Grudzielanek to the DL?

Grudzielanek and Gload collided last night while chasing down a pop fly.  Grudz seemed to emerge with a knee injury.  Maybe he will go on the DL?  Denny Mathew’s description of how Grudzielanek acted after the collision made it sound likely.  He did not get up for a few minutes and needed help walking off the field.  No word yet from the Royals.  Here is a link to the Royals.com story and a short video of the collision.

Some thoughts:

Both Gload and Gudz knew the fans here are RR were losing patience with the amount of playing time they were getting in relation to that portioned out to the younger players.  Maybe Gload decided one of them had to go down to take the pressure off the other and took matters into his own hands.  Is Gload more Machiavellian than we expected?

If Grudz is down for a while, does that mean Callaspo will be judged sober enough to return to big league duty?  I hope so.

As long as Gload is willing to do the fan's dirty work and play the role of "Royals Review Fan Ire Enforcer" I hope he sets his sights on Tony Pena Jr. next.   I say we here at Royals Review send Gload a pink slip each week containing the name of his next victim:

Week 1 - Grudzielanek

Week 2 - Pena

Week 3 - German

Week 4 - Mirror

Let's not get our hopes up...

all this means is that Aviles will slide over to 3rd and TPJ is once again our everyday SS.

I hereby resign from this post.

exactly

(assuming you meant Aviles to 2nd)

I can’t believe Grudz didn’t break his leg. His foot was flopping like a dead piece of meat when he was rolling after impact.

I’d play Este at 2B and keep Aviles where he is….

Grudz

Grudz appeared to suffer an eversion ankle sprain… just means the ankle goes the other way than the normal ankle roll. This type of injury is usually 2-3 weeks depending on the severity. I’d say we DL him. That’ll keep his batting average high for a while while he heals. Then maybe he’ll keep that type B status.

grit

Maybe he’ll just rub some dirt on it and be in the starting line-up this afternoon.

Is anyone calling from Grudz to be DFA'd?

He’s actually been one of the Royals better players this season. The only people who wanted him gone wanted him traded. He shouldn’t be back (unless he’s the only option at FIRST other than Gload), but he’s been OK.

I know you’re just joking around, of course. But that sucks—now there can’t even be a waiver trade for him, most likely.

It would really, really suck if this is how his career ended.

I agree with German at 2nd/Aviles at SS, by the way.

Of course I don't want to see Grudz DFAed.

I like the grinders. And Grudz is one of my favorite players. I wouldn’t even mind him coming back next year.

But I also am ready to see some new younger faces in the lineup during these last 52 games. If Grudz goes on the DL it might shake up the roster a bit. I’d rather see Shealy, German and Callaspo get the at bats down the stretch than Grudz.

Unless we're talking about Callaspo coming off the DL, then losing Grudz wouldn't help the team at all

The only young player that Grudz has taken playing time from is Callaspo. And while Callie he’s not on the 25-man roster, Grudz isn’t blocking anyone. German isn’t a young player who needs developing. He hasn’t been young for a while now. Shealy isn’t young either, but I’d like for him to get another shot. Of course Grudz going on the DL doesn’t do anything to open up playing time for Shealy.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

But is Callaspo really that good where we can classify that Grudz is taking time from him? I don’t know…

He should be

I imagine DMGM thinks he has the potential to start, otherwise the trade wouldn’t have made much sense.

He probably is. But like all young, inexperienced players, we really don't know yet.

But - when healthy/ready - Callaspo should be getting the playing time because he is (or at least has a good shot at being) a part of the Royals future, while Grudz does not and should not.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Grudz going on the DL opened up a roster spot.

That spot could have been given to a younger player which the Royals might want to take a look at in big league action. Someone like Shealy, Costa, Kia or Callaspo. I hate they instead called up Jason Smith.

You do not necessarily have to replace Grudz with another everyday second baseman.

A roster spot is not the issue. Playing time is the issue.

Yes, you could call up Shealy, but that would just give him a roster spot and a spot on the bench. Grudz going on the DL opens up no playing time opportunity for Shealy.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

If Grudz goes on the DL, and Callaspo is not considered ready to return to action...

Jason Smith????

That would be such a Buddy Bell move.

I just got back from helping a friend move,

and found my most cynical prediction had in fact become reality.

OK, what is up with Callaspo? Is he coming back this year?

No way!

I mean, I hardly know the guy! No way would I help him move yet! Not even if he took me out for beer and pizza afterward.

According to RoyalsCorner poster,

jason smith was recalled, and a corresponding 40 man roster move had to be made.. since jason isn’t on the 40 man.

Jason Smith was called up

and Yabuta put on waivers.

Why would we waste our time with Jason Smith? SHEALY NOW!!!!!111111111111112222222

Smith offers alot more flexibility

He can play pretty much 2/3 Of positions and all infield spots.

If Shealy comes up, it won't be because a middle IFer goes on the DL.

Unless you want to teach Shealy a new position in the majors.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

But now we've got more pop off the bench

If the existence of Smith on the 25-man roster makes it less likely that Hillman will give too many starts to Pena. With Grudz gone, I could easily see Hillman going with Pena at SS and Aviles at 2B. I think having Smith on the roster makes that somewhat less likely.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It could have been Shealy,

seeing as how Gload moved to the OF today, that opened up a spot at 1B; however, with Guillen hobbled, he needs to DH and Butler play 1B.

Sorta weird that it took an injury to Grud to get Butler some experience at 1B, in a round about way.

Personally, I’m willing to go with Aviles and German as the 2nd basemen for now – but I’ll bet Trey goes with a platoon of Smith and German at 2B instead.
