I don't understand
our reluctance to use the DL this year. Both Guillen and Mahay are obviously hurt and it seems to me like they could use the time on the DL to recover. Now since Mahay has been hurt, I believe he has been used twice with less than spectacular results. We keep putting Guillen into the lineup virtually everyday, either in the field or as the DH. He hasn't been doing a damn thing lately other than grounding into double plays. Why are these 2 not on the DL? I know this would mean a return to Gator in the field and another crappy arm in the pen, but wouldn't those alternatives be better than a half ass Guillen and a virtually unuseable Mahay?

Is a healthy Gator better than an injured Guillen?
I don’t think so. And Mahay isn’t on the DL because they think he’ll be back w/in 15 days. If they think it will be a shorter injury, then they don’t need to DL him for two weeks.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Guillen
is being run out there in hopes he can pad his stats in hopes some other team would make a trade for him in the offseason. Obviously that is the hope with Mahay, in the mean time are starters get shelled which makes us have to go to the pen more often with fewer options.

I don't think more Gator is the answer to any question
…with the possible exception of “which professional baseball player would make the best track athlete?”
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The silver lining with Gator's injury is that Maier has gotten a look
I believe that Maier is a better BASEBALL player than Gator even though he isn’t the fastest runner in the AL or can’t jump a car. For all of Gathright’s speed, the constant view on this blog is he isn’t that awesome of a fielder or a base stealer. Gathright is one player that KC should look to shop in the offseason (not that he’ll fetch much) but KC has an adequate replacement in Maier and more speedy OF types in the minor on the way.

Maier
Maier is definitely a better player than Gathright. I don’t think you’ll get any argument on that.
I don't fight extra players.

what gave it away?
was it Maier’s ability to hit the ball out of the infield?
that said, Gathright has made improvements, and i think he deserves a shot at continuing to improve into an above-average player (although not while on the ML roster).

what do you mean "stretches like that?"
If you are trying to say that Gathright gets XB hits more the Maier, THAT is a stretch. He has 3 XBH out of 62 hits
We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.

Gathright will be extremely lucky
to be an average major league outfielder. If he’s merely fortunate, he’d be worthy of being a 4th outfielder.
OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

Gator and Gathright
I think Gator has pretty much proven himself to be crappy, so it is good to try out Maier and see if he’ll be better. I hope he will be, but that is far from certain. Gathright is a career .262/.326/.304 hitter. Maier could easily end up being a .260/.300/.325 hitter. And Gathright has become a genuinely good defensively OFer and good base stealer. Before this year, he usually got bad reads, but his speed helped to make up for that, making him a slightly above average defensive OFer by advanced defensive metrics. This year he’s making considerably better reads and that along with his speed makes for great range. And his base stealing has improved greatly (perhaps due to help from Kuntz). He talked early in the season about being able to read pitchers better and that has paid off with a SB% of 85%.
I’m not saying Gathright is better than Maier. And I definitely want Gathright off the team. He’s tradeable for something and there’s no reason to waste a penny over the minimum on him, and he’s arb. eligible. But my point is that while Maier is definitely a roughly comparable player and able replacement for Gathright, we really can’t be certain that Maier will be better than Gathright proved himself to be (or perhaps even as good).
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

C'mon. Gator is needed.
It’s obvious that MLB must have some secret talks that nobody in the media has heard of that are going to allow a DR next year in the AL. Now, with the DH and the DR (designated runner), they will have an ever growing edge on the NL.
