We don’t know Zacks committment to baseball longterm. He didn’t say it like he was a problem as much as he said he is a quandry to the organization about what to do with him longterm.
As for the Guillen thing I think you are on about that. KK has been on Guillen for quite sometime I think he needs to resign to the fact that it is more likely than not that Jose will be here next year. In reality what has Jose really done to deserve to get booted off this team. Is everyone in that dugout so thin skinned to realize guys get frustrated and blow up every now and then. This isn’t the politically correct desk job world this is baseball.
As far as the Omaha thing I don’t really think that is in GMDM hands that much as it is Alan Stein’s and Glass. If you expect GMDM to throw Baird under the bus you are gonna be disappointed. GM’s know joblife is short and while one day you are the GM the next day you might be that guys assistant being politically correct is a better answer for them. Also any slant on Baird is also a direct slam to his boss David Glass who didn’t exactly give Baird the same tools to work with as GMDM has currently. The other stuff you mentioned are behind the scene questions that even if KK had asked them probably wouldn’t have been given much of a informative answer from GMDM.

I wasn't
looking for GMDM throw Baird under the bus. But even if it was a bull shit answer, it would have been nice to talk about how the organization has changed its hitting philosophy over the last 2 years, and those results wont start to be seen at the MLB level for a couple years, or something like that, ya know?

What a great interview
I hope 810 posts this on their website, as they sometimes do. I wish every RR member could hear this. GMDM gives it so straight and I love that about him.
Oh yeah, he also mentioned that he likes Aviles’s aggressiveness on the field but thinks he could use a lot more patience at the plate and came to the front office about playing winter ball to improve it. Firstly, great to see Aviles trying to work to keep getting better, secondly: there is an example that DM does value patient hitting. I say this over and over, but just because players do something on this team doesn’t mean that it is the philosiphy of the FO/ Manager.

I have a feeling Dayton Moore was giving the PR schpiel with regard to Guillen
I really doubt he’s in love with the Guillen signing and I think he might be looking to trade him in the offseason. But, regardless, he has to say positive things about him. Him being open and honest would only hurt the Royals.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Thanks to all who gave notes for we who didn't hear it
I actually disagree with those who think Dayton “gave it straight.” However, it think that’s a good thing. Yeah, defending his moves and players might protect his ego, but, more importantly, nothign is served by ripping players or putting them down. He doesn’ t need to tell us that Tony Pena, Jr., sucks (well, almost all of us) - we all know it. Nice to see that he admits he got lucky with Aviles. Still think the comment that he oped TPJ would hit "220.230" this year doesn’t quite say what one would want to hear with regard to how to evaluate players, but it’s over now, whatever.
People may have noticed I’m not the biggest Jose Guillen fan at the moment, but I agree with NYRoyal — what’s he going to do, go Ricciardi on him? Besides, the poor kid is depressed enough as it is.
I still hope Soria can be a starter, but I’m glad to hear that the reasons that DMGM would hesitate are grounded in his pitching style, delivery, etc., and not in the closer myth.
I’m curious as to how exacty Butler is more advanced than Gordon. More contact? Better BA? Seems to me Gordon has better paitence, takes more walks, has better isolated power. Butler rakes lefties (and Gordon, um, doesn’t yet), but has been pretty terrible against RHPs so far this year.
The “not approaching players during the season” thiing also makes sense — at least there’s an explanation for those worried about Greinke.
Thanks again for the notes, everyone.

TPJ
maybe he just thought TPJ was a short term stopgap until he could find/develop something better.
I agree on the Guillen remarks he can’t rip him that would serve no purpose especially if he is going to try to trade him.
As for Butler he is more advanced if you consider age and where they stood at the same point in their career.

"giving it straight'
is more about answering the questions and not saying the usual BS you usually hear in interviews.
Example, he asked about the Soria starter thing. Dayton answers that it will be discussed but he likes him where he’s at and Soria does too (short version). A lot of times, an interviewee in his position would say: “Well that’s something we’ll have to evaluate over the off-season and will have to play out as we go forward.” A lot of people in his position will play that crap close to the vest and not really answer the questions. See the difference? It’s nice to get real answers from your GM about issues concerning the team (whether you like them or not).

Actually, I don't think he got lucky
He made a judgement call on Aviles, Lubanski and Dusty Hughes that he could leave them unprotected and no one would claim them. He made the right call. And I think Lubanski and Hughes were the tougher call. There was actually a little buzz about them in the pre-Rule 5 press. No one was talking about Lubanski. Even in the fairly voluminous debates on this very site about who to protect in the Rule 5 draft, Hughes and Lubanski were mentioned a lot. I don’t remember Aviles’s name coming up even once.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Moore on Soria in the rotation
I still hope Soria can be a starter, but I’m glad to hear that the reasons that DMGM would hesitate are grounded in his pitching style, delivery, etc., and not in the closer myth.
I agree. There is only one potentially good reason to keep him in the bullpen, and that is delivery/injury risk. I’m not an expert on pitching mechanics (and the “experts” on mechanics very often disagree with each other), but I can understand how that would be an issue. But it was interesting that he didn’t say “we’re not going to move him to the rotation because we think it would be too much of an injury risk due to his particular mechanics.” Maybe that means that they are going to work on his lower body mechanics and see if he can effectively make whatever change he needs to make in Moore’s eyes. I still think there is a chance for him to move into the rotation at some point next year, particularly if the Royals don’t land a big SP FA. (fingers crossed)
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'm not opposed to the move by any means
but after hearing Dayton’s comments, I’m fine with him staying as a closer. He really has found an amazing niche as a closer and could be a very special player (think K-Rod, Rivera, Hoffman, Nathan). Does he have a long way to go before we can compare him to those guys? Yes of course, but the way he’s pitched this year has been simply amazing. There is no telling how good of a starter he could be, but we do know how good of a closer he is.
In these type of “should they or shouldn’t they” situations, I tend to side with the decisions that our baseball people think is best. Say what you will about our past FO decisions, but this is their job and they do have a lot more info than us.
One of the biggest factors to me now: Soria likes closing and hasn’t approached DM about starting, if he does that, I think DM will let him do it.

At the risk of starting a war

If/when the Royals finally decide against moving him to the rotation, I would DEFINITELY trade him
If we’re not going to get SP value out of him, then his talent and, more importantly, his trade value is wasted as the Royals closer. Elite closers are valued so highly that a young, cheap one is worth a ton. We could get a young, cheap power hitting corner OFer for him, plus a good prospect. We could get a huge haul would which potentially fill multiple holes. I love Soria. I think he’s spectacular. And I would trade him in a second.
If the Royals haven’t moved Soria to the rotation by the ASB, and if at that time they aren’t talking about doing it in the near future, I’m going to be screaming for a trade. Everybody talks about finding inefficiencies in the market and taking advantage of them. This one has been out there for a long time and it is a massive one. Trading Soria would make the Royals a lot better overnight.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
